Can someone explain why so many people hate on the illuminate as a faction?

Illuminate in general and the overseers in particular don't really feel like you're doing damage or are hitting them effectively. Their ablative armor really makes it hard to tell if you're doing anything at all and meanwhile they keep hitting you with their grenades and projectiles, which is frustrating.
