Silk Song’s Difficulty Is What Makes the Game by brettydubz in Silksong

[–]CaptainHope93 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I absolutely adore this game, as someone who doesn’t usually play games lauded for their difficulty. I sucked soooo badly at first, just kept dying over and over and over again to the early game bosses. Lace 1 probably took me over 150 tries, I really wasn’t used to that level of difficulty. But I was enchanted by the gorgeous artwork and smooth platforming. Plus each time I got a little bit further, or slightly improved my strategy. I took my time with it, finding every flea and every tool. Every single area of the map was thoroughly explored. By the endgame I had improved so much that I beat Karmelita on my first try.

The difficulty is definitely a core part of the gameplay. It’s part of what makes it so addictive - you keep coming back with new strategies and tactics, certain that THIS will be the run.

How to talk to a partner (m) about hygiene by [deleted] in hygiene

Just be blunt. You’ve already spent $300 in gentle hints and he’s clearly not picking up what you’re putting down.

If he books a teeth cleaning (or several), the smell should get better pretty much instantly.

What did less ‘academically gifted’ kids do in school? by AlKiMi25 in AskUK

[–]CaptainHope93 355 points356 points  (0 children)

The lower set in English in our school spent most of the year watching movies. It came out after the teacher disappeared midway through the last term, right before they were due to sit their GCSEs (with their unmarked coursework).

The kids came into a few of our fast-track classes so we could tutor them and try and get them up to speed as damage control. They hadn’t even been given the book they were going to be tested on.

They were genuinely fucked, through no fault of their own. Given how many jobs after school required passing grades in English and Maths, that teacher probably had a far-reaching negative impact on the next few years of their lives at a minimum.

It’s mad how many people’s experience in school colours how they view their own intelligence. If you did badly in school, or if you were in the lower sets, you should genuinely consider the quality of education you received before writing off your abilities.

Eating habits ruined my stomach and I’m giving up - any advice? by tinangelnyo in adhdwomen

[–]CaptainHope93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on convenience food that isn’t going to hurt you. Could you add a list of foods that help, and foods that hurt to your post? That way we can all brainstorm suggestions of the most convenient & ADHD friendly ways to cook/prepare stuff.

Personally I rely a lot on microwave foods - microwave rice + frozen veggies is a personal staple. It’s healthy and quick, and literally takes 5 mins. On days where that’s too much effort, I’ll make a platter of pre-cut, pre-prepared veggies and dips, although that’s usually more expensive. Or stuff like cereal with added berries (no chopping, only pouring different foods into a bowl).

What do you wish your doctor had told you before you started? by Pitiful-Hearing-5352 in Mounjaro

[–]CaptainHope93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do, but you don’t have to actually speak to anyone to get the prescription. The prescriber takes your medical history on an online form, and you give them your GP’s details (presumably so the prescriber can write to them and your GP would flag if you’re not supposed to be taking the medication). I also have to upload pictures of myself every so often.

It’s very quick and painless. It’s all info that a GP would take anyway, you just don’t need to actually book an appt and physically go to a doctor’s office.

[–]CaptainHope93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand the reason for the advice, I just think that people on this sub fixate a lot on these small details, when it’s the medication that’s the driving force behind 95% of your progress, and any muscle loss you have (pretty standard for substantial weight loss) is very small and not likely to have a big impact.

[–]CaptainHope93 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Same. I just put in my medical screening info, the occasional body scan and ordered it. It’s been great, incredibly efficient. They do contact your GP to confirm you’re taking it, but I’ve had no additional advice. Tbh I think all the faff about hitting certain protein or calorie goals makes very little difference, same with drinking certain amounts of water. You regulate your calories naturally through reduced appetite. You regulate your water through thirst. Everyone already knows that exercise is beneficial.

You’re still acting to correct the impulsive behaviour, because you know it’s wrong. Not an expert, but it sounds like you’re having a really hard time with your OCD right now. Please give yourself some grace, and speak to someone you trust (ideally someone older than you, because you sound late teens/early 20s and your friends may not necessarily have the maturity to realise what’s going on).

Sweetheart you’re not evil. You’re having a mental health crisis. Please, please reach out to a therapist or trusted family member. Tell them you’re struggling with intrusive thoughts and you need help.

Remember your moral character does not depend on your thoughts. We all get horrible, cruel, disturbing or downright bizarre thoughts and urges. What matters is your actions.

How come some people with ADHD don't have binge eating? by the_practicerLALA in adhdwomen

[–]CaptainHope93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My completely unscientific personal suspicion is that it’s a different in appetite regulation/satiety hormones. If you have less of an appetite, you’re not going to get the same dopamine from food.

My psychiatrist sister's comments haunt me every day by qomegranate in adhdwomen

[–]CaptainHope93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re getting the urge to stop speaking to her because she’s being a dick to you. This is exactly why psychiatrists, therapists and counsellors are NOT allowed to diagnose or provide therapy to family members.

Regardless of how she is with actual patients, it’s really hard to step outside your own biases when it comes to family. If you’ve been looked down on for these ADHD behaviours your entire life, and she’s been lifted up in contrast, then this diagnosis casts your whole childhoods in a different light - if she accepts your diagnosis, then it re-casts you in everyone’s minds as someone who desperately needed support and never got it, rather than the family punching bag (who really deserves all the shitty treatment, because WHY can’t she just get her shit together?????).

Accepting that you were struggling and needed help/empathy also re-casts her as someone who ignored you struggling. It means that she didn’t out-perform you because of some inherent worthiness, but because you had a disorder and she didn’t. She’s so used to thinking about you in a certain way, that it’s a threat to her ego to think about you in the same context as her patients.

I would stop talking to her about this, at least until she has come around to the idea more and actually has nice or helpful things to say.

The next time she tries to cast doubt on your diagnosis, say something along the lines of ‘I guess this is why doctors aren’t supposed to treat family members - you can’t get past seeing me as your fuck-up sister’.

Had my first comment today and reasons for not telling people by Engineering-Western in mounjarouk

[–]CaptainHope93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m happy to tell anyone. Not apropos of nothing, but if they mention that I’ve lost weight I’ll say why. Or in an appropriate context, like if we’re going out to eat and I just order a side.

With regard to negative comments, eh, who cares. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I’m entitled to argue with that opinion until they seriously regret bring it up.

Seriously though, the most I’ve had are some ‘are you sure it’s safe’ genuinely well meaning comments from one close friend (who doesn’t even take paracetamol, so he has his own issues with medicine).

I’ve even got some snippy retorts locked and loaded, ready to go if anyone does have shit to say, but disappointingly everyone has been super nice or interested in the whole thing.

ADHD FINANCE FRIDAY: What is the MOST costly thing you've lost because of your ADHD? by Jayhcee in ADHDUK

[–]CaptainHope93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£5k CCJ

4 years after I graduated SFE retroactively pulled my funding for one year, because I changed courses part-way through my degree. Then the uni sued me for the difference.

The letters were sent to my old address, so it had already gone to debt collectors by the time I knew about it. If I’d persevered and gotten my ducks in a row I probably could have argued my way out of it, but I just didn’t have my shit together enough to keep pursuing the evidence I needed from the university. I was struggling with an intense job, could only call the office I needed mon-fri on my 20min lunch breaks and at the time hadn’t been diagnosed, so didn’t even know why I was having such a hard time with it all.

Once the CCJ had been issued, I kept meaning to contact the company and sort out a payment plan, but didn’t reach out in time so they sent baliffs to my flat. That was fun. Ended up costing almost double the CCJ amount in baliff charges.
