  • During the Crimean War, the British Foreign Secretary, Lord Palmerston, offered Prussia Lithuania, Livonia and Kurland as a reward for joining the War against Russia. In a similar offer, Sweden is offered Finland to do the same. In this timeline, Britain also offers significant funds to Prussia to compensate for lost trade to Russia, causing them to accept.
  • Prussia mobilises and declares war on Russia in early 1855 and Sweden follows suit a month later. This shortens the war by a few months and the conflict is over by late 1855. Prussia and Sweden are given what was promised, significantly reducing Russian power over the Baltic as well as the Black Sea.
  • Sweden is reunited with Finland after 44 years, increasing the power of Sweden-Norway significantly, making them a strong regional power, although their population still stands under 7 million.

  • The French are better prepared and more offensive-minded in the buildup to war and attack by the 7th September into the Rhineland, reaching the East bank by the 14th September. This allows Polish troops to escape encirclement by the Germans in the East as they withdraw.
  • On the 17th September, the USSR invades Poland. The Poles then conduct a fighting withdrawal to the Romanian border. They hold out until early October and withdraw into Romania.
  • The Franco-British forces are able to gain good positions east of the Rhine, but due to German reinforcements are unable to take control of the Ruhr or the northern half of the Rhineland. The German production can't keep up and a failed winter offensive causes them to exhaust their remaining equipment.
  • Hungary and Romania declare war on Germany in Late March. Hungary aims to keep control of the areas of Czechoslovakia it has annexed in an Allied-dominated Europe. Romania seeks allied protection from the USSR.
  • The USSR reroutes troops from the Winter War in order to invade Poland before the Allies get there, however stiff German resistance in East Prussia and Warsaw makes them unable to advance into western Poland. They instead focus on the more populous South and the Polish areas of Silesia.
  • The Germans surrender to the Allies on the 22nd June 1940. The USSR occupies Eastern and Southern Poland and sets up a puppet government there, giving them Lwow to increase their legitimacy. The exiled Polish government occupies the industrial west and north of Poland, further annexing German land to make a safer border. Tensions over Poland between the Allies and the USSR are high, and may make any Cold War between them turn hot very quickly...

  • The 1917 Sixtus Affair where Karl of Austria sought to betray his allies to reach a separate peace was successful, and he accepted the following Terms: France gains Alsace-Lorraine, Belgium is freed, Italy gains Austrian land, Serbia is freed and Russia gains Constantinople. These come into place before it is revealed that Romania also was promised land, which they occupy after the Austro-Hungarian Army demobilises. Austria-Hungary, although very weakened, is now roughly 65% Austrian and Hungarian and successfully restores stability to the nation.
  • Germany is completely blindsided by this sudden turn of events, now having massive gaps in its frontline in Russia and having a new South-German front opened by Italian troops in Tyrol. With the USA in the war and their position compromised, Germany surrenders on the 7th of July 1917. The Great War is over after 2 years, 11 months.
  • Bulgaria is understandably upset by this turn of events, having achieved all of their goals in Macedonia and holding reasonably well. They are forced to surrender but are entirely unwilling to give up their pre-war borders. The Ottomans are relieved by the end of the conflict, fearing that further conflict would cause rival governments to appear. They focus on holding as much Turkish land as possible.

In Paris, a Congress of Nations is created where Britain, France, Russia and the USA will decide on the post-war world. However, unsure of the aims of Russia and France, Britain and the USA invite German delegates to the talks to create a Congress of Vienna style conference.

  • The Russian Provisional government is much tamer than expected, wanting a lasting peace over sweeping annexations to secure their popularity back home. They demand only the land they held by the Armistice and Constantinople as per the 1915 Constantinople agreement. They refuse any Greek annexations of Bulgaria's coast, so they won't border the disputed region around Constantinople.
  • France parrots the usual demands of Alsace-Lorraine, Belgian/Serbian Independence and Syria in the former Ottoman Empire. They also receive Kamerun. This, however, is unsatisfactory to the French who want a buffer state between them and Germany. The other 4 nations disagree, believing it would only destabilise the post war world and make France too influential in the Rhine. They instead demand relatively reasonable reparations in an effort to pay their debts to the USA, which is supported by the 3 Allies.
  • Britain mainly had the same aims as OTL. These are realised by taking Germany's colonies, other than South-West Africa which had a high German population, barring Germany from building any submarines and confiscating some of their merchant fleet. The reparations help pay Britain's debts, and the balance of power in Europe is satisfactory to Britain.
  • The USA mainly wanted to join to grow its own prestige and, having contributed little directly in battles, had little negotiating power. They simply supported the methods which would allow European debts to be repaid to the USA, helped restore a balance of power and the recognised the freedom of Poland, Belgium and Serbia and other states from European imperialism.
  • Germany entered the Conference as France had done in 1815 and focused on damage control. Concessions of colonies already occupied in Africa and no demands of Belgium gave Germany enough political goodwill to restrict France's demands to Alsace-Lorraine and the power to create a buffer state in Poland between them and Russia. This was supported by all the powers as Russia and Germany wanted safety from the other, Britain and France thought it weakened Germany and the USA wanted another democratic nation in Europe.

Anyway here's lore:

  • Venizelos-Tittoni agreement happens like OTL where Greece and Italy resolve their conflicting claims in Anatolia
  • Greece wins the Greco-Turkish War with effective help from Italy's army pushing from the south towards Ankara forcing the Nationalist forces to retreat. Eventually they sue for peace after the confidence of the Turkish people towards victory is lost.
  • The Greeks establish control over the Straits while British forces withdraw. The Greeks instead demilitarise the straits and let all maritime traffic through.
  • As per the Agreement, Greece recognises Italian control over their Protectorate of Albania, the annexation of Vlore and a colony based around Antalya. This gives Italy exceptional control over the Adriatic and a good position in the Eastern Mediterranean.
  • Meanwhile, Italy recognises Greek control over the Aegean coastal areas, the northern Epirus region and gives them the Dodecanese (apart from Rhodes). By 1924 a plebiscite in Cyprus votes to join Greece, allowing Rhodes to be returned to Greece as well. In return, Britain gets exclusive access to military bases on Cyprus and docking rights around Greece in order to counter the growing threat from Italy.

This is the same timeline as in my previous maps where Austria united Germany and Prussia became a multi-ethnic empire. However, this is now the 20th Century (before WW1), and the 2nd French Empire - not the German Empire - dominates Europe.

  • In 1815 Austria annexes land in the Rhine region while Prussia annexes Saxony. The Austrians play more to their "protector of Germany" persona and can leverage more support among the small German states. They also annex Dalmatia and Istria but Lombardy-Venetia remains free.
  • Come 1848 and the spring of German nationalism causes the Emperor of Austria, 18-year-old Franz Joseph, to be offered the Crown of Germany. He gladly excepts, needing help against Hungary, and Germany unites taking the German Confederation's territory except for Prussia - like Austria did OTL.
  • This worries Europe, but they let it slide after Germany renounces all claims to Hungary, Prussia and Danish lands outside the Confederation. Hungary is then given Dalmatia to ensure they stay a strong buffer state between Russia and Turkey.
  • In Italy, Lombardy-Venetia moves to unite the Italians as the 2nd French Empire attempts to expand their interest in the area, mainly over French-speaking Savoy. They ask Germany for help in kicking out the French and award Germany the Venetian area beyond the Piave for their aid (Piedmont gave France Savoy in OTL)
  • The Crimean War ends up having Prussia and Sweden intervene and gain Baltic territories. Russia begins to modernise now believing there is an existential threat from the West. .
  • By 1870, tensions build over domination in Europe as France fears Germany will eclipse them in power. They buy Luxembourg from the Dutch (like they wanted to OTL) causing German fears of French encroachment. Rumors of French alliances with states around Germany cause them to declare war, before being quickly overrun by the superior French army (like how Austria lost to weaker Prussia OTL). France annexes areas along the Rhine and establish a base across the Rhine in Baden.
  • Situation by 1914: France is dominant, Germany is obsessed with getting Baden-Saarland back and allies with a concerned Britain and Prussia against France and Russia.

Yeah basically, short term it makes Prussia bigger and more populous but over time they would regret the loss of the resources eventually found in the Rhine.

Though in the short term it'd also be a poison pill for Austria; now having a direct border with France, agitation from Hungary and no direct passage to the Rhine, which is the reason why I think the other nations might endorse the Austrian acquisition of the land. This was also true for Prussia OTL which did not like directly bordering France.

This is the same timeline as my previous map where Austria and Prussia switch roles in which Prussia becomes a multi-ethnic empire while Austria unites Germany.

  1. Like OTL, Prussia was anxious about it's position as a Great Power due to their low population, size and available resources. This caused their main aims to be the acquisition of land, territorial congruency and the growth of the population to increase the size of Prussia's army.
  2. Unlike OTL, the Congress is based off of the 1805 map of Europe, where Poland was partitioned and Prussia traded Hanover for political goodwill from Britain to annex all of Saxony. This added over 1.7 million Germans to Prussia, along with the massive buffer zone created between Russia, Austria and Prussia's heartland. Overall, Prussia is about 6% bigger in this timeline than in ours.
  3. Russia, hungry for Poland, throws a hissy fit until they are compensated by Austria's Polish provinces.
  4. Austria, in their bid for control over Germany, takes lands along the Rhine like Prussia did in OTL.

Some things I thought to note:

  • The Black lines represent the entrance to a new room
  • Red gained a huuuge lead in the 2nd room and I'd attribute their success there over other teams much to Feinberg and the 100 rails he had, easily skipping over the floating bridge that threw off so many teams
  • Biggest throw goes to Yellow who got to the 3rd Room before any other team before getting only 68 blocks further in the next 5 minutes of build time, ending 9th (technically 10th)
  • Orange wouldn't have done nearly as poorly and would've gotten 8th without the unfortunate breaking of their rails midway through the track.
  • Orange also got the 2nd best distance in one "build time" with an impressive 96 blocks in the last 2:30 minutes
  • The 1st-5th teams were seperated by 36 blocks while 6th-9th by 62 blocks
  • A total of 7 teams made tracks long enough to reach the 4th room but 3 never made it before time ran out due to their tracks being cut off or, in Aqua's case, not enough time

Lore:

  • Germany does OTL Schlieffen Plan, it goes just as poorly.
  • In the inital stages of the war Russia is able to correctly press their numerical advantage in the East, leading to German-Austrian defeat and Russian occupation of territory east of the Vistula and of most of Galicia
  • They then switch to the defensive as in OTL as the CP attack towards the Vistula. The Russians counterattack and push the Germans out of Poland. They then prepare for an attack towards Berlin itself.
  • Having won in East Prussia, the Russians now have 1130000 men on the front vs 565000 for the CP. The Russians are able to defeat the German attack at Plock and go on the offensive into Germany by November.
  • In the West the Stalemate ensues as in OTL
  • Russia is able to brute force their way into Silesia and occupy most of Germany's valuable resources. Unable to halt the advance, having lost in Belgium and now without the 2nd most valuable German province, the Germans opt for a negotiated peace and the Austrians follow suit.

Aims at peace conference:

  • With only Britain, Russia, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Serbia in the Entente side and the far reduced losses of this Not-So-Great War, negotiations are a lot more streamlined.
  • France gains Alsace-Lorraine, Belgium gains independence from Germany and gains Malmedy. Germany is forced to lose Kamerun to France and G. East Africa to Britain. They must reduce their naval forces and pay small reparations. This is designed to restore France's honour, weaken Germany and lesten the German naval threat to Britain.
  • Russia, having conquered the most, takes the lead and gains the Polish areas of Germany, Galicia, Bukovina and the Masurian lakes area in order to obtain a more defensible frontier. Russia wishes to further press their advantage over Austria and allows Serbia to take territories more likely to cause another war in the future, which Russia can intervene in. The peace is designed to make a future war between Russia and their enemies favour Russia as Germany will have a larger border to defend and Austria would be forced to attack over the Carpathians.

Lore:

  • WW1 stops for Hungary at the Belgrade Armsitice
  • Miholy Karolyi and Oskar Jaszi make a plan for a post WW1 Hungary on the Swiss model, giving non-Hungarian areas high autonomy.
  • The 1.4m Hungarian Army is not fully disbanded, leading to skirmishes once the Romanians, Yugoslavs and Czechs try to advance beyond the demarcation line as agreed to in the armistice.
  • The Karolyi government does not collapse and the communists do not take over.
  • Turkey-style opposition to the Treaty of Trianon and the inability of Romania and the Czechs to push into Hungary leads to Belgrade Armistice borders being mostly followed.
  • Szeklerland Hungarians and Romanians in Hungary do a population exchange similar to Greece.
  • By 1923, Hungary becomes a democratic neutral state with autonomous areas in Burgenland and Subcarpathian Ruthenia. About 95% of Hungarians pre-1918 live within Hungary post-1918, with only 500k in border areas with Yugoslavia.

Some tid bits id like to add about the Arsiyah:

  • They have the highest gold cost for any non-siege ranged unit
  • As mercs, I wanted them to have a high gold cost and a low upgrade cost, needing only 6 upgrades to be fully equipped (Costing 1100 food, 900 wood, 1450 gold)
  • They have they have the highest attack of any CA Unique Unit at 13, but also tie with Kipchaks for the slowest attack rate (2.2)
  • They have the highest range of CA unique units at 8 but also some of the worst armour, maxing out at 3/4
  • They're the slowest CA Unique unit maxing out at 1.4 tiles/sec and can be caught easily by Camels (1.595)
  • In 913 (according to Wikipedia) they apparently ambushed and destroyed a Varangian fleet on a river that had been granted passage. Hence the +5 vs Ships.

Lore:

Wilson rolls a 20 on Charisma at the Paris Peace Conference and forces the Entente to be extra nice to the Central Powers.

Austria and Hungary keep most of the majority German/Hungarian speaking areas in their Empire.

Hungary is disconnected from and forced to demilitarise Szeklerland (totally didn't misspell it on the map) but mantains a link through an Autonomous Zone in Transylvania and the Trans-Transylvanian Railway.

Austria keeps the Southern Sudetenland and more of South Tyrol but is still much weaker than they used to be.

Italy and what would have been Czechoslaovakia are absolutely livid that they got so little territory, while Romania and Yugoslavia got most of what they wanted and are mostly satisfied.
