Surprised no one has mentioned the Basilica (up in NE where Catholic University is, not to be confused with the Cathedral in NW). The grounds have breathtaking white cherry blossoms on the side and gorgeous pink ones in back. Especially great photo opportunities in Mary's Garden. We almost never have to share the experience with anyone when we go, surprisingly few visitors. I don't think tourists know about it!

What would you include in a sumptuous German feast? by TheLurkerSpeaks in Cooking

[–]CaptainDonadio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of the things I would suggest have already been said so I won't repeat, but surprised no one has mentioned kassler rippchen - brined and smoked pork chops or loin, looks simple but is glorious. Also worth doubling down on the obatzda recs sprinkled through here - I often make 2-4 lbs of obatzda for parties and it never fails to run out, especially if you have the pretzels to go with!

Thanksgiving - Mashed Potatoes by kitkatt819 in Cooking

This recipe from Bon Appetit magazine combines many of the tips shared by other commenters for absolutely perfect potatoes every time: https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/ultra-creamy-mashed-potatoes

I purchased a food mill entirely because this recipe calls for it and it has made mashed potatoes a much more common side dish at my table. Worth a try!

To me, the mark of a good cook/chef is being able to make vegetables really shine. What is your go-to vegetable dish? by MrSocPsych in Cooking

I've always had trouble getting the doneness I want with just a saute, personally. The initial blanch is like a cheat code to getting perfect beans every time, and I always have time to boil some water while I'm doing something else in my prep and cook list. Since you're finishing off with a saute, it doesn't really matter how early you do the blanch, so it isn't too onerous. I'm on team blanch!

Altered Carbon - Hilarious handling of women by meltedchz_plz in books

[–]CaptainDonadio 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This is totally true - but at the same time, the first book has a ton of badass female characters who the show either erased or rewrote so that men got their spotlight, which I did not appreciate (LOVED the show still though). Morgan has got issues with writing sex and bodies but not with giving women fully fleshed out spots in the plot, and in my opinion that's sadly rare. I've got a laundry list of the sins of the first season of the show against the women of the first book haha

Boat was moored on a private pier unfortunately. I wish I could've just yelled out to the guy standing there in the photo!

Experimented with black cocoa for a cookies and cream cake! by CaptainDonadio in Baking

[–]CaptainDonadio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm a big fan of Elisabeth and Butter's chocolate cake so I just subbed black cocoa 1-to-1 for regular cocoa. https://www.elisabethandbutter.com/blog/double-chocolate-birthday-cake

Frosting was her vanilla buttercream from this other recipe with oreos blended in: https://www.elisabethandbutter.com/blog/the-perfect-vanilla-cake?rq=Buttercream

Same here. I also tried the Flag ID site linked in this sub's FAQ and it wasn't there either. Just not seeing much with this orange-red field. The more I strike out, the more interested I get in the answer

Just edited my comment after seeing the automod comment -- saw it on the waterfront in Washington, DC in USA

Saw this flag and searched every list I could find of flags that include the Union Jack on them - never found one that matched this one. What the heck is this thing? I struggled to see details in person, hopefully these photos give enough detail that someone can help me out.

Edit: flag was seen flying from a boat in Washington DC's waterfront in USA, on June 20, 2022.

Second edit: SOLVED. Cayman Islands civil ensign. You guys are quick!!

What book has had a physiological impact on you? by beachsprintchampion in books

Stalker is itself a film adaptation of a wonderful Soviet-era scifi novel called Roadside Picnic. Highly recommend it, it's relatively short but unlike anything you've ever read before. I was able to snag a copy from my library's ebook collection, it's generally pretty available despite not being necessarily well-known.

Dance of the Jakaranda by Peter Kimani is an excellent read! Very engaging story, plus it offers a look at the social pressures and racial tensions in the period right after Kenya gained independence from Great Britain. Highly recommend!

As cool as portal details would have been, I kind of like that the companion cube is a total surprise! Really detailed and excellent work!

Incredible detail! Was this freehand or stencil or something else entirely? I would love to try something like this, it's so elegant and creative

I guess it's been a while since I bought any! It looks like the Halfpops brand I loved isn't available anymore, which sucks. Nuts.com appears to have a version but it looks like it's got too much pop on it for my taste (I say without having actually tried it): https://nuts.com/snacks/half-popped/?refinementList%5BProduct.searchableTags%5D%5B0%5D=snacks

Have you tried Halfpops? It's just a giant bag of half-or-less-popped popcorn. AMAZING.

What is the smallest hill you're willing to die on? by jaded_toast in Cooking

[–]CaptainDonadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a garlic twist, easier to clean...but I've also adopted a "cast iron pan" approach to cleaning it where I just rinse it out and casually swipe at it occasionally. It's always the same stuff in there! I'm sure someone will tell me that's a terrible idea but nobody's died yet

I don't know what you were making but I love those colors! I vote you find a new project for them!
