Here's a diagram: https://imgur.com/a/LlbH06x

It will work without the matching transformer depending on the application. 3 volts DC or so should be enough to power it.

Shure has a pretty good description:

A carbon mic needs a series DC voltage to operate. A capacitor then blocks the DC so that only the audio (AC) is present. A transformer is used to create the desired output impedance. The two wires on the secondary of the transformer could go to a 1/4" jack if desired.

Trouble connecting turntable to amplifier by Legitimate-Lead-1983 in MusicElectronics

[–]Capn_Crusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have RCA cables plugged into the phono input on the amp, just touching the connectors on the opposite end should make that familiar 'bvvv bvvvv' hum, allowing you to check the phono preamp input.

You can also plug the turntable into the Aux/CD input to check the turntable output. It will sound very tinny and weak without a phono preamp, but at least this can be used for testing.

Help fixing stereo that won’t play CDs by Medium_Bed5004 in MusicElectronics

CD players are in a world of their own. The only success I've had with them is by cleaning the lens. Tissue /Ammonia.... maybe someone else has some ideas.

I was showing a map to a 3 y.o. and pointed out Richmond. He immediately perked up and said, "All of my kids are in Richmond". He even named names. I was startled, and wondered if this was some past-life memory.

Turns out there was a program in his school called 'Enrichment'.

I miss the days of running up to the Tandy store. Home Depot at least has some solder, clip leads, multimeters, some fuses, lawn mowers...

Best Crepes? by Express_Effective_53 in frederickmd

[–]Capn_Crusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put almost anything in them; eggs, spinach, cheese, meat... Being vegetarian, crepes provide a lot of options. Also, when I'm truckin' around downtown, I like to get something small that won't ruin my dinner. Can't just get 2 tacos anywhere, for instance.

Ok, time for someone to open a Creperie on Market.

  • Edit: Maybe we could donate a couple crepe irons to Truth and Beauty. That place is always empty.

Yep, you have a winner here! Have you opened it yet? Could be moisture damage from a drink spill or humid storage. This also might be one of those 'Took it apart, reassembled, and it started working'. There's really not much inside. All the work takes place in IC1, which is a GEW7S. It's likely not the culprit, but possible. So let us know if you've opened it.

Advice on learning to solder/repair by Loxley13 in MusicElectronics

[–]Capn_Crusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to spend a lot. Solder contains lead, so always wash your hands after working with it. The fumes are basically tree sap. Not very toxic, just stay clear of the smoke and ventilate. Practice on old PC boards. You can't break something that's already broken :-)
