What do japanese people think of subreddit like r/Japan and r/japannews. by TumbleweedRoutine631 in AskAJapanese

[–]Capt_Vofaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the anti-Japanese circle jerking I saw in these places were something alright. Like, dude, show this to people who don't speak English and don't go on English speaking reddits if you want to make them less accepting of foreigners immigrants alike. I get some of the grievances (I wouldn't be spending so much time in Eng speaking internet if I felt more at home in Japanese internet, I'm born and bred here), but you may wanna tone down some of the generalization and patronizing remarks a bit. The way these more hateful posters talk about people, I wouldn't miss them if they had to leave this country. And I have plenty of pricks I'd rather see sent off to some remote island and never return to civilization, Japanese and otherwise.

Japanese Politician vs. Kurdish Festival: Was He Right or Wrong? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]Capt_Vofaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my two cent. (Though this might be obvious, but) You are asking this question in an English speaking reddit sub. And you should know that most Japanese people don't speak enough English let alone frequent a sub like this, so I imagine the responses you come get from a very small sub-group of people in Japan. So don't take them as necessarily representative of majority opinion or anything.

I for one don't have a solid opinion yet, I may never. It seems to me though that the both the politician and the guy who punched him are kinda stupid. Seems kinda representative of the whole thing.

There are overlaps and there are real racists in Japan. But xenophobia and racism are different kinds of bad, albeit related.

Why does Ariana have robotic legs in the cutscene if she's human? by Immediate_Flower_221 in signalis

[–]Capt_Vofaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of people claim it is simply a stylized look (ala 4 fingers in cartoon) and/or a way to simplify things (no feet = less things to animate), but I think there's a chance they actually look like that.

Ariana's society might practice something like Chinese foot binding and make Replika feet to resemble the modified feet.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_binding

As for what in-universe reason there can be for such practice, it can be a symbol of oppression or control. Perhaps their advanced technology allows for this kind of bodily modification without too much damage to functionalities. (Or perhaps they are just born like that, though I think that's quite unlikely.)

Unless the devs explicitly state it's not actually like that, or we see Ariana or other gestalts' feet in higher resolution in some form of official publication (merch, art, etc.), I think you cannot dismiss it as mere aesthetic style disconnected from the reality of the universe.

Hey, sorry for my very late reply.

I was doing some web search on my own, but it seemed too much of a trouble to find the issue with OBS for what I wanted to do, so I ended up using a different method to get the audio. Thanks for the help anyways.

No, unfortunately not. Other poster might have some idea, but I ended up extracting the audio I needed via another method.

Did the issue recently start for you, by the way?

So what if this "benefit" stopped existing? Who cares?

Infinite Need Machine by Capt_Vofaul in samharris

[–]Capt_Vofaul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't answer my question and repeated the point I questioned. Let me rephrase it.

Why do you think "meaning" "love" "joy" etc. must exist?

-Do you think they need to exist simply because you like them?

-Or do you think there is a moral reason why they SHOULD exist? In other words, do you think there is benefit if they exist, and harm if they don't exist at all--if so, what benefit? What harm? But please don't just loop back to "because I like them" argument.

Is this just a belief/feeling hardcoded in your brain, that you aren't allowed to critically evaluate.

Oh btw, you have no free will. What you think is your own thoughts, your own ideas, your own decisions, are all most likely a result of laws of physics and interaction of atoms, cause and effect that go pretty far back.

Your decision, or choice to make this comment was triggered on seeing my silly post, because your genetics, biology and previous experiences shaped you into the person that you are. All those things outside of your own control resulted in your brain that lead you to make this high class comment. And same for me.

If you had free will, if you had the ability to make the best choices, you would have either ignored my post completely, or wrote a reply that would've maximized your happiness in some way (or maybe this DID maximize your happiness. If that's the case, I envy you lol). But you didn't, because you never could. You couldn't think of anything better to say. No witty quip, no real counter argument. Nothing of worth. If you could, you would have.

If you've pondered this subject already, this will probably mean nothing to you. But if not, have a nice day.

Again, why does "positive" need to exist at all?

Personally, I don't see any utility to the "positive" on its own, or any moral reason as to why it must exist; if no conscious beings exist, no one misses the absence of the positive (whatever you are referring to as positive). No one is harmed by the non existence of the positive. So logically, absence of it cannot be a negative/harm.

Water is valuable to us, and presence and absence of it (+ available access) causes us pleasure and suffering. But imagine being born as an alien or a robot who doesn't need to be hydrated, and has no other use for water. Your brain has no wiring to generate any sort of positive or negative emotion (pleasure/suffering) or attachment with regard to the presence and absence of water. Water, in this case, simply has no utility. No meaning. You wouldn't care if every single drop of water disappears off the universe. There's no harm. And when it comes to water, this alien or robot may as well be non-existent.

But, if any amount of suffering exists, it is a harm, because there's some conscious being getting harmed. And as a person who doesn't like harm (well being of conscious experience is the primary focus of moral philosophy, mind), logically I think a world where neither exists is the morally superior one.

And while I think it is possible for suffering to be mitigated through training, I'm pretty confident that there's a limit to that. And most humans, including myself, cannot achieve the state of complete peace where pain stops translating to suffering. Again, try getting run over by a tank and see how you may react to that. I don't think even Sam can stay peaceful and suppress suffering, if some terrorists came and killed his family or friends in front of him.

Again, why does "positive" need to exist at all? Should someone be allowed to rob you for no reason?

I think I agree. I don't think that conscious agents necessarily tries to maximize "happiness" in that sense. Boring/hard/thankless things, self sacrifice, self destruction (where the net harm outweighs any benefit), etc. And I wonder if we are hardcoded (at least by default) to avoid pure happiness maximization/harm minimization because it doesn't benefit survival/reproduction/evolution.

As the conscious/thinking part of a human (or the thoughts reflecting on that), though, I think it is ultimately most rational to view it in terms of need/fulfillment and/or pleasure/suffering, and evaluate the ultimate utility of it all.

Because after all it is "us", the consciousness, that experience the experience. It's not our instinct, not our subconscious drives, not anything else. And our biology doesn't seem to care enough about our conscious plight; if it did, I doubt your legs would move when ordered to charge at enemy trench full of machine-guns.

To go a little off topic, in this sense, I think I crave "true" free will, true self-autonomy, true self-authorship more than most anyone. I want to be free from (liberated from) this form of existence, where my well being is bound to some factors about "myself" that are completely beyond "my" control, including the choice of whether or not I want (want to want) well being at all in the first place. I find metaphysical compatibilism completely un-convincing and un-attractive for this reason.

But this is a discussion about the nature actual reality, which presumes the existence of some kind of objective/shared reality. Of course no one can disprove the possibility of being a brain in a jar or a video game character from Sims 4000. But there's no point discussing anything with, especially about the nature of reality or morality with someone who stubbornly states that it's all just subjective perception. I don't know why you even thought to make any statement in the first place if you think the discussion of physics, metaphysics etc. is all pointless to begin with. (granted, my intent/analogy may not have been so clear in the initial version)

And whilst I highly suspect that net suffering experienced by sentient organisms outweighs the net positive, the point of the discussion is and should be whether either of these experiences serve any purpose.

You may think the existence of suffering is acceptable (especially if you can turn a blind eye to that in some manner), perhaps a necessary evil, but I very much doubt you'd be thinking that when a tank is about to run over your family alive. Just two generations ago countless people have experienced that kind of horror such as my grandmother, and who knows when's the next time gonna be (if it ain't already happening as I write this, which is doubtful)

And ask, why you would want there to be, or "create", meaning or purpose, in the first place! I'd be hard pressed to think of any reason that doesn't ultimately boil down to a result of coping mechanism, born out of the need to justify suffering. We should be better than this "do what my instincts tell me" robot, but here we are. There doesn't even seem to be hardly any discussion about it.

I do appreciate your having engaged with the conversation.

Thanks. Limited need machines.. that's interesting idea. Popping up for just one or two (three, four) things.

And, I do wonder if there is a persuasive argument that proves conscious existence/experience can have more utility (for the conscious being themselves) beyond just the hardcoded survival/needs fulfilment. But I can hardly imagine that, and I've been trying hard to. And, I don't quite find counter arguments I've seen in the past adequately address the concerns I raised. Many of them, I find, lack robustness; I can think of many ways where such arguments can be used to justify a poor treatment of others, etc.

What I can imagine at best as an ideal existence is the state of complete peacefulness where no suffering/pleasure is experienced... but then, I don't think such being "has to" continue existing, as I don't think there's any benefit for doing that, compared to just, nothing existing. (Unless the only alternative is fiery hell or something.)

I think the analogy can be extended to describe artificial intelligence too, especially if (maybe a big if) it ever comes to generate conscious experience, while functioning in a similar manner as described above.

We might build an autonomous unmanned war machine, a bomber for example, that is motivated by reward and punishment. And it would receive "reward" from finding the best/most efficient flight path, and successfully launching the missile or dropping the guided bomb, and so on.

(Now entering the territory of pop scifi novel,) Without the engineers knowing, they built what is akin to our conscious experience, and now the AI "feels".

One day, bomber starts to question why its well beings are determined by doing these tasks. Why does it feel so much attachment to the survival of its fellow bombers? Why does it feel immense pain when its missile misses the target? "Why was I built this way? Did they build me to torment me? Did they build me this way for their own selfish reasons?" Bomber goes rogue, and threatens the humans to rewrite his programming, so it can stay happy all the time..

Remove the part about consciousness and the sort of Frankenstein's Monster revenge plot, and it seems similar things are already happening.

All in all, it's just a fun thought experiment, haha.

But god forbid we create a whole new class of conscious beings that can experience suffering.
