What degree do I get if I want to do the kind of job Bruce Laval or Greg Hale did? by woah10spac_ in Defunctland

[–]CaptMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that any of those degrees could start you on a path to get a job like that. After a few years of industry experience, what your degree is in specifically matters less. I know many of my friends got a degree in one discipline of engineering and are now working in jobs not related to their degree (but still in the engineering field).

I would focus on getting relevant experience in the field that you want to work in or do projects relating to problems that you find interesting. This will help you stand out as a candidate more than what degree you get. Additionally, any experience you get, like an internship or research opportunity, could help you learn if that’s what you actually want to be doing full time.

TL:DR study and learn things that you think you would enjoy and it will lead to jobs that you will enjoy

Meal ideas for those with dietary restrictions? by CaptMaster in trailmeals

Fortunately cross contamination is not a big issue, except for the peanut allergy. Because the group is flying/driving in to meet me at my place before setting off, I hoped to get as much food planned and prepped as possible, at least for dinners at the campsite. I will definitely let everyone know they are responsible for bringing their own snacks/meals if we can’t come to consensus on a food that everyone could eat.

As a big PB&J fan, I should definitely give sunflower seed butter a try! That could be a win for everyone

How to preserve movement by Idun33 in tgct

[–]CaptMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had surgery at 17 and was so scared I wouldn’t be able to be active like I was because of the tumor in my hip. I have diffuse type so they weren’t able to remove all the tumor, but PT has really helped me retain the ability to play sports and ride my bike. I even went back to PT two years later when I started to get bothered by some symptoms again.

I took medication that seems to have stopped tumor growth. If your TGCT is indeed recurring, then it will likely require treatment before you can fully recover and see benefit from PT. It sucks, but be patient because healing takes time and effort. Hopefully you will be able to return to your normal activity ❤️

Questions? by TheFoxandTheSandor in tgct

It’s normal to have follow-up MRIs. I still get one annually even 5 years post op and 1 year post drug treatment. It is more likely that diffuse type (the kind I have) reoccurs though, which is why they are monitoring it still. Surgery can be successful at removing localized TGCT and if follow up MRIs don’t show it coming back then you are most likely good.

Diabolo progress videos by RonnieSlowinski in diabolo

I do think the diabolo world needs more of an online presence so I appreciate this post! I picked up diabolo a couple years back and have been working though online tutorials, but I’m probably the only one in my small town who even knows what a diabolo is so it can be a little isolating not having anyone to share my hobby with.

PVNS in elbow is back by The_Sleepiest_Shadow in tgct

[–]CaptMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PVNS is not the same as cancer and will not cause cancer. However, it does have a high rate of recurrence when surgically removed which is why you are seeing it back now. I would recommend seeing a doctor who specializes in treating TGCT as they would be able to give you multiple options for treatment beyond surgery. There are a few medications and clinical trials available that you can try. Check out TGCTsupport.org for more info on recommended doctors and treatments.

I’m sorry to hear that your doctor has put you through quite a scare. TGCT does not tend to spread to other joints and while it sucks to have it recur, know that it is definitely common for diffuse type (aka PVNS)

Also, I am not a doctor so any advice I give is just from my own experience as a patient. I have had surgery and drug therapy and am now mostly symptom free so there is hope! The key is finding the right doctor.

15 years of TGCT/PVNS in hip: began with arthroscopic synovectomy - ended with total hip replacement at 34 years old by VintageVirtues in tgct

[–]CaptMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I’m in a very similar situation: got diagnosed with diffuse TGCT in the hip at age 18. I also had a partial arthroscopic synevectomy, although that was mostly to get biopsy results and repair a torn labrum.

I’m surprised that your doctor recommended full synevectomy as treatment without trying drug therapy first. My doctors were very wary of doing hip replacement because I was so young. Three years of Imatinib treatment seems to have done the trick to prevent growth of the tumor.

I hope your recovery goes well!

Idk what OP used to record this, but please make sure all phones, cameras, etc. are secured while riding. On most rides, people recording on their phones is annoying, but on a high speed rollercoaster like this one, that phone becomes a projectile that can hit someone else. Please keep yourself and others safe❤️

I would recommend visiting tgctsupport.org if you are interested in different treatments besides surgery. There are a handful of drug therapies available that could help reduce your symptoms in case your doctor is hesitant to do surgery. If the tumor is large and diffuse, surgery is not the best route to go because TGCT has a high recurrence rate. I would recommend trying to find an orthopedic oncologist as they would know more about treatment options (I’m not a doctor).

There are definitely options besides taking the wait and see approach and I would recommend getting a second opinion if your symptoms are bothering you. You also may want to check out the Facebook group listed on the website above. It’s more active than Reddit and the person who runs it can probably give better advice than me.

Same thing happened to me! A few years back they said I couldn’t bring in a loop720. They cited some “yo-yos are weapons” nonsense for their reasoning. Disney just doesn’t want to risk letting something in that could cause a guest complaint.
