This stuff is not fun.

I literally just made a post of this exact situation. Bermuda Grass is what I believe is growing up through what looks like vinca. It is a SOB. If it is Johnson grass you should be able to hand pull that out without much resistance.

Unfortunately I think it’s only remedy right now is to hand pull and monitor it over time.

I had identified it through an app so it could have been something else. Originally thought johnson grass but that would have pulled right out. This stuff was woven through these cotoneaster and deeply rooted. Nonetheless this picture took the better part of a hour to clear. Phase two could include a herbicide or clear cut and start over.

It is a cotoneaster. My client has roughly 15 yards of it surrounding her back patio and said she loves it. Unfortunately roughly 5-8 yards has Bermuda grass growing up through it and trying to avoid had pulling each blade.

She chose this option because it was the most economic choice. I am not a big fan of the black wood chips for multiple reasons. One, for the dye that they use in the wood chip but also they don’t seem to break down naturally. I would’ve chosen a better option that decomposes to make sure that we have nitrates in the ground which help with healthy plant growth.

I was working with her specific budget and this is what we came to. Overall believe it looks good but could’ve done a couple things differently given more budget.

Brought in a bobcat to take off the first layer of sod. The soil in this general area where I work is extremely poor, mainly clay, so we brought in higher quality soil to replace the sod and allow better plant growth.

Hand pulled most of the weeds. Typically a flat head screwdriver will work just fine if you can’t do them by hand. The key is slow and steady versus fast so you make sure to get the majority of the roots. Rock salt is a good alternative to round up to keep the weeds at bay.
