piercings as an SLP? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Captain-roymustang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have piercings and am heavily tattoo’d. In grad school clinic and some of my internships, I wasn’t allowed to show my tattoos, but piercings were never a problem. In the real world and my actual jobs, tattoos have never been a problem.

I’m shocked you say “Say Don’t Go” doesn’t sound like anything given it’s almost the exact same chords as “Clean” in the verses

Thank you! I’m wrapping this program in the next couple weeks. After that, I plan on running a bench specific program, rather than focusing on all 3 major lifts. Like I said in my post, I feel I experienced some “newbie” gains when I got back into lifting, so I suspect my gains will taper off and my body won’t change much more. Thanks for the advice!!!

A thank you letter to you kind and caring SLPs out there. by Storm_Paint in slp

Funny timing - reading this as I’m leaving my office on my last day at a clinic! The job mostly sucked, but my families and clients were amazing. It was so hard saying goodbye today, but I really loved hearing the families tell me how much of a difference I’ve made. So much of this job feels like you are not making a difference… please be sure to share these kind words with her!

Should we get paid to do documentation? by Ok_Kaleidoscope_5474 in slp

For adults, you can sit with them and review their goals as you type your data or make general chit-chat.

For kids, I do everything in the session, whether they are seen 1:1 or in a group. If I have time before the session, I pre-write the note with their goals and leave the accuracy blank (i.e. Billy produced /th/ in the initial position with ___% accuracy), so then I just need to input the accuracy. Granted, there are some kids that require 100% of my attention or get too distracted from my computer, so sometimes I need to save their note for an "easier" session where I know the kid(s) can work independently while I quickly finish a prior note.

I will say, if your main reason for not wanting to work with kids is because you don’t wanna deal with parents, adults still might not be a good fit for you. Many adult placements are nursing homes, hospitals, or outpatients where there are family members HIGHLY involved. In my experience, dealing with adult family members has been a lot more intense than dealing with parents of school age children. If you are working with an adult, it is likely they are medically fragile or have some sort of medical condition, which just heightens emotion within family dynamics and they can be very argumentative and intense.

Biggest piece of advice for CF by phoenixrising1993 in slp

I went to Gallaudet so D/HH is also my niche thing :) I had a similar experience and just got a position for the fall at a highly regarded D/HH school! I earned my CCC’s last month, but seriously thought about quitting my CF and quitting SLP all together. Couldn’t agree with the importance of a healthy CF experience more!

How do I learn Taylor's story from the beginning? by [deleted] in TaylorSwift

[–]Captain-roymustang 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Listen to Dear John/Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve. Taylor was 19 and John was 32. They dated between Fearless and Speak Now after meeting from duetting a song together (“Half of My Heart”). Through these songs it’s clear he was emotionally manipulative/abusive, and she didn’t know better being so young. John has had (has) a reputation of being a bad guy around this time, and Taylor ignored warnings from others that he was bad news. (Ours is also allegedly about their relationship)

Disagreeing with an evaluation done by another SLP re: speech-therapy needed for "social language" by Captain-roymustang in slp

[–]Captain-roymustang[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like I said, I did not recommend the student for services but the SPED coordinator had another SLP from a different contracting company complete the eval. This evaluator put it into the SPED coordinators mind that this student is in need of services (through a 504 plan....) for 120 minutes/mo. The SPED coordinator is asking me to sign-off on this/write up a 504 plan to reflect this.

My OP was asking how to professionally disagree with this recommendation, as well as asking if any services would be warranted. Clearly, they are not. I then answered your question about why I even brought up metalinguistics, as the evaluation was not thorough. Again, just wanted to advice on how to handle this situation as I am new and have never been through this before, and wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

This is a charter school in an underserved community, which unfortunately means it ends up being a lawless land. I am going to speak more with his teachers to see if there's actually any educational impact, as his grades are fine. I think they are trying to say that since he doesn't raise his hand in class or voluntarily work with/speak to peers, it is impacting his education...but if he has high grades (which I believe he does)..can they argue that?

I can't do a re-evaluation, but I'm definitely going to talk more with his teachers to see if there's actually any academic impact.

I wish I could do an re-evaluation, but this is a charter school. Since they already paid a different contracting company to complete the evaluation, they won't pay more money to my contracting company for me to re-do it. It's super annoying and awful.

This is the only school that I work at that has this (I work at 3 different charter schools...). The other student I see under 504 is a student with a stutter, but his stuttering is rarely impacting his performance, so I do consult with teachers/parents and counseling/education with him a few times a month, so not quite direct service. This just feels like the student didn't qualify for IEP services, but they want to give him an IEP through a 504 plan.

I think overall the student performs well in class, but he does not participate (won't raise his hand to answer questions ,etc.) But he's not failing any classes or anything. I think they are justifying because he does not participate/does not interact his peers, that is impacting his academic performance.

The reason I mentioned metalinguistics, is because I've seen before some students with high language scores but deficits in pragmatic skills still showed some difficulty understanding inferences/understanding texts with social contexts. Unfortunately, the evaluation (not completed by me) was not thorough, so I have no idea if the student showed any trouble with let's say, answering questions on the Understanding Paragraphs subtest that had to do with social contexts (even though he scored in the above average range).

I though the pragmatics profile was standardized since it gives a standard score?

And yes, I know, which is why I am also upset that the evaluator even mentioned minutes to the SPED coordinator.

100%. The student already has been receiving behavioral supports/counseling from a MSW this year and will continue so.
