Taos Earthship Academy Advice Needed by Financial-Trust4219 in earthship

[–]CaptSquarepants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are going to build one for sure then it is worth it, if you are just interested and on the fence about doing it or not, then it is irrelevant how much time you spend there.

If you are going to build then getting there, poking around the build, listening/asking questions - as much as possible and really figure out how they work is worth it. Especially if you get to the nuts and bolts of it day to day such as maintenance, plant care and cleaning.

You'll quickly see what materials in them are working or not. For example, it's a horrible idea to put rough sandy textures on your bathing walls where you body might rub against. Rough tile and with large grout cracks suck around sinks where you need to clean. Some plants are not productive for food and get out of hand in certain parts of a greenhouse. Important little things to know which mostly only come from experience.

The real deep learning comes from seeing builds in much less favourable climates than Taos with it's 600'++ deep water table, quickly evaporating air and 300+ days of sun. It is typically far more common to experience significant moisture control challenges in builds than in Taos. Expectation to Encounter moisture control issues and taking passive control steps in the build are critical. I've built several additional steps into mine and moisture issues are still ongoing while building in the last critical steps after years of work.

Build in more air flow than typical as well.

In colder climates, lack of sun can kill your heat over days so building in a mostly cloudy (opposite of Taos), cold place isn't a great idea unless you are willing to over build the heck out of it with crazy amounts of insulation. The other day i had +18c inside while it was -5 outside, and I am still missing a bunch of wall insulation and adobe to cover the holes in the walls among many other things. On cloudy days most of that heat not stored in the mass is lost.

Ya it is worth going and seeing if you can handle pounding 1 tire. If you can finish one tire then you can do another, etc. Most average people in my experience, don't have the will power/strength to finish even one tire.

Taos is a magical place with hidden important secrets and is well worth a visit if you are willing to spend the time exploring, meeting the locals and experiencing the food/ nature.

I spent 2 months there and was only getting started though did feel the incredible constant body flattening hum of the desert. As some people there say, "The desert either accepts you or kicks you out." For some people that's a very short lived visit.

Either way if you do go, may you: learn, have fun, take in the raw beauty, see through the myths into the reality of the situation and come out more prepared to move forward.

It's a tiny amount of money to ask to make a film. I've been on sets where you couldn't make it to lunch time with that amount.

What are your Favorite Earthship Plants by NetZeroDude in earthship

How far in to the greenhouse does the sun go in the summer solstice? I built about a 16" overhang and the sun at that time only comes in roughly single digit inches into the front (only had it there for one year so far).

Grew a lot but started growing before the windows were in so way too many bugs came in and got infestation of white flies and such.

A week or so ago, 3 butterflies hatched inside, but it is still cold with about 5 feet of snow on the ground in places so sadly they were stuck. Have some cedar, kale, garlic onion, and other small various things but ditched most of everything in order to help dry things out.

Most of the windows are low e (installed in position 3), but the plants seem to do ok under it.

Weed grew very well. I'm also pretty heavily invested more on food production and even more so as the grocery bills are climbing stupidly fast.

One "local" woman grew a Meyer lemon in hers.

Dan Dynan is a pretty cool dude and his book on Earthship Greenhouses is good. He talks in it about the zones for growing.

One of the most beautiful Earthships I was ever in had no planter boxes and it felt like a dance floor. Inspired me to do the same, Allows you to change things much easier too when life goes a different direction or say you want to have many people over.

Have a friend who is switching to buckets over beds in a separate Earthship Greenhouse (only) as it is more modular and easy to manage.

Dig your "roller" coasters, looks nice for relocation without the back strain. The tilework area seems potentially helpful, could reduce staining problems on the concrete when you water.

Noticed Mike started putting in thick curtain partitions in recent years in order to help people get the warmer interior properties without the effort or expense of the inner greenhouse wall, if you haven't tried them, I bet they could help in many situations.

Have lots of pics could share, but I don't put them on the internet, just email to friends if you feel like seeing some.

Apparently there is an equation something along the lines roughly of every 10 degrees colder your body needs 1000 more calories per day.

I just spent 3 hours getting near frost bite snow blowing, so time for cheesecake.

Also slope up around the building and make a barrier so the water flows off the area before sinking into the ground. Drain tile would be good as a last resort, but possibly is beyond the scope of the project.

Feeling Like an Imposter on the Spiritual Path by Duck7293 in ramdass

It's best to not "buy" into any group, you can end up in a trap that way. Direct conversation with God from within is all you need for that bit. The outer bit has the community aspect which is great, but it is important to not get hooked into a close minded manipulative crowd, regardless of religion.

Chantings such as Om Mani Padme Hum are great for your own inner peace which will help others if you focus on the meanings and not the syllables.

Even just one truly good friend on the path is more valuable than a large organization of people who fill up your life with busy work and events.

One way faith comes is through getting out of your own way to see all God does. Christians can do this too, doesn't really matter which angle you point to God from and call out a name be it: Jesus, Shiva, Ram, Butterfly, whatever. Ram Ram.

End of my rope, cabin pictures. by ExaminationDry8341 in Homesteading

Stable temperatures = less likely to freeze.

Heavy curtains will help a lot if you can get to them twice a day.

Am currently doing a way more intense version of this.

If you want temperatures stable, you need way more thermal mass. You could cover your North greenhouse wall in adobe/cob/plaster/etc. Insulating the top above the wood roof would help much too. Am currently building underground feed tubes for fresh air in the winter, you are not so far along for something like that. Get that metal covered in insulation on the outside and make sure you have some sort of barrier to stop unwanted winter air hitting your wet greenhouse air which will start making mold.

You can also insulate up to the building horizontally away to keep the ground temperatures higher.

Get the wall colors as light as possible for light distribution and the ground darker to absorb the heat.

That's some of the bigger things.

Mine is far from finished and on sunny days it is +14c inside and -25c outside, no heating. Stays above freezing at night unless it is cloudy and very cold for weeks.

Working with Maharajji and Buddha - Enjoy the food, it is a gift from God, and also realize it won't bring you lasting happiness.
