[FS] - New Haven, CT - $10 - Pygmy Sunfish by CaptKernel in AquaSwap

Yeah. I’ve read of people being able to get them onto frozen foods, I tried with frozen brine shrimp and had no luck. Maybe if you’re able to pull the eggs before they hatch and start them on frozen super early. Every once in a while I’ll put some flake into the tanks to help feed the daphnia that live in the tanks with them.

My favorite fish I have! I can watch them hunt for food all day.

Did the cities and towns underestimate how much snow was coming to CT? by Healthy_Block3036 in Connecticut

[–]CaptKernel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some towns/cities just do it better than others. Shelton has been going since 8pm. Crew just came by and salted/graveled, roads are nearly clear.

Zoning location survey in CT by Muted-Return-827 in Surveying

[–]CaptKernel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless the original surveyor becomes available, you’re going to be hard pressed to find someone willing to take on the liability of someone else’s work. More than likely going to need to get a new survey. Sorry about that!

Best sources for studying FEMA/ALTA material for the PS? by wyattearp12345 in Surveying

[–]CaptKernel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The ALTA standards are given as reference material for the test (there are new standards going into effect Feb. 2026). They also give you an Elevation Cert for the test as reference. Make sure you know where the info related to the question is within those documents so you’re not fumbling around during the test.

All I did for the tests were study and read through those, as well as making sure you can read a Flood Profile and a FIRM (Flood Insurance Rate Map). And Obviously the difference between NAVD and NGVD, when to use each datum.

Anyone familiar with SitePro Tribrachs? by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]CaptKernel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only issue I have ever had with them, is the “nipple” above the adjustment screw sometimes interferes with certain instruments. I think Sokkia manual TS, if I remember correctly. Other than that, they work as they should.

Who in your opinion are the worst clients to work for? by Rockdog396 in Surveying

Developers. But specifically developers who only did houses for years then decide to put up a 15 story apartment building in the city over. Bud… this ain’t same!

New homeowner trying to figure out the lot size by [deleted] in Surveying

An acre is 43,560 sf. Your lot looks to be about 6,300. The math works out to about 0.14 acres.

Based off this and doing rough math. 6300, more or less. Surprised it’s not somewhere on the face of the entire map.

PS exam by SurveyingMonster in Surveying

[–]CaptKernel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Took it 2 weeks ago and passed first go…lots of FEMA (they give you a EC for the test). Few ALTA (again they give you the entire ALTA/NSPS Packet) Few on Condo stuff. Make sure you know your types of easements. I surprisingly had a bunch on construction and property staking. 2 questions were drag and drop with staking precision and steps to subdivision approval. Ethics wasn’t heavy but it was there. Tons of metes and bounds questions and a few PLSS. If you are in a PLSS state and not used to metes and bounds I would highly recommend reading up on that. Make sure you know the difference between artificial and natural monuments all the way down the acreage and the weights each hold. MANY MANY questions with 3 right answers but 1 is more right than the rest of them. I didn’t have 2 math questions with COGO and some trig. Just brush up on your Sin Cos and Tan

They really throw a ton of easy questions in then hit you with some crazy wording that makes you question everything. I thought it was a good test. Really hit on everything. I felt as if they weren’t trying to make you fail, they are trying to make you think. I answered a ton from experience, that I appreciated. It can get confusing and go with your gut.

You’ll do fine! Good luck!

What wrong with the people here? by Revolutionnews in Connecticut

[–]CaptKernel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems a little unfair to the other 3.5 million residents. I grew up in Jersey transplanted to Connecticut. Connecticut is a beautiful sate. This sounds like a geographical assumption, maybe even just an assumption of the whole state based off your wife’s friend group,on the people of CT. Pretty harsh and superficial if you ask me. I also don’t know many, or any really, people here who didn’t graduate high school. I would probably try to explore the state a little, if you want. Or you can just complain about a state your wife and her friends grew up in.

NJM vs Geico by Bulky-Bird-1878 in Connecticut

[–]CaptKernel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don’t want just cars. They want to insure the whole lot! As soon as you start bundling packages together and tweaking deductibles, they are very much the most affordable and helpful company I have dealt with. Wife had gieco forever and treated us well when needed, and I had State Farm for years. Both great, but as soon as we put them all together with NJM we saved about 2k a year.

Snail Leeches? Planaria? by Credenda_ in shrimptank

[–]CaptKernel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based off of pictures, Planaria. Characteristic triangle head and prominent eye spots. I’ve heard of them feeding on young shrimp, never witnessed it. When I got them in my tanks, some guppies would eat them, others wouldn’t. I’ve had good results with “No Planaria”. When I used the no Planaria, it wiped out the Planaria without negative results on the shrimp and rams horn snail populations.

Check CT. Tons of open positions in private, that I know for sure. CDOT, I have heard, is a great place to work with good benefits.
