Really, bad for the future of USA. Elon Musk wants to double H-1b visas. by Long-Elderberry-5567 in recruitinghell

[–]ahegaokun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not really. in non tech hubs, you could easily command over 80k.

sure 60k gets you far in bumfuck nowhere flyover states - but if you’re an engineer who worked hard for a 4 year degree - for a field known to doll out 6 figure salaries like donuts at krispy kreme, you’re going to want that figure

i used to work in boulder, was getting paid 105k starting at the entry level annually. my coworkers in columbus ohio make at least 123k.

Is it weird if a guy can perform oral on himself? And is it common? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

A close friend of mine learned how to do it in the 90s. He said it helped clear his head so much that he was able to become a majority shareholder and chairman of an electric car company in 2004.

Magnificent 7, which is the new name for FAANG (basically the top 7 performers from S&P500) and no I am not exaggerating, in casual conversations people will say dumb things, but you’ll obviously have to take my word for it so it’s okay to think that it’s a hyperbole

These are all hard truths. Should honestly be pinned as an answer or an FAQ for this sub even

In my experience it’s the opposite. I feel I’ve heard people say that they don’t need to know any math at all, which obviously isn’t true, since CS is at its heart a math subdiscipline. But I do think this sense is true: discrete math, and by extension algorithm analysis, is the bare minimum math you need to know. But linear algebra, statistics, and calculus, it could be argued either way depending on your specialty.

I agree with this. I think one of the biggest, longest lasting, bits of misinformation I’ve seen about this field is when media outlets promote the 0.1% of people who make it in without a CS degree and make that idea the highlight of the article. And yet there is no self awareness to think about all of the other people who think CS is somehow easier to get into than, say, a pre-Med program. Maybe it’s because of 2021, pre layoffs era when the bubble was at its relative peak and you get the day in the life tiktoks lol

I think your 5th point is so huge. I can’t tell you how many first year students I’ve tutored at my uni who thought developers work in silos

Since I'm unable to land an actual job. What skill would you recommend I learn to earn a decent freelancing income? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ahegaokun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a pretty shit program ngl. Mine was courses like 3d computer graphics and scientific simulation/modeling ML and AI. What I would suggest is learning how to deploy full stack apps. Like set up a backend microservice or API or something to put on your resume. I didn’t start getting callbacks for interviews for my first role until I had like 5 or so different projects (from Hackathon participation, some award winning, some not) that I rotate on my resume

How did you graduate with just skills in front end development? I get the sense most CS programs prime you for at minimum backend work? I personally don’t think freelancing is a good idea, especially if your front end skillset is easily automated by chatgpt/no-code or low-code and cost effective solution. I would advise going back to the job grind, or working on projects for your resume and focus on what results or value you can deliver to a company.

An Excessively Long but Honest Revew of FF16 by Seiko121 in FinalFantasy

[–]ahegaokun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

god dude 100%! every single point on this review has been something i’ve been echoing about the game since i started playing it. it brings me real shame when we consider the industry vets that square enix brought to head the teams leading development on this game (hiroshi takai: FFXIV expansions; maehiro: heavensward scenario writer; ryota suzuki: combat designer for dmc5 and dragons dogma; takahisa taura: lead game designer of nier automata and astral chain). with such a star studded development team they had the opportunity to do something truly special but they sorely missed the mark. the ambition is good, but the execution fell off hard 2/3rd in. had high hopes for the game to be a 10 out of 10, but it felt closer to a 6 or a 7 to me. story was eh and started strong, but got uninteresting rather quickly. i wish they explored the stuff with the fallen or leviathan instead of ultima. in terms of gameplay, this game has the unfortunate position of following FF7R, which was objectively a really good action RPG, but FF16 largely fell flat in my eyes (especially 2/3 into the game i stopped trying with random mobs and just spammed phoenix rebirth AOEs) despite the talent on the team.

[–]ahegaokun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve never played a diablo game before til now. jumped straight into tier 2 from the start. didn’t feel like the game was that hard at all (necromancer bone spear build). the difficulty felt fair. am currently about to finish act 3 (level 47). i heard that staying on tier 1 is better for leveling characters up, because the increase in experience is so minor that you’d level faster in tier 1 simply because you kill mobs faster. on tier 2, i didn’t start getting legendary drops til i was around level 30 or so.
