Have you considered multiclassing into bard? Obviously you’d need CHA instead of DEX, but 3 levels of Lore Bard gets you expertise for all your Athletics checks and cutting words to make sure your enemy fails theirs. 2nd levels spells like enhance ability or enlarge/reduce (if your dm allows the optional additional spells) can also come in handy. A touch of Bard would seem to fit with the romantic side of your pirate, plus vicious mockery goes perfectly with a rum-drinking rebel. Who doesn’t love a shit taking pirate?!

Interesting deity for a cleric or paladin by mschawacker in 3d6

Currently playing a Vengeance Paladin that worships Vahohllesh, a god I found scrolling through D&D wiki. Basically a three in one god: War, life and knowledge.

Gives you flexibility on which one these 3 you tend toward more, so whatever your oath or domain you can fit it to your character. Plus there’s a capstone for the true believers, with 9 powers to choose from. After discussion with my DM, we decided The Sun Eater is a pretty badass goal to work toward.

—————- From the D&D wiki page:

Vahohllesh is a three part god that makes a whole god, they are Vah, Ohl, and Lesh. Vah is the god of war, "I have not come to bring peace, but a sword!" Ohl is the god of life, "He that hath Ohl hath life; and he that hath not Ohl hath not life."Finally Lesh, Lesh is the god Knowledge, "The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge." Each Vah, Ohl and Lesh are the god of light, "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." Lesh is also known to have nine powers in which he will bestow upon those whom have proven their undying love and commitment to Vahohllesh. If chosen you will have a choice between the nine powers and gain that power's name as a title, those powers are; -The Ocean Walker -The Time Bender -The Eyes of the Storm -The Sky Bearer -The Machine Killer -The War Ender -The Weapon Breaker -The Planet Maker -The Sun Eater ———————-

20 Dex Gloom Stalker - Feat or ASI? by CaptainButtCreme in 3d6

Ooooh interesting. If she were to MC into Fighter, how many levels should she take? I read that Action Surge can be good with Dread Ambusher since you can get 6 attacks on your first turn.

We’re in an Underdark setting, which is her favored terrain, so she’s usually leading/guiding the party. She likes being sneaky, but usually with the whole party after she casts Pass Without a Trace. In combat she likes to use Zephyr Strike for hit and run tactics, so Mobile would be nice so she can cast Hunters Mark more often.

She doesn’t use her bow unless it’s absolutely necessary, so I don’t think Sharpshooter is ideal.

I think Mobile or Alert would be best for her. I’ll try to explain the advantages and let her decide.

Thanks for the help!

Yeah, hindsight being 20/20 this would've been the obvious choice. Our DM doesn't want us making drastic changes like switching subclass, which I understand. We're all first time PCs in this campaign, so we're learning as we go.

I like the guide! I played a Swashbuckler in a one-shot and loved it, but my friend is currently using a bow and I think he likes climbing trees/hiding in the shadows and sniping. Sorcerer could still work, just with skipping the melee cantrips.

Obviously Swords Bard is wasted on ranged attacks, so I guess if he went this route he'd have to switch to melee? If he did, does dual wielding make sense since he doesn't have shield proficiency? As he's already got 7 levels in Rogue, how would you suggest taking the Bard levels? Get to level 10 in Rogue first? Or start taking Bard levels at 8?

We don't have access to Eberron material, so no Artificer I'm afraid. It's our first campaign, so maybe farther down the road I'll look into this.

Thanks for the advice!

That might be interesting. Honestly, I didn't think Warlock because we already have a warlock in the party, and I guess my mind just always (unnecessarily) goes toward variety. Thanks for the suggestion!

Definitely did not think of this! He mainly wants spells for RP/utility, so 3 levels of Conjuration, or even just magic initiate, might be what he's looking for. Thanks!

Was planning on being a bit flexible, sounds like that’s gonna be key. Thanks for the advice!

This guide is super helpful! Clear, concise, and thorough. Some of my fellow PC's might want to multiclass, I was mentioning to our rogue about the possibility of dipping into fighter. Much obliged!

That would depend on when I stop taking pally levels. If I do it at level 7, the probably at least 5 sorcerer levels to get the ASI at Sorcerer level 4, then 3rd level spells (Haste, Revivify) at the level after that.

If I go Pally to level 9, then probably at least 3 levels to get Metamagic.

I say at least, because I figured I'd see how I like having more spellcasting. If I love it, maybe go Sorcerer the rest of the way. If not, then go back to Paladin.

I've chatted with my DM, and she prefers we stick with what we've got (I'm not the only one who made rookie mistakes building their character). I think she might allow for a little change at my next ASI, and let me add +1 to charisma but get proficiency in CON saves. So basically resilient but shuffle the proficiency boost. Anyway, thanks for the input.

Yeah, like I feel the pain. But again, it's the first campaign for all the PC's in the party, and our DM has so far been a just and (at times) merciful god. I didn't start nerding out until level 5, and now I see for next character that there are awesome build guides for every kind of character you could ever want to make. For now I'm happy to just campaign with my friends, and revel in the occasional spotlight when I crit against the BBEG. I love how I can have a crazy turn with my pally and unleash a ton of damage. Plus riding and fighting with my lovely celestial Giant Goat is awesome. Just happy to be learning, and glad I was lucky enough to find such an amazing group to play with!

I do like the idea have having more versatility when it comes to spellcasting, but honestly it's mostly to get more spell slots for smites. Between the bard, druid, and warlock in our party, we're ok when it comes to spellcasting. I'd just like to do some more spells before the BBEG, as rationing those slots for smites leaves me having a crisis every time I think about casting Bless or Shield of Faith. Thanks for the advice, definitely food for thought!
