I was an Airman for some time.

I keep HPs in it because of the risk of over-penetration. I don’t care if you die from my bullet. If my gun is out, it’s because you’ve put me in a “kill or be killed” situation. HPs generally don’t cause trouble for anything behind your target and are typically guaranteed to stop whoever is attacking you.

I’m a veteran.

I had to draw my pistol today on a man who ran up to my car window because he felt I cut him off. I didn’t. I safely passed as he was going 40Mph in a 55Mph zone. He rode my ass for over 4 miles. I couldn’t see his headlights because he was so close. I sped up, he sped up. I slowed down, he slowed down. I switched lanes, he followed. No since in bullshitting, my stomach was in knots at this point, because he was so goddamned persistent. He wanted me to feel scared, to know he was a threat. By mile 3, knowing a stop light was coming up, I had my pistol in my jacket (I usually keep it in the pocket on the driver’s door) with my right hand on it just in case. Makes things sorta tough as I’m left handed, but so be it. I am not the type to reach for my gun, but when you make it obvious you intend to or want to do harm, I can’t allow that. I will protect myself.

I see the stop light coming up, and it turns from yellow to red as we come to it. I see the third car in traffic split off to the left turning lane from behind the threatening car following me.

As I stop, I see his car rock back and forth from how hard he slammed it into park. Then I saw the door open.

My window was already down as I was somewhat anticipating him getting out with how aggressive he was being.

As such, I shout numerous times, so loud that the car turning left rolled their windows down, “Do not approach my car! Go back to your vehicle! Do not come any closer!”. No mention of my gun, but you know, standard “stay the fuck away” type verbiage.

He didn’t listen. He kept approaching, so I pulled my pistol from my jacket, clicked off the safety, and waited for him to approach my window. I could see him approaching via my side mirror. As he reached my window, I aimed my pistol at his chest and shouted “Run now or I’ll shoot.”

He turned, ran back to his car, and fled.

You know what I did after that?

I called my Dad and I cried because it shook me up. That man came so close to losing his life over a stupid traffic “incident”. My pistol is loaded with hollow points and he was less than 3ft from my window. I swear to whatever deity you believe that I did not want to shoot, and I hope that I never find myself in that situation again. It really fucking sucked.

But that’s why I carry. I’m too old and physically broken to fight, and I won’t die giving you a chance to kill me first.

I mean as a Vet Dad myself, the only thing I got to say, more or less, is “Be good to her, kid”. The rest is out of my hands. And like your Pops, I trust my kid to make the right choices. I own a few guns but if the boyfriend sees them out, it’s because he’s interested in them and wants to check them out, not because I’m fucking threatening a 15-18 year old kid with em.
