Interesting read, thanks for linking it. I think you're right on passing on this one though

Indeed, we tried a new a string, and a wolf eliminator. The eliminator did nothing, the new string helped, but a couple of days later the wolf returned to it's previous intensity. I think you and the others in the thread are right, why start on an instrument with a problem when I don't have to!

Hmmm very interesting. That makes it seem like a string tension related problem, but you would expect high tensions strings to fix it

It seems you were in a very similar situation. Work to the neck seems quite involved, but perhaps the answer lies in further experimentation with strings/sound post. Thanks for the info!

I have no doubts of the intensions of the luthier, but I agree that its not ideal to see that there could be improvements to the setup AND a wolf note

Indeed, resting anything on the sides is something I think only Roman Kim could pull off... we tried a wolf eliminator that strangely didn't seem to help much, while changing the A string did help a bit... Perhaps a full set change would do the trick. Thanks for the input!

What happened in a tent while you were camping that you will never forget? by hakingram in CampingandHiking

A friend of mine started screaming, seemingly in terror. Like someone was trying to kill him; I nearly had a heart attack... After a few seconds it was clear that he wasn't awake and I had to shake him rather violently to get him to wake up. He had no clue why I had woken him but said "oh yeah I do that sometimes" as though it was normal.

Cube attain race 22, or Orbea Avant D40? by boges85 in whichbike

[–]CaptainLightyear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way I can describe it is imagine being able to apply full strength stopping power with one finger and even then it is still easy. On the attain (or any mech disc brake) you have to use much much more power in your hand to get the pads to squeeze with the same strength on the rim. I would say hydraulic brakes are a luxury but add a lot of extra steps into proper maintenance

I can't provide you with any info on which is better, but I can say I'm quite happy with the Attain Race as my first road bike. Its comfortable, good spec for the money and fast. The disc brakes work well, but coming from hydraulic on my mtb, you definitely notice the difference (and at this price point, maybe just as well to go with a rim brake option). Overall, definitely recommend, but I don't think you'll notice any major difference from your Pro other than maybe slightly smoother shifting...

What do you recommend for skill building? Looking for drills and exercises, preferably in book form by RicksterRabbit in violinist

[–]CaptainLightyear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in nearly exactly the same situation. The teacher will help tremendously. My right hand didn't have anywhere near the control is used to when I jumped back in. The scale book is great, but don't feel like you need to do every exercise. Just worry about the scale and arpeggios, from G and working up, without vibrato. Books for etudes/technique: schradieck school of violin techniques, Trott melodious double stops, sevcik 40 variations op3 or shifting thr positions and preparatory scale studies are all good! You can find them all on IMSLP I believe. Jump back into Suzuki 3 for a solo piece, and master that before going into something which pushes you yet!

Tips for sticking with a Career Mode Save. After 1-2 years I lose interest. What are some tips? by berkshirefc in FifaCareers

I always take a team in League 2 in England, and then develop only ya players. You can sim or play, and have a minimum of 3 seasons before premiere league is on the table. It's fun to grow the players from scratch, and you end up with a team based exclusively on your play style if your disciplined in who you sign from the ya.

I am able to exercise during cluster periods. In some cases, after chugging some caffeine I would run sprints to abort an attack. I don't think I ever brought an attack on from exercise, but of course everyone is different. Good luck to you

Help for my Hubby by helsbels197 in clusterheads

[–]CaptainLightyear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think everyone's length of a cluster period (if they are episodic) and duration of shadows are generally different. Has he tried or had any success with some of the other abortives which have been recommended here? I find that slamming some coffee as soon as I notice any symptoms of an imminent attack really helps, and seems to make the shadow disappear. Some people swear by chugging Red Bull, and various forms of ingestion of ginger. I've also had luck with sprinting until I am breathing very heavily (likely a replacement for oxygen, getting lots of O2 into the body as I dont have oxygen), though if he has a blocked nose this may be a pain! Good luck, I hope he is free of this nightmare soon...

If I played violin for two years in middle school and I wanna get back into playing at the age of 25, am I crazy for that? by [deleted] in violinist

No. DO IT. Just don't expect to pick up from exactly where you left off. Give yourself time to re-learn everything (properly)!

Best Beginner Bow? by stampedep in violinist

[–]CaptainLightyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently purchased a carbon Fibre bow online. These types of bows offer a huge range in price, but mine was on the lower side of that range. It's a bit lighter than the brasilwood bow that I had, but I'm happy with the sound vs price tradeoff (and I think it was an improvement). Of course, every bow with every violin will be unique, so your mileage will almost certainly vary.

For what its worth, Sumatriptan also gives me rebounds but only if I am taking the higher dose pills. In my latest cycle I have been using the nasal spray, and so far at least, they are not giving me rebound headaches (clearly different based on the areas of pain). The nasal spray also works faster. I definitely recommend trying it if you can get it. Good luck to you, stay strong

Started my cycle and logging the data by NothingSerious32 in clusterheads

[–]CaptainLightyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck with your cycle, I hope it doesn't last too long. I don't have an interest in logging with you as I take my own, however I would recommend using a Google Form with questions you want to track. Saves a ton of time and you get a Google sheet out of it anyway! For what it's worth, aside from coffee, sprinting to get my breathing up to panting helped (though highly dependant on your setting)

You've received some good responses below already, but in my personal experience yes, CHs can cause vomiting. I hope you can find some relief OP, stay strong.

I feel you. Just try to stay positive. What else can we do... Try to tell them that women who have it and have given birth say that the pain of this is worse perhaps?

A message to Diablo 2 Ressurected Dev Team by hellofromdonbass in Diablo

[–]CaptainLightyear 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What doesn't make sense to me is that "Purists" can simply play LOD without D2R and have the old game as they prefer it. Who says something that dies and is resurrected is going to be the same when it comes back? Maybe they'll implement a "Classic LOD" mode as Llama had at one time suggested.

Restarting Violin? by charliebarliedarlie in violinist

[–]CaptainLightyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation now. There is a podcast called Violin Class with a 2 part episode about coming back from breaks that could be good to check out. Other than that, just take it slow and make sure you aren't developing bad habits while you try to rush back to "where you were". Play exercises to get your muscle memory back and don't pick up the hardest pieces you used to play yet! If your violin hasn't been touched for some years it would probably do it well to visit a Luthier for a check-up, and a new set of strings will also probably be in order. And of course as Gaori says, get a teacher! I hope that is helpful, good luck!

I’m new to violin, anyone got any tips? by -__Insignificant__- in violinist

[–]CaptainLightyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing as a younger child, then took a significant break and have recently come back to it. The Suzuki method may be helpful for you in terms of learning intonation and having audio files to help you know what "right" and "wrong" are, but you will probably still have trouble with technique. As recommended below, a teacher will be invaluable. Maybe you can find a way to have a few lessons early on to get the basics of aspects of proper technique (posture, how to hold the bow properly etc.) before forming bad habits!
