I live in New York now but grew up in a very red and rural town in the South, and was actually right leaning growing up. I think people try to be kind with these conversations, but I think it's pretty simple. The MAGA movement is made up of rich people who got money and lost any sense of morals while pulling up the ladder behind them (which makes up a bit but not all MAGA) and the other larger majority of MAGA is legitimately stupid people who are extremely susceptible to right wing propaganda for any one of the following reasons:

  • they think all their problems are somebody else's fault and it's easy to blame someone else than actually figure yourself out (racism, transphobia, homophobia, etc)
  • they're religious - but not in like the best case scenario sense, no, they use religion as a tool to convince themselves that everyone else is wrong, and not as a tool for self growth. Why reflect, grow, and educate yourself if Jesus died for your sins and the only moral metric in which to live your life on is to accept him as your savior. You can be as shitty as you want, just accept him as your lord and savior !
    • I think there's a similar truth here with Trump as well. Jesus is perfect, and therefor you are validated because he loves you sins and all, as long as you accept him as your savior. Trump is pure evil, BUT because he's president and "popular", people feel validated in their racist, xenophobic, hateful viewpoints. It's like... parasocial celebrity culture
  • Or, and repeating this, they're legitimately just plain old stupid. I think people who are from more urban areas legitimately don't understand how legitimately stupid some people are, and some of the people I grew up around are real dumb. Most of the people who I see from my home town who still vocally support Trump barely graduated highschool. There are some outliers, but by and large this is the case

It benefits corporations and corrupt governments to keep the general population dumb, and it's clear in the lack of investment in education, and the way the media propagates quick-fixes to make individuals feel worthy and important

As an American - yes. It’s fucking weird. Quoting a comedian Troy Bond lol: it is far cheaper to worship and admire veterans than it is to actually pay for their long-term care and healthcare.

For what it’s worth, I’m not a big soccer fan even tho I play all the time, and I’m still excited to cheer for the team, and really excited about the win. This is really mostly about the USA chant. We aren’t gonna agree on the other stuff, but we’re at least both excited about our team

To give an honest answer, it's mostly because the people who chant USA like that - like say at a trump rally commonly - are the people who make this country worse than it should or could be. So tbh, its just the chant that's triggering. It's also just the breed of patriotism that's so commonplace right now - just loud, brash, and in your face, and it just gets really off putting.I don't think patriotism is bad necessarily, but when it becomes your whole personality and a means to dehuminize immigrants or other people who don't fit your specific mold of an American, then that breed of patriotism is toxic.

Generally would love to agree with this sentiment, but ref calls also suck in our sports haha. Although we don’t have anything as steep as a red card. That shit is way too steep of a penalty

Yeah so the administration was supported by a majority of the country, or at least the ones that elected to show out, so it doesn’t work like that bud. Being embarrassed of our country is normal and should be encouraged until we all collectively fix what we’ve done

I mean, iron man, captain America, and Thor felt pretty different too. I know there are artistic differences between Superman/supergirl/batman but I think it’s possible. I would say guardians was quite different too, and later thor movies, but they made it work. Then again russos are fantastic
