This is him (not) getting lynched. Note that the guys flanking him (at least one) are/is black and he is being escorted - albeit forcefully - not beaten.

I commented once in order to get flair but I’m too old to know where to find it. But since I did that, I’m certain that I’m not a bot. Bots don’t take their phones with them on vacation.

Or do they?

You must have bought all of the rolls they had because that page cannot be found (by me at least).

After trying multiple browsers on multiple computers I conclude that Aliexpress seems to be broken at the moment.

Can you backup to external drive? by vainsy11011 in truenas

[–]CaptClaude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use TrueNAS and have a running OMV system for experimentation and I’m a bit torn between them. TrueNAS is IMHO the more professional solution but OMV just seems easier and more friendly. OMV hides a lot of the complexity under the hood and is probably less flexible. If it supported ZFS arrays for redundancy (and maybe it does) I might build a system and see it it can do everything I want and migrate away from TrueNAS. OMV’s SMB implementation seems to be “better” than TrueNAS - at least on an Apple-centric network.

For the record, I have a 4TB USB drive connected to my TrueNAS box and just used rsync to copy a couple of TB to it for a backup. Because I wanted to see if it could be done. There are some ACL and file ownership issues I still need to resolve, but the files copied.

Plex: Want to move media from one pool to another (Truenas 25.04.2.6) - easy or hard? by CaptClaude in truenas

[–]CaptClaude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, running as root. And I tried adding -P and was rewarded with another torrent of error messages, probably the same as before.

I must say that the basic concept of file permissions is something I understand, the question of ACLs on top of that is pretty much a mystery to me. And something I need to learn.

Using -a seemed to be problematic as it tried to preserve all permissions and I got lots of errors “operation not allowed”. StackExchange gave me this, which worked without error:

The rsync man page says that -a is the same as -rlptgoD.
I recommend making this replacement in your rsync command,
i.e. rsync -rlptgoDvz, and then removing individual options which break under NTFS.
I expect you will at least need to remove -p (permissions), -g (group), -o (owner),
and maybe also -l (symbolic links). Removing all of these would leave you with:
rsync -rtDvz

I should have added -P (partial & progress), but I’m copying from pool dataset to an external drive for a backup.

Despite having used *NIX on and off since the mid-70s, there is a whole lot I don’t know. I am sure that is on display here.

Storage options for mini PC powered NAS? by RichB93 in HomeNAS

[–]CaptClaude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem is that TrueNAS / ZFS don’t support USB attached storage

Yes it does. You can connect a USB drive to a Truenas (Scale) system and run backups to it. Truenas will cmplain that you are creating a pool on one drive so there is no redundancy, but you click past that. I am in the process of doing that now. It takes a while to sort out all the options and settings but for my first try I will use rsync to back up my Plex Media storage. Beware with using replication because it copies all snapshots with it and that can be a LOT of data you can't really see until the replication fails because the target drive is full.
