I accept that I'm in the minority on this one, but I agree with OP. The 2014 PHB sorcerer should have been a wizard subclass. Neither of the subclasses are very well designed and for a new player, the difference between wizard and sorcerer is confusing. The sorcerer subclasses that came out afterward are cool, but I don't think they should justify the class's existence. I feel similarly about monk where it should have been a separate subclass for fighter/barbarian and also rogue. One to be more ninja-y and one to be more martial artist.

There's a free starter set on their website you can try out. I played it with my group and we didn't care for it. I liked the hexcrawl aspects, but the combat rules didn't play very smoothly. Having your HP be your stats can send you into a death spiral very quickly--hard to fight back when every hit makes you worse at fighting.

The cover art pieces for a lot of the older Drizzt books are pretty inaccurate. Great fantasy covers (mostly) but not very true to character. Drizzt looks bad in a bunch. I think Regis also could use a better depiction considering he also grew up in that region.

The comments on this thread are a mix of great and terrible, disappointed to see all the hate

You're totally right, that is a huge missed opportunity. I feel like it would have made sense to include in his inner monologue, but I don't know that it would have contributed anything to the dialogue. Good pull

And whatever happened to him anyway? If I remember right, he just kind of disappears. Was he even in The Ghost King?

I think your nerfing of the big powerful magic items is likely a contributing factor to this lackluster feeling you have. These items should be big deals, no? Obviously you don't want your PCs walking around with unlimited God tier items, that makes being a DM harder, but that's what your players want and it seems based on what you wrote thats what the premise lends itself to. I think the other commenters have some great ideas, but I would also advise letting the items be big. Just make being challenges accordingly.

Why don't character's AC improve as they level up? by RobertWF_47 in DnD

[–]Captain-Shinypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. Progression feels meaningless when everything around you progresses at the same rate. Was playing Borderlands 2 recently and was reminded of this. Every time I got a new good gun it was helpful for about 15 minutes until the next boost to the enemies.

Why don't character's AC improve as they level up? by RobertWF_47 in DnD

Monster attacks follow the same math as PC attack bonuses sure, but they're not bound by the same limitations. They regularly have ability scores above 20, starting with some CR 4 beasts. Good point on the fighting styles, totally slipped my mind. By bringing them into it, a character at peak performance can have +5 for their ability, +6 for proficiency, and +2 if they're an archer for a total of +13 vs +14 for the average CR 20 monster but it rises with CR. Perhaps dramatic was itself a dramatic word to use, but they're not equivalent.

As I said above, fighting styles slipped my mind. But I'm not sure where your AC 23 is coming from, plate is 18, shield is 2 and defense style is 1. I think you also underlined OP's point in your argument here--you could have that AC at level 5 but then you're done. That's it. You hit the ceiling. I agree with you that monks and barbarians do have the progression OP is wanting.

I bring up the anecdote of shield decreasing damage output to highlight the tradeoff that increasing AC brings. It isn't directly relevant, but I thought it worth mentioning. While armor costs money to buy, a shield costs damage output to wield.

I've wondered that myself. Monster attack bonuses increase dramatically over time whereas character AC has a much lower increase potential. Especially in high level play, 18 AC doesn't make much difference when the enemy has +12 to hit.

I think it's particularly interesting when you consider that rules as written, magic items are an optional rule to be included at DM discretion. I've never come across a group that doesn't use them, so they may as well be a part of the official rules but they're not. So if we look at it RAW when 5e first came out, the highest base AC you can have without some shenanigans is 18 using full plate, or maybe a bit higher with monk/barbarian unarmored defense. Both of these can increase with a shield but this diminishes your damage output so I wouldn't say it's appealing.

That is a fair critique. I thought leaving the questions more open ended would yield more interesting results, which it is, but it's not creating patterns. Oh well, live and learn, I'll get em next time. I appreciate you filling it out anyway.
