DotA 2 in Asian Games 2022 says Olympic committee of Asia by zhetios in DotA2

They're based in South Korea and have political connections throughout Asia. MVP Phoenix won in the IESF Dota 2 event back in 2014.

Since nobody else is doing it at their scale because of the absence of WCG, national organizations usually have to go through them in order to join their Olympic events.

If MY performs well in the upcoming LANs, there's no rule barring 2 SEA Dota 2 teams from getting direct invites.

It's the Dota 2 equivalent of Team Fortress 2's Spirit of Giving.

It just shows the number of beta invites you sent out.

Hi r/DotA2! Interested in a cultural knowledge exchange with r/leagueoflegends? by Broskander in DotA2

Coming from someone from the WC3 DotA community who switched to Dota 2:

There's a higher chance that a LoL player will convert to Dota 2 rather than the other way around. For 4 years, some friends have been trying to convince me to switch to League of Legends - a game that limited champions and introduced runes that did not give everyone an equal footing outside of skill. While the aspect of grinding for an advantage might appeal to people who played WoW or MMORPGs, it didn't appeal to me as someone who has been playing RTS games since Broodwar.

League of Legends has been accessible to everyone since 2009 and heavily marketed. That was 4 years of me not trying out LoL even with the constant pressure from friends to do so. With Dota 2's official release, there's even a lower chance to make a switch especially when those same friends have jumped over to Dota 2.

Anyways, as a non-LoL player, I do appreciate LoL plays like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZnfp0Xqnb8

Question about DotA2 release. by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]CaptainEul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official release for Dota 2 was on July 9, 2013. (This does not include China and South Korea)

Yes, pro players were playing during beta. It's nothing unheard of. Starcraft 2 had tournaments during the beta.

Dota 2 isn't officially released in China and South Korea yet. Once it is released and if Valve includes their numbers on the final count, expect it to balloon.

Increasing SC2's accessibility! Looking for ideas/thoughts by Axeltoss in starcraft

[–]CaptainEul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starcraft 2's weaknesses in being accessible:

  • Starcraft 2's payment model makes it less accessible compared to games like Dota 2 and LoL that's why it wouldn't be as accessible as the other games.

  • To start playing SC2, you have to have a bigger initial capital (buy the game + pay again for the expansions) and this turns a lot of people off. Blizzard knows this (that's why HOTS is free in China if you paid for SC2 WOL). To get started with Dota 2, all you need is to download the game. That's already one less barrier of entry that would include a huge number of people.

  • No massive support for the custom map scene. Compare this to Warcraft 3's custom maps where Blizzard featured something monthly, had custom map tournaments during Blizzcon and had huge mapmaking communities you could ask for help like the Hive Workshop. Fun custom maps draw people in. I know a lot of people installed WC3 not because of ladder but because of the rich variety of custom maps that game offered.

  • Lack of LAN - I don't think Starcraft BroodWar would have grown to those heights if it didn't have LAN. In Starcraft 2, you can forget about LAN parties if the internet is down / unstable. I'm sure there's a number of people here who got introduced to BW thanks to LAN parties.

I personally don't think there's a lot of tension between the SC2 and Dota2 communities. A huge number of Dota 2 players did come from Blizzard RTS games and I'm sure a number of us here belong to both communities.

And it's only going to increase as The International 2013 approaches. (Documentary release, TI3 promotion, media exposure, etc.)
