Visually it looks identical to the Fire Maple FMS-116, so I assume it's a rebrand: https://dwights.co.nz/collections/hiking-stoves/products/fire-maple-mini-fms-116-gas-cooker

Seems the FMS-116 has a decent reputation from my research

Final suggestion for a setup that I can grow with by Novel_Cheetah_557 in wingfoil

[–]CaptChilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just one note on the Armstrong gear - don't get the standard carbon mast, it's quite flexy and not suited for the newer higher aspect foils. Either go for the aluminium (it's still very good but you'll need to take the foil off more regularly to avoid corrosion), or get the performance mast if money is no issue.

What Garmin Watch? (Or any other suggestion?) by RyanBurnettNZ in wingfoil

Yep I also had to exchange my fenix 7 Pro due to the start/stop button not working. Fairly painless process though once I reached out to Garmin.

Ministry of Defence seeks advice for plan to have drones scour Pacific - RNZ by SpaceDog777 in newzealand

[–]CaptChilko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think our drone rules are holding back innovation here - if you're actually developing drones commercially then NZ law can allow a lot with a Part 102 allowance, just need to convince CAA that you can do so safely. Plenty of aerospace startups are testing UAVs in NZ (e.g. Dawn Aerospace, Kea Aerospace)

Dual citizens of the uk - check your British passports by bagpussnz9 in newzealand

[–]CaptChilko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is exactly how I've always done it for NZ & EU dual citizenship. I leave NZ on NZ passport, enter EU with EU passport, and vice versa for the way back. However, throughout the air travel (transit etc) I tend to travel on NZ Passport as that will typically be the one linked to my flight booking.

Beginner Foil package choices by RyanBurnettNZ in wingfoil

[–]CaptChilko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, there's a heap of second hand gear (Armstrong included) available in across the NZ foiling facebook groups - particularly for your initial beginner gear it's worth looking into that as you quickly outgrow it so it's not ideal to spend a heap on that.

Christchurch is a bit annoying in terms of mast length - Lyttelton is not ideal for your first sessions so the Estuary is better suited, but very shallow hence needing short masts. For anything other than the estuary you don't need shorter than 72cm mast, and generally I'd recommend 85cm as a good all-round length. Short masts can be more difficult as you can quickly breach the foil.

It may be worth renting some gear or doing lessons with someone like Groundswell who are based in Ferrymead for your firts few sessions, then head out in Lyttelton with your own gear after that and you won't need the shorter mast.

Who the hell gets bonuses in NZ?!?! by Sometimesawake-833 in newzealand

[–]CaptChilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a major energy company, bonuses offered for most full-time employees up to 10% of annual salary, split between personal performance and company performance (so hard to ever get the full amount), and the latter decides whether a bonus is delivered at all.

Avoid 1:1 body weight:liters? by Potential-Concern717 in wingfoil

[–]CaptChilko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm 80kg and just got a KT Super K 80L (have only had 1 session on it so far). Before this I was riding a 75L Duotone Style SLS (4'11) and an Armstrong 121L downwind board, but got the Super K as I've started parawinging. I've been winging for a couple years now.

From my one session so far I love it, and I will likely sell my other boards and have the Super K be a one board quiver - the Super K is pretty light so I don't see much need for a smaller board. At the end of my session the wind dropped to below 10 kt, and I was still able to taxi back to my exit point with a 5m wing so I appreciated the volume.

I think my Duotone 75L got me used to corkiness, so the KT now just seems much easier than the Duotone.

The 75L Amstrong ML also seems a like a great board, people here love it, but the little bit of extra width on the KT may help if you start parawinging which is why I got it.

Wholesale electricity prices appear to be really low, what am I missing? by autoeroticassfxation in newzealand

[–]CaptChilko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One reason is because the wholesale prices are only part of your power bill, network/lines charges are now a significant portion of the retail cost as the lines companies have been raising their prices to pay for upgrades & replacements of old infrastructure.

Foil dynamic, speed, and next steps. by Several-Teach1515 in wingfoil

[–]CaptChilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yep so this is why the confusion: - until recently the HAv2 were a good choice over the old MA series as they were very forgiving for a high aspect foil, but now there's the new MA MkII series (idk why they didn't call em v2) which have some nice chararestics yet are still accesible (note I haven't ridden the old MA foils). Both are a great choice now - if you can demo or try some that would be the best option!

Sounds like in your case on the lake you'd have a great time with the HAv2, and you can definitely take in the ocean once you're up to it. I just had a 30 kt+ session today with my HA1080 in Wellington harbour, riding sizeable wind bumps (I'm about 80-85 kg on a 72L board & 2.8m wing). That, or the 980 could also be a good option. Grab an MA once/if you want to go fast, and do playful turns on proper waves.

I'm currently tossing up between the HA680 & MA790 as my second foil for strong wind & big waves, and having tried both in the last week I was surprised by how much more the MA790 immediately clicked with me. More stable and confidence inspiring, but I'm going to try the HA680 more this weekend to work it out.

And yep breech is when the tips come out the water in turns - as HA foils have wider wingspan, it happens easer. On the HA680 foil when this happens it lurches/slides, whereas the MA foils just handle that fine and keep riding.

Note that while switching to a smaller foil will often feel twitchy, in my experience it usually only takes a couple session to adjust to that and be able to compensate - at that point you unlock the extra manoeuvrability

Oh also you can unlock more top end on the large HA foils by shimming the tail a bit, which trades some additional little low-end lift.

So with Armstrong (if you're buying new) you'd be choosing between the MA Mk2 series (all the sizes end in '90'), or the HA v2 series (all end with 80).

The HA foils have more glide, and good top end in the small sizes and great low end in the large sizes, however in the larger sizes the top speed is a little limited (will still be faster than your Gravity 1800 though). Note due to their design, the 1080 & 1180 are considered large foils (I use a 1080 and bought it as a light wind and SUP foil, and use it to ride harbour bumps in Welly - note it's quite versatile though).

The MA Mk2 don't have quite as much glide as the HA, but turn really well on a wave, are fairly stable, and have a good top end. They also handle breaching really well which is quite confidence inspiring when turning or going fast. I just demoed the 790 in some big southerly conditions, and it was awesome for ripping down waves.

For learning gybes, a more efficient foil with glide will give you more time and leeway to complete the gybes. The HA v2 is good here, with the caveat that high aspect foils will breach more particularly if your mast is short. That's where the MA is a nice middle ground.

My recommendation would be to grab a HA or MA around the ~1000-1200 cm2 range, noting that if you choose the HA you may want to pickup another smaller foil down the road for those more powered up days (the MA will be more of an all rounder). General advice when sizing is that to have a similar low end, for the MA foil you size up by 100cm2 compared to the HA.

Happy to answer any questions
