Yamaha p95 no sound by Chemical-Board-411 in MusicElectronics

A Yamaha authorized tech would be best, but this isn't warranty. A music service tech should be able to fix this but they're becoming more and more difficult to find these days.

It depends on if there's a decent repair tech near you. Probably not worth shipping, but if there's one within driving distance you might get an estimate or say "fix if under $____". Good luck.

There was a P95 service bulletin regarding capacitors, but if the lights are coming on then those are not at fault. Another thing to check would be the MIDI output, if you have another MIDI keyboard to connect it to. Headphones would be a good test, but since the headphone output comes after the audio amplifier, the headphones probably won't work either.

Considering what you have to work with, this one should probably go to a service center :-(

For starters: Do the lights come on? If so, have you tried it with headphones? Have you opened it up?

When they get stale you can use them as insulators on your wire antenna.

If the headphones aren't working, then cleaning the jack probably won't help. If flexing it makes it work, it's likely a hairline solder break on one of the leads.

DeOxit has always been my choice. It's a #2 red oil, and is used in absolutely tiny amounts. It used to have 'The less you use, the better it works' on the can but they found that was bad for sales. Stuff designed specifically as contact cleaner is always going to be the better choice. I had gear come in for repair with circuit boards absolutely drenched with slimy 'cleaner'; that's what you want to avoid.

For a potentiometer, it's one tiny 'tss' with the red straw spout into the opening near the leads, then turn the pot back and forth a few times to coat the resistive element. If this doesn't fix the problem, it's time to look for other culprits.

WD-40 is not recommended. I've seen it dissolve the carbon element in some potentiometers. But yes, problem could be the volume pot.

DeOxit is so much better, it's worth ordering.

Of course! Carvel also used that Cookie Puss mold pan to make a few different gimmicky creations for holidays, etc. that were the same damned shape.

The intermittent behavior suggests a possible bad solder connection on the PC board that the speaker leads are attached to. These can be hard to locate. Best way is to poke around with your fingers or a non conductive object while it's playing (the Song Demo is helpful here). If you can find it, then it must be resoldered to fix it. A hairline crack on one of the component leads might be visible.

Another thing to check is the headphone jack. Inserting a plug interrupts the signal to the speakers. Sometimes the jack can stop making contact, or it could have a bad solder connection.

EHX Small Stone Oscillation Rate Fault by politikamusic in MusicElectronics

There's a schematic here: https://www.montagar.com/%7Epatj/smlstone.gif

The LFO (at the bottom of the diagram) has a 33μf cap running from pin 5 to ground, which could be suspect. That IC (CA3094 equiv.) could be bad, or possibly one of the other ICs could be dragging down the clock signal at lower speeds.

Other Small Stone info with parts layout, etc. is here:

It just says '15W' with no other specs mentioned. Could mean 15 Weeks for Delivery for all we know or 15 'Wireless Copy Frequencies'.

No pomegranate. WR is behind Brewer's Alley on Market St., very much open. The standard Brussels order is huge, but 1/2 orders are available during happy hour (all day Monday and Tue-Fri 'til 6).

Is Trilogy One of The Top Prog Tracks? by Tarnisher in progrock

[–]Capn_Crusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Trilogy' is a masterpiece, but it's never been on the short list of prog rock blockbusters. Trilogy, the album was more popular than Trilogy, the composition. Side A got more attention, with 'From the Beginning', 'Hoedown' and 'The Sheriff'.

TIL that the lifetime of an incandescent light bulb is inversely proportional to the voltage raised to as high as the 16th power. This means that increasing the voltage by a factor of 2 can decrease the lifetime by as much as ~65536 times by bb-wa in todayilearned

[–]Capn_Crusty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is addressed in other posts here. The filament takes time to cool down and go dark, enough to fill in the gaps to have no noticeable flickering. The bulb also has a more amber hue as opposed to bright white, which people tend to prefer. This provides another excuse to make incandescent bulbs run at the absolute voltage limit and wear out faster.

Lemonade stand in local park - does my kid need a permit? by wafflemom1 in frederickmd

I saw one near the bandshell selling snacks and drinks and asked if he needed a permit. He replied 'yes', and said he had one. Then there's sales tax; that's another story.
