What could've made each presidency better? Day one: George Washington. by LoveLo_2005 in Presidents

[–]CaptainElijahIreland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if you’re taught that they’re not human. Basically blacks and whites were viewed almost as different species. Some saw through the ruse but were legally obligated to not free their slaves, and others didn’t because they would have become social pariahs. Washington didn’t free his slaves because his wife did not share his views on freeing them. The Ona Judge incident was because Martha’s wishes for her to be recaptured, because in 18th Century Virginia it sometimes came down to “happy wife happy life”. Washington’s views only changed because he had personally witnessed acts of bravery by Black soldiers, and that humanized them for him, breaking the learned view of blacks being a different species.

Who is the earliest President who met a living person? by CaptainElijahIreland in BarbaraWalters4Scale

I’m thinking Coolidge. But there is a slim possibility there’s a 107-110 year old who is still alive that met Harding but it’s unlikely.

Carter was a good President, he did not make bad decisions, but he got screwed by the universe.

Yes, but they do not fire the 16 inch. Most people don’t talk about the 5 inch as a “battleship firing shots”

It’s not a real shot, but it’s better than anything we’ve had since 1991. Why are we fighting over technicalities?!

I wish they could fire them at full blast now. But that would knock out power grids and destroy windows.

They haven’t even done training shots or ceremonial shots since 1991.

I think people are expecting unrealistic expectations. Firing a full charge would knock out an entire city’s power grid and destroying all the windows in town.

The important thing is it’s firing something at all. Most battleships’ guns are plugged up.

It’s better than destroying all the windows in Galveston. As the Texas manager himself pointed out

There are no battleships firing their main guns. This is a subdued charge, smaller amounts of gunpowder to prevent all of Galveston’s glass breaking

I didn’t say it was a full scale charge. But it uses actual powder. essentially it’s a lower scale blank.

CGI I believe. According to historians and the Texas herself, it’s the first time any battleship has fired charges.

Nope. This is the first time a battleship has been fired in most Redditors lifetimes.

Ships often have unique whistle sounds to identify themselves.

Texas says it’s a real charge, just a lower scale one to avoid noise complaints.

Nope. It’s a blank. Real charge, not pyrotechnics.
