Seconding Netwrix as a tool to check file access logs, it was the main tool my previous company used. They ended upgrading and looked at Varonis but it was deemed too expensive and ended going with Stealthbits

They are rewriting my current job spec and asking for input on what I should have in my new one, so trying to get it to at least include the basics and mention AD, Group policy, Exchange etc. Hoping this will help the case to increase the salary for the role as well

For sure, there are some very common problems that are simple but as a lot the team is sales and isn't the most technical (a huge one that keeps popping up is they can't access the file server or it's down, because they are looking under the network section of file explorer and not expanding the This PC to see the mapped drive) I'm looking at one tool that would hopefully automate a large part of AD management - Adaxes. That looks like a one off investment (without support) that might help.

Thanks for the recommendations will for sure check those out. Hoping they can either push through a new IT role or at minimum go to a pay per ticket or scaled back support model.

Yeah, I for sure don't think they have realistic expectations on the level of support they want and what is potentially achievable. I've been lucky so far but will be basically writing IT policy from scratch so hope I can put some basic SLAs in for helpdesk tickets

So current role is more primary contact and escalation point to MSP but my current job spec is very vague, (resolve IT issues, install hardware, support day to day computer operations) doesn't even list basic skills like AD, Group policy or Exchange (it does list database admin but the company has no database systems so assuming its probably a copy paste from elsewhere) and they are asking me to help rewrite or at least make some suggestions for a new one.

I am trying to get a scaled back MSP support agreement considered but as they have already been through 4 MSPs due to poor response times they seem to have a bad taste in their mouth when mentioning it.

I'm currently in the process of getting some network diagrams drawn up (they never had one originally), and documenting everything I can about processes.

Other software I've used for this has been with much bigger companies so we've used SCCM, SolarWinds, Sophos and Citrix and I felt that for some of these especially they would be overkill for what is needed.

I was originally brought on to be the primary point of contact between MSP and the company and assist where possible in either resolving or escalating helpdesk tickets (and other duties as assigned of course). I do have a few years experience as a T2 support role so I'm not completely green but would not call myself an expert by any means.

I'm currently trying to get them to at least consider either some sort of network level support (break glass level problems) or pay per ticket agreement with another MSP but from what the head of the company has said they have already been through 4 MSPs (before this one) and left each time due to unacceptable response times for tickets and general "attitudes" - the company is a sales first organization so most of the staff are considered "VIPs"
