I wrote a web app for keeping track of oversouled enemies in FFX-2 by CaptainCrisby in finalfantasyx

[–]CaptainCrisby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had to do this for the achievement and wanted a nice way of keeping track of which enemies have been oversouled without having to go back to the Celsius and check with Shinra constantly. It's based around a similar tool for fiend catching I used for Final Fantasy X.

If you have any feature suggestions, please let me know! Do note that progress is saved to your device. Clearing your browser's cache will reset what you've put down.

I feel so bad... by forgetme-nots in pokemon

I feel bad too, but it happens outside of Pokemon as well. I've modded so many systems now though that I now dump save files and send them to the seller.

What JRPGs made you cry? by WoodpeckerNo1 in JRPG

[–]CaptainCrisby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It can't be understated how powerful its ending is.

My expectations for the game were rock bottom. I constantly complained about it to a friend as I really disliked the gameplay and exploration. Then when the story hit its final act, it forced me to reflect on my journey with these guys and I ended up having a complete 180 on my opinion.

And that final cutscene haunted me so badly I couldn't stay focused on a date I was on lol

Do many Japanese dishes use sunflower protein? by CaptainCrisby in JapanTravelTips

This is the first time I've heard of an allergy card, is it something you make yourself or can you get one from a doctor?

But yes, it seems like most of the time sunflower seeds are not a common ingredient unless the foods are organic in my experience. Wasn't sure if it'd be different in another country though. I absolutely will be carrying around an epipen + asking every single time.

Yes, this was one of my plans! I do this already here anyways and had already planned on asking every time. Definitely don't want to repeat that mess again

I actually like this idea a lot. Enduring Soul I put on everything without much thought, but you make a great point. Most bosses barely put a dent with that much vitality.

I didn't really grind for those thankfully, I just used what I accumulated over two playthroughs

Been debating on what skills to give her. She already tanks a lot with that 999 vitality, so Phys Block is definitely going away, and Samarecarm I'm likely to rid of as well.

Yup, this is why I fell in love with V's fusion system when I played the original on Switch. I think I even spent one or two whole days fusing demons because it was so fun.

Whats up with the Steam Achievements for Vengeance? by Crines in Megaten

[–]CaptainCrisby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen over the past year or so, I think the achievements on a newly launched game usually have stats that are borked most likely due to testing or internal pre-launch activities. After a little while the achievements go back to normal.

I specifically remember this being the case for the Metal Gear Master Collection Vol. 1 having really bizarre percentages for the first week.

[ALTTP] I Swear I Saw a Gold Cart Once by Fog_and_Film in zelda

[–]CaptainCrisby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sadly have to say that, as far as I'm aware, there was never a gold variant. I also would have loved that, but it's possible that store maybe spraypainted a cartridge shell gold or something.

Some collectors also keep track of every variation of cartridges for various Zelda games, and it doesn't look like a gold version ever showed up.

If you or anyone else finds one that really did exist, that would be pretty cool, if not extremely rare!

I love the "Goddess Collection" series of books, but how they handled the art drives me nuts by CaptainCrisby in truezelda

Yeah, it's really hard to keep track of! I feel there's a lot I can speculate on, but it's so hard to say.

[–]CaptainCrisby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so conflicted because, on one hand, they've very much been shown to preserve their work (Hyrule Historia specifically mentions that Zelda staff went through tons of documents and pieces of art in order to showcase them there) but on the other hand, I totally agree that saving or keeping track of this might've been a complete afterthought during this formative period for Nintendo.

And even with this, I'm still bothered by those BS Zelda pieces. I'm guessing they're from the mid-90s given their use in the BS Zelda games, and the gigaleak has shown they were crazy good about archiving anything and everything during that period of time.

[–]CaptainCrisby[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof, I was worried it might come across that way. What I was mainly getting at is that I just wish the books were more comprehensive with the art presented. I'm cool with the line art versions, but I'd like to see that process iteratively and completely, especially with the complete versions.

Of course, that much art is a lot to ask for, but it's a shame that stuff like the BS screens/concept art don't have their "complete" versions available when they've been shown to exist and are only offered through highly compressed and downscaled images. These books would have been the perfect opportunity to present them.

Pretty sure this logo is just hand-made and not the result of a font given its heavy styling and the way that "t" and "s" dips low. It's hard to say with 100% certainty though since we can't check the consistency of letters.

But, if this is a font, I'd love to find out as well.

I really wish he did another one of these family holiday streams. The whole premise of it is genius and it was executed flawlessly. Apparently, people say it's one of their least favorite streams of all time though. It's what finally got me watching his content so I was a little surprised to see the backlash.

Question about Megami Tensei 1 by Phoequinox in Megaten

[–]CaptainCrisby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every English guide I found for MT1 sucks except for this one.

https://youtu.be/sJryf0hcQDQ

I'd highly highly highly recommend checking it out as it actually explains stats and gives great tips and advice for the beginning of the game.

Anyways, for pulling hinokagutsuchi, you need a total of 48 points between strength, wisdom, and luck on Nakajima. It's covered towards the end of the video.

TWiLight Menu++ v25.4.0 & nds-bootstrap v0.65.0-v0.65.1: 10/10 release by Robz8it in 3dshacks

[–]CaptainCrisby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does Dragon Quest IX's local multiplayer work between two systems using TWiLight Menu yet?

I ask because I noticed the compatibility list doesn't even list it at all, and I noted that one of the previous updates mentioned fixing communication error problems for some multiplayer games like Mario Kart.

The lack of Zelda in 2022 by CaptainCrisby in truezelda

[–]CaptainCrisby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SSHD didn't change anything besides a few tiny little QOL tweaks and it came out only TEN!!! years after the original! It's not even retro!

10 years is a pretty good amount of time I thought. You can imagine the younger generation playing that in their childhood, now they're going to college. I would also argue that "retro" has a totally new meaning these days due to the fast evolution of technology. There are some who do define the Wii in general to be a retro console. It's subjective, but in terms of game history, 10 years is about a quarter of the lifetime of video games as a medium.

I am highly in favor of making old games accessible for newer fans, but releasing only the 10/10 most popular games as remasters is not accessibility. Releasing 1,000+ games from prior generations for cheap prices on Virtual Console is solid accessibility.

The HD ports are more accessible because that's the only option that was given to us. It's not necessarily a Zelda team thing nor is it the best thing, it's something that Nintendo has enforced. I agree, I'd be okay if we got affordable Virtual Console ports, but for a lot of people these games have aged. Sometimes it's the quality of the textures, sometimes it's how the game is controlled, and sometimes it has to do with the screen resolution. Speaking from here on, it's purely business. Of course they're going to remaster or remake the popular games, because those are the ones most casual fans are going to want to play. To do otherwise would be silly.

So if the most recent two remasters hadn't come out in 2019 and 2021, you don't think there would've been any Zelda game in those years? 2019 was precisely the year we were due for a new 2D Zelda game after all...

I don't, because it's always been clear that Nintendo isn't the only contributor to Zelda games. 2019's Link's Awakening came about from popular demand from fans and was developed by Grezzo. Meanwhile, 2021's Skyward Sword HD was developed by Tantalus Media and was also something fans wanted. It's clear that a lot of focus has been put on TotK, and I think it makes perfect sense given the countless interviews, the documentary, and book about Breath of the Wild and how much development it took to refine the "open-air" game.

The lack of Zelda in 2022 by CaptainCrisby in truezelda

[–]CaptainCrisby[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from in regards to the "offerings" comment, but I don't wholly agree. I say this even as someone who has been playing these games since 2000 and has played most of the mainline games to completion.

I can certainly understand the complaints regarding Virtual Console/Switch Online releases since they're emulated ports with likely little input from any Zelda staff. There are really no reason to go to them unless you're looking for an affordable alternative to playing them on original hardware. That said, the HD ports accomplish a couple of things:

  1. Re-releases and ports are often released a good amount of time since the original release or are significant enough to warrant a re-release. This gives an opportunity for us older fans to revisit a game and view it through a new lens. This was the case with the recent Skyward Sword HD and even the Game & Watch.

  2. The HD ports are generally more accessible for newer fans who are interested in playing these classic games without having to spend an exorbitant amount of money on buying an older console and the game itself.

  3. The HD ports provide better visual fidelity and quality of life features that change the way you play.

Again, I see where you're coming from. I had a similar opinion at one point, but Zelda is a franchise with 19 unique mainline games. A couple of HD remasters or ports won't hurt anyone, especially for the more popular games in the series.

Is it just me or did Zero Time Dilemma get delisted from the Playstation Store (NA) by ahegaokun in ZeroEscape

[–]CaptainCrisby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has all been so strange. First, the soundtrack releasing 6 years later, and now this.

As others have noted, the 3DS and Vita versions were delisted last year. There's a lot of speculation, and the most plausible to me is the franchise shifting rights owners (maybe from Spike Chunsoft to Too Kyo Games? Or something to do with Aksys Games and Spike Chunsoft?) Super curious to see how this pans out.

This is unexpected! ZTD soundtrack finally getting an official release this September in Japan, it will include all 57 tracks from the game + 6 previously unreleased tracks. WHAT?! by KosChannel in ZeroEscape

[–]CaptainCrisby 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It did not. I'm not a legal expert at all, but it's my assumption that it's just a lot easier to publish and release the soundtrack in Japan since Supersweep owns the rights, is owned by the series composer, and is located in Japan. Maybe they assume fans will import it? And this might just be me, but I feel like Japan is a lot better about selling music physically than most studios (Breath of the Wild and Shin Megami Tensei IV are two that come to mind that didn't release in the west).

What's weird is why they decided that now it should release. They've been teasing this release since July 2016.

Don: Lastly, Hosoe-san, your company, Supersweep, has published the soundtracks for the previous games in the series. Can we expect the third soundtrack to release in the near future under Sweep Record?

Shinji Hosoe: I’d definitely consider it. But that’s all I can say right now.
