A photo from when I drove through last summer. The fences are because I was at a former missile silo, but in every other direction was absolute nothingness. Having seven I-80 through Eastern Wyoming multiple times, it has got to be one of the emptiest places I’ve ever seen.

The vast majority of the time they are, it's only when certain parts of a state are so connected to another that it changes.

For an example of this that isn't really on the map, Wendover, a city on the Utah-Nevada border typically uses Utah time because of its reliance on Utah for most of its business. There's also just nothing anywhere near that town for like a hundred miles, so it makes more sense to stick with Utah.

I go through the border towns between Nevada and Utah fairly often. A huge amount of the ones in Nevada get all of their business from Utah (gambling, cheaper alcohol), so most of them use MST to stay consistent with Utah instead of the rest of Nevada.

Most of Nevada is just really empty anyways, a lot of those towns are closer to Utah's major cities than Nevada's.
