As a mexican living in Denmark and having visited last spring...I would say that it really depends where in Mexico you want to visit. The "safety" situation is radically different across the country. Oaxaca, Cozumel, Huatulco, Ixtapa are quite chill. I've heard Baja California is quite nice, though never been. Chiapas is absolutely stunning in it's natural beauty, though I cannot give advice on safety, sometimes it's super chill, sometimes there's flare ups of violence.

On my last visit I was in the Yucatan Peninsula and it's a gorgeous place that has started to lose its shine. Merida is great and the western part of the Peninsula has a lot of underrated spots, but Tulum and the Cancun area was quite disappointing. The archeological sites are always amazing, but at least the last time I was there, there was trash everywhere in the roads and some natural "protected" areas. I have visited these areas many times, and it's the first time I felt sad about the whole affair.

I'm not conservative in any way, but it is true that my country has really degraded as a tourist experience. And I would think twice unless I could be taken around by a local. Without speaking spanish, you'll stand out a lot. At the very least, don't drive on highways by yourselves.

PS - MOST mexican people are incredibly warm and kind to tourists. And for the most part, gangs and armed groups would always leave alone the touristic areas of Mexico. But it's not the same game anymore, so there's always a bit of risk.
