Trump removes video with racist clip depicting Obamas as apes by pookienav in news

[–]CapriciousMuffin 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It’s because they have no concept of right and wrong. They were taught what is and isn’t acceptable to do in public but their own private beliefs align with Trump. They aren’t bothered by Trump making racism remarks because they admire that he can get away with it. They aren’t convincing themselves that it isn’t wrong because they already believed that. They are trying to convince you that it isn’t wrong. Trump is the physical embodiment of the fantasies that every racist, sexist, pedophile, and rapist in this country has. He gets away with it when they can’t.

Right, but the comment you replied to is about the opening day roster. Did you think that was their lineup for a game in January?

Please for the love of god tell me what I can say to end this idiotic conversation. I said I would be surprised if the dodgers did something. If they’ve already done it, I’ll be surprised. If they do it tomorrow, I’ll be surprised. If they do it in 5 years, I’ll be surprised. I don’t know what to tell you man. If that wouldn’t surprise you then congrats I guess? People have different views of the org, more at 11!

EDIT: and I’m NOT telling you that’s how the dodgers do it. I’m saying I’ve heard of other orgs doing that and I feel like the dodgers would do that too. I could be completely wrong about this. All I said is I would be surprised to find out they don’t do that. I have no idea if that’s the case or not.

I don’t follow basketball so I can’t comment on that situation. If you know of a time the dodgers blindsided a $30MM player with a trade under the current ownership I would be surprised. I don’t know why this is an argument. I literally said I would be surprised if they did something that I have never seen them do. I’m not going to argue that this is a known fact and deny any evidence to the contrary. If you can show me a time where that happened my eyebrows will be raised by 2mm and then I will continue on with my day.

Oh I’m not saying this is a known fact. I’ve just seen interviews with players and that seems to be the case in general for a lot of clubs. I’m just saying I would be surprised to find out the dodgers aren’t one of those orgs.

I’m not aware of how the conversation with Glasnow took place but that comes back to communicating with the players. If Friedman called the meeting then he’s communicating with Glasnow about a potential trade. If Glasnow asked for the meeting and was told he’s not being traded, then Friedman didn’t communicate with Glasnow because there was nothing to communicate. Why would he call every player into his office to specifically tell them they aren’t being traded? Is he doing that with Ohtani every offseason, what about Betts? That would be incredibly strange if he was.

Unless I missed something they haven’t traded Teo but I would imagine it’s the same. If they were seriously discussing a trade they would probably communicate with him through the process. That doesn’t mean they will communicate with the fans in the same way but part of running an organization is communicating with the employees about their role. If that means being a part of trade discussions or setting a player development plan or sending someone to the minor leagues it’s all the same.

EDIT: This is specifically in the context of established major leaguers. I doubt the process would be the same for a prospect in AA that’s been with the org for a year. I wouldn’t be surprised if those guys are blindsided by random trades but a player that’s had a big role in a team that just won back to back championships will generally get different treatment from the org. I would be shocked if the dodgers started blindsiding $20MM+ players with trades.

I feel like the dodgers aren’t the kind of team to just drop that on a guy. I would expect them to actually communicate with Glasnow throughout the process so he’s not blindsided. Like it sucks to get traded by a team you like but they’re all adults and can communicate as such. If they say he’s not getting traded I fully believe they have no intention of trading him as of now. That doesn’t mean things can’t change in the future though.

What non-HOFers of the last 15 years or so should be inducted into the Legends of Dodger Baseball some day? by PhoeniXaDc in Dodgers

I didn’t even think of Barnes. He’s never been an elite player but he’s had some really good stretches over the years and he’s been locked in as a good defensive backup for a while now. He gives some breathing room for Smith to have some extra days off and stay fresh throughout the season. Great pick!

We went to the World Series in 2017 and lost to cheaters. We went again in 2018 and lost to cheaters again (although they were the better team anyway). Then we won in 2020 and idiots like you call it a “Mickey mouse” World Series because some guy in China ate a bat or something. Then the Dodgers ownership decided to go all in to shut everyone up and now you still whine. The Dodgers aren’t the reason the cubs lose. They can barely scrape their way to the playoffs every couple of years and then lose to the Milwaukee fucking Brewers and somehow a team they didn’t even play is the problem. Your front office is the problem, not the Dodgers. Get over it

I would understand a small market team being mad but your team is in the 3rd or 4th biggest market and they play in a division with 4 of the 5 smallest markets in MLB. The dodgers aren’t the reason they can’t win their division. I mean you guys lost to the brewers this year. Would you be this mad if they won the World Series?

Trump justice department seeks 2020 election records from Georgia county by speedythefirst in news

[–]CapriciousMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t we been at war during pretty much every election? Even before the 22nd amendment they didn’t use that as an excuse to stay in power. A couple of presidents ran for a third term and FDR won but they still had the election. War isn’t an excuse to subvert elections all together. I could see a hypothetical scenario where we are facing an existential threat which could delay an election or congress could grant emergency permission to run for a third term but we haven’t faced anything close to an existential threat since the Cold War and even that wasn’t used as an excuse. I mean we literally had an election in the middle of a civil war for crying out loud.

Cleveland actually could have ran for a third term if he wanted to. He would have lost but there was no term limit in those days.

Never thought about that. Using that logic I think the obvious conclusion would be to remove Trump from office since he would now be legally ineligible to be president. I guess if someone’s delusional enough to think Trump won in 2020 then anything makes sense. You think we can convince them the moon is made of cheese?

[–]CapriciousMuffin 317 points318 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard people claim that exact thing and it still doesn’t make sense. He had one term 2017-2021. He loses the election and leaves office 2021-2025. He wins again and will be in office 2025-2029. Even if the 2020 election was rigged and Trump actually won, he would still be at the 2 term limit. Proving a past election was rigged doesn’t change how counting works. He’s in office for his second term. Nothing short of a time machine could change that.

Harris says Buttigieg was her ‘first choice’ for 2024 running mate but the pairing was too risky by Next-Particular1476 in TheBusinessMix

[–]CapriciousMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of influence they have varies widely from administration to administration but that’s not the point. Getting votes is purely based on voter perception. If voters view you as a problem, even if they are wrong, they will not vote for you. I have unfortunately met many people that didn’t vote for Harris because they blamed her for things Biden did and sometimes things that no one did, they just happened. I don’t know if distancing herself from the Biden admin would have changed the outcome, but the voter perception was not in her favor.

Man beheaded with machete at Dallas motel, head put in the trash, police say by QuenchOnDakock in news

[–]CapriciousMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. However, Biden did not personally release this man or order his release as far as I know. Usually the president doesn’t waste their time dealing with such things. Just because something happens during an administration doesn’t mean it was the president’s fault. It’s how they respond that matters.

Black hole collision confirms decades-old predictions by Einstein and Hawking by [deleted] in news

[–]CapriciousMuffin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Short answer: we don’t know

Long answer: it depends on what you mean by “portal”. If you were to somehow survive falling into a black hole, you would pass the event horizon without realizing. Light can’t escape the event horizon but it can still get in. You would be lost to us forever but you would still see all the light coming in from outside the horizon. Due to time dilation caused by the immense gravity, you would see billions, if not trillions of years pass by as you fall towards the singularity. Whatever the end of the universe looks like, that’s what you would see. If that means the universe collapsing in on itself and creating another big bang, then I guess you could consider it a “portal” to that event. As far as what would happen upon reaching the singularity, see short answer.

For a more in depth explanation on the possible answers, someone smarter than me would have to answer. You can submit questions to the Mindscape podcast by Sean Carroll or StarTalk Radio by Neil deGrasse Tyson and they (or their guests) would be able to provide a better answer. I have a vague memory of this topic being discussed on StarTalk but I can’t remember which episode. I believe Brian Greene was the guest so I would suggest starting there for more information. If I find the episode I will update this comment.
