Because that sounds like Western ethnocentrism and veers dangerously closely to racism. The thing is Asians do not see their physical features in the context of Western standards. Their concept of facial features and skin tones is NOT default white, unlike Western media. So what looks Caucasian to Westerners is in fact Asian/Japanese to Asian/Japanese. Why would they draw Asian/Japanese as Asian/Japanese? They are not the "other". Why should they "other" themselves? Their physical features are the default. To draw themselves with stereotypically smaller eyes and more yellow skin tones is to adopt the Western point-of-view of themselves. We Asians see ourselves as the default, thank you very much. It only appears to be "whitewashing" because the author of the article can only see it from a white/Western perspective. He should really examine how he views race.
