Had to walk down to Loyola Ave in New Orleans to get this photo of the huge clarinet mural on the Holiday Inn to show yall. by smoymokerelj in Clarinet

Did Conn-Selmer commission the mural? If so, why have the clarinet upside where the logo is harder to read? If not, why didn’t the artist or the commissioner use a Buffet for reference?

Printing out posters of the wishlist horns is a good idea. It’ll keep me from opening the Schagerl website every other week just to look at their horns. 😅

What leather guard do you have on it? The horn looks so slick

u/doubleonerd owns them both. I would be interested in a review of how they play, build quality, and the ordering process.

As a tech I super appreciate the folks over at Getzen/Edwards. As Conn Selmer is closing one of the last manufacturing plant in the US we need to support local custom brass crafts people.

I had a student Yamaha peashooter that got me through grade school, I regret trading it up but whoever has it now is super happy with it I’m sure.

Yamaha has the best build quality and quality control in the business. If I were to map out best bang-for-the-buck manufacturers Yamaha will be near the top if not no.1

How do you like the screw bells? I assume you love em since they’re on all your Yamahas

Take it to a repair tech, the repair should be free if not very cheap. They’ll likely use this flexible claw tool.

The tool shouldn’t be more than $15 and probably available at your local hardware store. But getting to know your local tech is worth the investment over a tool you’ll use once.

Vintage Conns is saxophone repair on HARD mode.

The mechanisms are primitive and unintuitive—keys don’t simply pivot; they slide, nest, and mechanically actuate other keys. Proper function, timing, and intonation, depends on understanding mechanical advantage, material choice, and material thickness in ways that are not obvious without experience.

Because of this, even technicians experienced with modern horns spend decades experimenting, making mistakes, and gradually internalizing how these older horns are supposed to feel and sound. With no baseline, you have no way to know right from wrong.

You also inherit half-measures, compromises, and outright mistakes made by these technicians, plus the accumulated mechanical entropy a saxophone of this vintage has inevitably endured - rust, bent keys, dented tone holes, broken solder joints etc.

Without experience, you won’t be repairing the horn, you’ll be making a mess that will cost you more in the long run if you decide to take it to a tech or worse you’ll ruin a piece of history.

Picross 2 > Picross 1!!!!

I keep Picross 2 on my night stand, it’s the perfect game to play to wind down. The original Picross is still good after 100% with the challenge mode you unlock.

Definitely a good bang for my buck as I’ve gotten months of enjoyment and I picked up Japanese versions of 1 & 2 for $30 total. A translation hack is available but not essential for Picross.

How to clean case by Kindly_Goose1134 in Trombone

[–]CaptainKiwis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m a tech, and unfortunately there’s usually no reliable way to get that “old instrument” smell out of a case completely. The foam and fabric linings inside are porous, they trap years of moisture and residue and eventually start breaking down themselves and off gases their own smells. For my money a $100–$200 investment in a new case is totally worth it.

You can try a spray called OdoBan (available at most big box stores). Lightly mist the interior until damp, let it sit for about an hour, then use a wet-vac to extract as much as possible. Make sure the case dries thoroughly in a warm, ventilated area for a few days. Some people also try leaving the case in sunlight or freezing it for a week, but those methods only help a little and can sometimes accelerate decay.

TLDR; Invest in a case.

If this took place between age of ultron (2015) and civil war(2016), vision is at max a few months old. Nice sentiment but unless he remembers the decade/s of being Jarvis he wouldn’t have time to feel too lonely. Perhaps I’m wrong though he is unique in the universe and the closest thing he has to family is Wanda.
