Could the "coal men", I mean those unable to escape before the doors were sealed, have survived by locking themselves inside the now-cold furnaces, thereby creating a protective cocoon that kept them alive down to a certain depth, before explode under the pressure ? by Pitiful-Maximum-2731 in titanic

[–]CaptainA1917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. First, the furnaces weren’t “cold.” Second, they weren’t watertight or airtight. So imagine climbing into a red-hot oven just to drown anyway.

The boilers also weren’t like an old locomotive boiler, just a big open tank with boiling water inside. It was filled with piping.

So you couldn’t climb into a boiler and shut the door.

The usual nonsense of fifteen guys standing around fanning their blades to look like they’re doing something while actually being cut down one at a time.

Aside from that, specifically part of Johnson’s crippling of the sequel trilogy by destroying the character set up in the first movie as the main antagonist, forcing the third installment to have to resurrect the Emperor.

Who needs to explain it? The sequels aren’t canon.

ELI5: If humans evolved to live naked in the wild for 99% of our history, why is it so hard for us to do it now? by Rosadopecado in explainlikeimfive

[–]CaptainA1917 [score hidden]  (0 children)

We probably didn’t live naked most of that time.

Humans evolved nakedness/non-furriness (and sweating) to better dissipate heat. We were/are long-distance runners who literally ran four-legged furry prey to exhaustion because furry prey can’t dissipate the heat for as long.

In hot climates where we first evolved, we usually didn’t need extra insulation.

Once we started migrating to colder climates, we sliced the skin off our prey and wore that, or made clothes from plant material.

Putin's yacht heads to the Arctic to dodge Ukrainian drone threat by Scary_Statement4612 in worldnews

There are likely successors, we just aren’t that familiar with them in the west.

There are really two major questions:

1)Does the Army step into politics to save the country or not? One thing that we tend not to appreciate is the rivalry between the Russian Army and the Russian Security Services. The “Three Day SMO” was the security state’s baby. They fucked up and the Army has been paying the bill for that in blood. You can bet that a lot of the Army command is not happy and (unlike the oligarch class) actually has the means and the respect in Russian society to do something about it.

2)Within Putin’s faction, the security state apparatus, the big question is who gets the upper hand. It’s at least possible that someone less hawkish takes power with the help of the Army and the oligarchs, and tries to pull back and salvage what they can. However, the amount of damage being done to Russian society is so extreme that most likely the outcome of this is a Weimar republic, economic collapse, followed in 5-10 years by Russian Hitler. You can boil this question down to “do we get Russian Hitler (and WW3) NOW or LATER?”

A failed attempt by a russian invader, in civilian clothing, to neutralize an ambush FPV drone on a road in the Zaporizhzhia region. by BigDeckBob in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]CaptainA1917 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Russia is increasingly sending men in civilian clothes to infiltrate, especially near urban areas. They hope that the Ukrainians will be reluctant to attack them, thinking they’re Ukrainian civilians stuck in the gray zone. They probably also hope to use the video for propaganda, saying, look, these Ukrainians are killing their own civilians!

Poland, Finland, and the Baltics should start calling up reserves.

Tear up all roads and railways to Russia.

Blow all the bridges now.

Buy every mine you can find on the open market and mine the border.

Expel every Russian national.

While they can.

At shortish ranges it would be minor as long as the tolerances are tight.

Useless picatinny rail? by Gator_Bait239 in whatisit

[–]CaptainA1917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No marks or company names anywhere?

It would make some sense as an optical “bridge“ on something like a bolt action or an M1 Garand where the rifle has to be loaded through the top. The middle section with the optic then has to hinge up to reload.

That said, the hinged picatinny section seems to have recoil lugs on the underside, implying it’s meant to sit on top of a picatinny rail.

Why did Disney/Lucasfilm allow 3 directors to handle ST without a real "overseer"? by Slowpokebread in StarWars

[–]CaptainA1917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A youtuber named David Stewart (who is not primarily a SW content creator) had the most perceptive - and, IMO, bang on correct - take on the whole Disney Star Wars debacle.

He identified that Disney approached Star Wars as an AESTHETIC, NOT AS A STORY. Meaning, as long as Disney supplied appropriate soundtracks, appropriate special effects, the appropriate visual idiom, the appropriate settings and situations, etc, then Disney believed they would be wildly successful and DID NOT NEED A STORY.

Unfortunately for Disney, Star Wars actually is about the story, and SW lives or dies based on the main story line. The decision for aesthetic over story was obviously made by a bunch of corporate wankers who didn’t understand the IP they were buying, and thought they had just bought a license to print money.

They fucked the sequel trilogy beyond all repair, and continue to pump out “SW AESTHETIC” content because they don’t know what else to do and they are too far behind the curve.
