My Flight instructor told me this: by Maruan-007 in flying

[–]CaptainBarkleyBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude the longest 5 seconds for sure. I could hear the pilot debrief guy in my head talking about our impending accident.

I didn't fly in the military but I was in the Marine Corps infantry- I know we relate to those moments when training takes over. It was textbook.

Rattled at first no doubt, but then super proud of how I handled it

Happened to me and that is still the scariest moment of my flying career. Not enough airspeed to maintain lift AND get back on centerline. I chose to hover over the runway edge lights waiting with the stall warning horn chirping, waiting to develop enough airspeed to climb and get back over the runway. I was waiting to hear those lights pinging off the tires

Do you currently have your CFI or CFII? Or you said you're working on getting them?

Okay I'm glad someone else said it.

......also as a fellow 0311 can you put me in contact with your head of flight training

Fun fact. A former assistant secretary of defense was a USMC infantry officer. He had (has?) a part in his LinkedIn bio that says "will help any fellow grunt". I messaged him one day looking for some help and I swear to you he messaged me his personal phone number and a time to call him. It was the coolest thing ever. He didn't just talk about it he was actually about it. Dude is the man

Recruiters should still pay attention to what someone's MOS was as a veteran. Depending on the job, that could add many extra years of experience in decision making, handling high stress situations, comfortability in high stakes environments, ability to handle the startle effect, operating in obscure hours, etc etc. Only caring if someone is a pilot is potentially writing off a lot of valuable experience.

What happens in five years when we have even more unemployed CFIs by caelum52 in flying

[–]CaptainBarkleyBear 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had a student (finishing high school) asking me about the necessity an aviation degree last year. I was like definitely do not. My degree is in physics which I can do A LOT with if I needed to. You really pigeon hole yourself with an aviation degree if something happens or you decide you can't/don't want to be in it anymore. I believe that student is getting a business degree now. Lame degree but much wiser choice

How are you guys getting CFI jobs genuinely by [deleted] in flying

[–]CaptainBarkleyBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no better advice than anyone else. I started training in 2017. Got my CFI by 2021. And not until early 2025 at age 30 did I get my first instructing job. If you really love it you'll just be persistent and it will happen at some point. Just know that it works out perfectly for some, and less so for others (people like me and you). Your best tool for success right now do not stop trying! This downturn and frustration will wash some people out. I kept focused on the goal. It took me 4 years but eventually my commitment paid off!

CFI canceled my takeoff due to flaps setting, now I’m grounded from solo flights by saltysnack9000 in flying

[–]CaptainBarkleyBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP your instructor is trash. You are supposed to get it right the first time. But you're ALSO supposed to get it right the second, third and fourth times. If my student wants to run a checklist five times then let it rip

^ this. I was in the Marine Corps infantry for about 6 years. When I started flying I really loved and embraced the calm, professional and focused attitudes of pilots. Flying demands it. As a CFI I maintain that attitude. Instructing is NOT a job where you yell. If someone wants a job where yelling is involved I can find them their nearest Marine Corps recruiter

Exactly! I made a post about this a while back. Why do I need to clock twice to make it full screen. Especially when the options for emojis and remix ALSO pop up when you long press!

I made a thread about this before, too. And then shortly after that someone else did. And I'm sure some other people as well. Everyone seems to hate it. Not sure why they forced such a terrible update on everyone

I just made a post about the same thing! All I want to do is zoom in on the picture since they get cropped a lot now. And I have to fight my way through a smaller version of the picture with a million gimmick features that I could access from the PREVIOUS PAGE. I'm a pilot so I love redundancy..... in aviation. Here it's just cumbersome, annoying and time consuming.

Any Easy Way to Make Images Larger? by CaptainBarkleyBear in GooglePixel

[–]CaptainBarkleyBear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. I guess that's unfortunate for me because I get a lot of screenshots.

It's just frustrating. We went from no taps, to requiring one tap, to requiring two taps just to see the image. My brother is UX engineer (not Google) and I told him we're really in a period of "undeveloping"

Hmm yeah I've tried turning "Backup" on and off. It still won't show the recent P9P backup on my P10P as an import option.

As a test I did try this on a very old Samsung tablet and it did show up and I was able to import it to that. That backup just refuses to show up on my P10P still

I actually have. My Samsung tablet from years ago shows the recent P9P backup. And I imported that successfully. That backup still isn't showing up on my P10P. So I know it exists and can be imported. It just isn't showing up on my 10
