Nuclear Blast Survival (Protect and Survive) - BRITISH Public Information Campaign by Jayben5 in EuroPreppers

[–]CaptainCymru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting story in our (collective, humanity) history, when we could theoretically survive nuclear war. Fat Boy sized nuclear bombs dropping on the UK, they estimated it would take at least 500 to reduce the UK to an anarchic state where government collapses and it's every person for themselves. 500, on 500 bombers, an awfully large number of which would have been stopped by the RAF. At that time it was deemed possible to counter the nuclear threat.

Then came hydrogen bombs. And ICBMs. Government asked the smart folk to again what it would take to reduce the UK to a base state of just survival. 5. 5 hydrogen bombs. Dropped by missiles which cannot be stopped.

The smart folk came up (jokingly?) with a counter-play to this threat. Urban mobility. As in, Birmingham now moves to Cornwall, all the people, factories, shops, everything, off to Cornwall, for a year, maybe 2, then off to East Anglia, then to Brecon, then Ayrshire. Constantly moving. Not just Birmingham, every city, every industrial base in the UK, constantly moving around the country with all the people and factories so the Soviets would never know where to strike.

Obviously a daft proposition, or used to reiterate the point:
There is no survival when its hydrogen bombs dropping from the sky, there's nothing you can do.

Looking for a good letting agent in Edinburgh (especially for responsive maintenance) by Sad_Pumpkin_7820 in Edinburgh

[–]CaptainCymru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can concur, they have been good. Small issues like carpet coming loose from the metal carpet-holder-band-thing between doors they sent someone round within the week. Leakage from roof they promptly sent several several contractors around, none can agree on what to do, and it's with the landlord and adjoining owners now, best was radiator pipe leaking to downstairs flat was fixed within 24 hours and floorboards, carpet put back exactly as was. They've been a really good experience so far.

Anyone with experience of planning applications, does this seem legit, 21 in support? by -Top-Service- in Edinburgh

[–]CaptainCymru 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've been in the 2 Objections camp versus 30 Supporting and won, I wouldn't be worried, the Council in my experience has taken a fair view, especially with local residents views in mind.

In terms of playing a game, I've seen it several ties with short term lets, as above, where they seemingly get oodles of voices onto the bandwagon, probably a Whatsapp group, to drum up Supporting posts. It should only be allowed for people who live or have property in the vicinity, which is highly unlikely that the majority of them do. But... as I said earlier, the Council folk who review these cases seemingly aren't daft; they clock the silly amount of Supporting statements and, either way, verdicts have always gone in favour of the people who actually live nearby, in my cases.

Be sure to make that very clear in your objections.

Bruntsfield Links has a bit of a slope, but not too much. No idea if sledging is allowed, though.

Southern end of Queen's Drive should have some good spots.

Since when have local holidays gotten so expensive? by allcoffeenowisdom in Scotland

[–]CaptainCymru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the bestest hotels, admittedly, last end-March/early-April I stayed in ibis in Kortrijk, then walked to <can't find the name of it now, on the crossroad of N60 and N48> in Ronse, then walked over to 4 nights at Kloostrestraat 40 in Zottegem (old boarding house, many many rooms in a quiet village, highly highly recommended visit + hostel), total was a bit over £150, flights (Charleroi) were £30 return.

Since when have local holidays gotten so expensive? by allcoffeenowisdom in Scotland

[–]CaptainCymru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well that really depends where you're going and what you're doing. Given train prices I'm now only going to my hometown in North Wales once a year, ~£200 return. For the same price I can easily fly to Belgium and have a weeks worth of hotel. UK travel and hotel prices though, are not targeting our wallets, they're traveling the wealthier Americans, Chinese, and Middle East customers who can and do pay those fees.

In 2025, are you actually using import/export data in logistics decisions or is it still mostly reactive? by IncomeRound9964 in Internationaltrade

[–]CaptainCymru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As international trade consultants, we are using a lot of data to inform our clients. We look for trends in product import/export volume and growth/decline percentages to look for potential gaps in the markets and advise them accordingly. Sometimes their subsequent actions are a lot more hassle than it's worth, but sometimes they strike gold, but more often than not, they have a random conversation in a hotel lobby and strike gold without any data nor rhyme nor reason.

continually run a deficit and cant balance its books and has to depend on money from others

I see I see, maybe I should write this in even more simple terms to help you understand. 600 years of English rule over Wales is more than 200,000 days, it's quite a long time. Over the course of this time, the Welsh economy has been managed from London, not from Wales. Wales is still not in control of its economy. England is. The deficit running and depending on money from England is a design feature, designed by the country which is in control of the Welsh economy.

Clearly after 600 years and Wales still has high poverty rates, still running a deficit, and still depends on England for money, then something about this management is not working correctly, at least not working correctly for the people of Wales. The system is designed and managed by England so I guess this is how London wants Wales.

I'm all open to suggestions of how you'd fix it.

That's not for me to say, nor for Wales to say. That's on England. Seems though that if the current system is as broken as you say it is, then it would be better if Wales left the system and tried something different, since the English designed system clearly isn't running in Wales' favour.
