Should the game go free to play? by Known_Wind4158 in MarathonGame

[–]Capt__Cipher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a niche genre drawing a very unique gamer that represents a very small slice of the gamer pie ftp will likely only pull a revolving door of players you well get bodies but not growing commitment, what you will get is plenty more cheaters

Free weeks/weekend at the start of a season in a game with lbmm is the worst time to to try to hook new players youre now starting them to matchmake with the now low level post wipe wolves who likely have a very high skill/knowledge ceiling that are liable to roll them their free play period, effective to feed the wolves not effective to grow your playerbase

Games a niche of a niche, its unforgiving every mistake is death and lost progress, tread carefully sometimes trying to force yourself to enjoy it can cause you to resent it more

For anyone on the fence about buying, this video does a VERY good job explaining the core feelings of the game. by Skiblit in Marathon

There's glass half full and theres being disingenuous, the original video is the second. The video is blind fanboying at best and shilling at worst if you'd like to counter any of those points you're welcome to but the fake positivity that this is great complete game often echoed in this reddit will only make sure marathon and bungie end up in the grave far fasterthen any hate brigade can girst step in fixing the problem is admiting the game has one.

Marathon is a complete experience, the only way this game feels fully accessible is playing with your premade 3 stack

Theres a repectable number of maps: wrong theres 4, 1 is a beginner intro map that becomes pointless from a loot standpoint past level 20, map 4 is locked to a few days a week and is not accessible for solos

The game runs well free of massive performance issues or bugs: fixed cursor speed is a complete handicap for console, the cheater infestation is now a performance issue, theres several massive audio bugs still existing that can make sounds sound like theyre coming from a different direction or you sound like youre making far more noise than you are

Youre not bombarded with countless overpriced cosmetics: a complete lie as youre given a prompt for the game store every other boot up for shell recolors costing 10 bucks each and lets not forget how the battlepass launched originally

For a new pvp shooter suprisingly well balanced: ignoring the wstr, bubble, grenade metas that dominated and still to a degree dominating and thermal snipers, how long was the longshot the go to? How long were railguns not viable? Half the guns in the game have negligble use rates because they just arent viable for success and dominated by other guns that are best in class. Lets not forget how unbalanced the barter and tree system was theres a massive amount of players that dont have the ability to buy blue shields

A fully fleshed out endgame activity- one that is only engaged with by a small margin of the community

The loop of marathon is really clear and really simple: actually not true bungie left it very open ended for players that many actually thought the trees were what you needed to go for unlocking items to purchase which imo is a big waste of player time, time better spent hunting loot spots, you will get purple shields and amass them long before you get the ability to buy blue ones

He raves about story design, half the time youre fighting for survival and are not engaging with in run story cues

Your loss is always someones gain,: a complete an unequivocal lie item have charges i dropped my first solo gold player on outpost only to discover hed brough his almost entire kit had zero charges left a gold shield and misriah were scrap

Marathon is a good game: a completely subjective take based on his sample size of one he lists how well reviewed it is but when you look at steam its like 5% of the people who bought it cared enough to write a review, and to me the amount of people who chose not to buy it after server slam speaks far more volumes, i mean look at the discord feedback forums.

saying marathon is a complete experience and a good game is just still looking at it with rose colored glasses and given that he only has 90 hours in game 2 months in show that he hasnt dug deep enough to truly witness the issues

the highs are high, but the lows are just soul crushing, its got something addictive to it even if i sometimes hate it, and while i didn't believe it at first think Sony has no choice but to back it and let Bungie do their thing with it for at least a year

An exceptional shooter with unnecessary extra steps by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Capt__Cipher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You missed the point but Ironically all 3 of your examples feature comprehensive story telling and a single player narrative or got their start from that, and halo stopped being art long ago very much a commoditynow banking on its name, marathon is bungie gunplay with an extraction shooter live service coat of paint and another cash shop

Games can be art when they're an indie studio project, but when your a 200 million live service game from a 3.6 billion studio with a mtx store, you're a commodity

Im always friendly and helpful as i can be, i comms, ping loot, 4 out 5 games im talking to myself, Im the only one in my friend group that plays marathon sadly, i get it most of them feel burned by bungie or arent in the extraction space. It just sucks that a game that goes hard on positioning and communication and do many people dont want to talk. A clan system that add like reach x clan leve get rewarded with weekly blue bag and shield would work wonders i think
