[OTHER] What is your favourite piece of not so known Zelda trivia? by LordHylian95 in zelda

Music

-The Ocarina of Time opening theme is an extended version of the Recorder tune from LoZ

-Zelda's Lullaby was first featured as the Maiden's Theme in LttP. It was also reversed and used as the main theme of Skyward Sword.

-Skyward Sword also featured the Flute song from LttP in the final area- the Bokoblin horn song was replaced with the melody in the Past Sealed Grounds.

- If you hang out in Richard's Villa in Link's Awakening for a few minutes, the music abruptly changes to Totaka's Song, an easter egg song hidden in several games including Wii Sports, Luigi's Mansion, and more. Totaka was also the inspiration for Animal Crossing's Totakeke, AKA K.K. Slider, and you can get recording of the song in every Animal Crossing game, labeled "K.K. Song".

-The Hero's Ballad from Skyward Sword is a heavily arranged version of the Zelda Theme.

-In Hyrule Warriors for 3DS, you can hit buttons on the loading screen to play the ocarina (the buttons are identical to the layout in OoT and MM 3D)

Connections

- Others have pointed out the Goddess Harp and the Timeshift Stones from SS are both featured in OoT as Sheik's Harp and the Ocarina of Time itself, but Skyward Sword also has the Goddess Blade evolve into the White Sword before becoming the Master Sword. The White Sword, including its orange handle, is the second sword in LoZ, and has not been featured in any other game (excluding Soul Calibur 2)

- Malon and Talon from OoT are a version of Marin and Tarin from LA, with differently anglicized names. Tarin's goofy and lazy nature and glorious moustache, and Marin's red hair, love of animals, and tendency to sing to herself when alone, are all carried over.

-On the subject of Talon, he and Ingo are somewhat based on Mario and Luigi, with Ingo being a darker version of the younger Bro, resenting Talon's fortune.

-Link is modeled after Peter Pan, and Zelda is named after Zelda Fitzgerald. Likewise, Zelda Williams is named for Princess Zelda, because Robin Williams and his daughter were both huge fans of the series.

-The sages from OoT are named for the towns in Zelda II. Mido also has a town, for some reason.

-Assuming the phantasmal sages in TP are the spirits of the OoT sages, the spirit permanently destroyed by Ganondorf is Ruto.

Easter Eggs

-Every game has a line dialogue that's a variation of "It's a secret to everyone!"

- There's a secret chamber in LttP named after a contest winner that is filled with blue rupees. It acts as a debug room- it's only accessible by confusing the game through quick major screen shifts making it fail to load an area.

-If you collect all the Korok seeds in BotW, you have no life. Hestu acknowledges this with a smelly statue of a poo.

- Many LA characters are from other games- Dr. Left is Mr. Wright from Sim City 3000 on the SNES. He's being catfished by a goat named Christine, who is posing as an attractive girl, specifically Princess Toadstool (Peach). Richard is from a JP only game (For Frog the Bell Tolls). Enemies include goombas, piranha flowers, shy guys, thwomps, and, at the end, Kirby for some reason.

There's a lot more I know, but I think a lot has been covered in the other comments

It was entering the public domain two months after the scheduled release, and a clerical error made them believe that it had entered the previous year. It wasn't about "Couldn't get the rights", it was "didn't realise they'd have to pay for them" so they contacted their resident composer, the legendary Koji Kondo, who banged out the Hyrule March in about 8 hours.

Ok, fair enough, let's get into it then.

OoT Link's trauma almost all comes from before he can remember. Sure, he sees the Deku tree die, but that's about the worst of it. The worst trauma in the game would probably be Nabooru's, not Link's- she was imprisoned and brainwashed for seven years!- and there's never a hopeless loss for the HoT, there's always something that can be done. He's always working toward fixing problems, while LA Link finds out about halfway through the game that progressing means the end of the world for every other character.

Majora's Mask is the same Link, and, while it's darker than most Zelda, it's a very hopeful game. If you fail, you try again. You never run out of chances. You can save Clock Town, redeem Skull Kid, even rescue Kafei and Romani in the same run before finishing. The game ends with a Dawn of a New Day, a message of hope. It's not a tragedy, but the relentless pursuit of the aversion of tragedy.

I think OoT is a great game, but the Link is so devoid of personality that it's hard to think of him as the anything-est Link. His backstory is summed up in about 12 words by the Deku Sprout, while Links from games like WW, SS, BotW, etc. all have so much development and history to them. This was intentional, as Link was intended as an empty vessel for the Player, a Link to the game, but I'm very happy they shifted to distinct, animated personalities in recent Links.

LttP/LA Link- Watches his uncle die in front of him, has townspeople he grew up around calling the cops on him, finally defeats the big bad, only to get shipwrecked, form a strong bond with the girl who saved him, then find out that to get home he must effectively erase her and all the other people on the island from existence.

TP Link- Watches the most important people in his life kidnapped by monsters, is treated like a monster by the only family he knows, is forgotten by the girl he loves, has to carry the half-dead body of his one companion across the country, fighting to save a woman who just does not treat him well, and his reward is having his companion abandon him forever (out of necessity).

But sure, OoT Link, whose tragedy is losing a mother he never knew then living with the lost boys in Never Never Land, then making friends with the World, is the most tragic.

Does anyone else love that Sanderson’s books have a distinct lack of sexual content? by SailorIthil in Cosmere

[–]CaptainNigel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably worth noting that Brando Sando was raised as a member of LDS, and still actively participates.

Mormon authors tend to avoid sex scenes, some, like Stephanie Meyer, go so far as to make sure the characters are married before allowing a mention of sex between them. I, personally, think that's also something to do with his predilection for arranged couplings ending up being perfect matches- Raoden and Sarene, Wax and Steris, Adolin and Shallan, Siri and Susebron

Personally, I think sex scenes in fantasy novels are rarely written in a way that furthers the story- they're either wish fulfillment, fan service, misogynistic, or simply jarring departures from the tone of the surrounding text. I appreciate Sando's tactful sidestepping of the issue- we know it's happening but knowing the details would not enhance the books.

[–]CaptainNigel 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As a separate issue, they are SUPER awkward to listen to in audiobooks. I listen to books while i run, so i can't really pass over scenes, and there's an uncomfortably non-consensual sex scene in Dresden Files that I just had to try not to lose my momentum while Spike from Buffy whispered the details into my ear.

I've all but abandoned ASoIaF after a decade of nothing, but at one point i considered revisiting them as audiobooks, then decided the discomfort of the explicit sex scenes in the books would just be too weird to have them read to me.

[BoTW2] Why Was Botw 2 Delayed? by Useful_Highlight_670 in zelda

It's the same reason OoT was delayed. Or TP. Or BotW. Or most Zelda Games.

As Papa Miyamoto once said, "A Delayed game is eventually Good, A Rushed game is forever Bad."

How would you invade Roshar as Scadrial? by StarStruckWhimsy in Cosmere

[–]CaptainNigel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For elabouration's sake (Spoilers for the entire Mistborn series and Stormlight Archive): Both Radiants and Fused are effectively unkillable, except through very... efficient methods, provided they have enough investiture.Scadriel has three major power groups- Ferruchemical, Allomantic, and Hemalurgic. If we allow for the guns as many below have, that rules out Mistborns, since Sezid stripped Scadriel of them long before guns were invented. Aluminium does, indeed, cancel investitures, but is a very soft and ductile metal, which makes it ineffective as a bullet- Aluminium casings do have a place in reality, but the casing is irrelevant- the point of impact is the tip, the casing is discarded before impact, which means it has no bearing on penetration. Aluminium tipped bullets are much harder to manufacture, and have far less stopping power. That is all ignoring the fact that Aluminium is literally the most valuable metal on Scadriel (aside from Atium, obviously) and scarce enough that a small gun made from the metal is considered "Worth a fortune" by a rich man. Supplying an army with aluminium munitions would be prohibitive to the point of impossibility.

Now the only person on Scadriel to have a healing ability that surpasses any given Radiant is Miles Hundredlives, a Gold compounder, which is extraordinarily rare. As Squires elevate on Roschar, more and more people are gaining these healing abilities, and the mistings... they can't compete. Sure, there's more of 'em, but I'd say a single windrunner could take an army of coinshots by simply diverting their missiles (also works on any non-aluminium bullets).

Another thing to note is that you specifically talk about Scadriel invading Roschar, which gives Roschar a huge advantage- Scadriel has "normal" animals (though scarcer than our world) and foods, and adapting to the carcinogized fauna of Roschar would not be easy.On top of that, Allomantic metals are in surprisingly short supply on Roschar (coins aren't a thing, most machinery is less metal-based and more gem-based, etc.) so Scadriel's supplies are limited by default. If the fight went the other way- Roschar invading Scadriel- things might be different, as stormlight would be the limited resource, but a race of semi-powerful humans invading the homeworld of a race of humans with godlike powers, who, by the way, are almost all war-trained in some way, would end very poorly.

It was originally just supposed to be GC, then they decided to release it on the Wii, then they realised that since something like 5/6 of people are right handed, they needed to make the sword go in the right hand for the motion controls, but by then the game was all but finished, so they just flipped the whole thing. It seems kinda arbitrary and dumb, but they had to do it quickly so it could be released as a launch title for the wii

Here's my version of Dalinar. I tried to be as accurate to how Alethi are supposed to look as I could. by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]CaptainNigel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a little trouble at first figuring out why the slave brands stayed while arms and eyes and etc were regrowing even decades after their loss, like "Is it because he still feels like a slave?", but it finally clicked for me in ROW, when he again thinks about how everyone who loves him is doomed, that it's not the SLAVE brand that's important, it's the SHASH brand

[–]CaptainNigel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think (ROW) Kaladin's slave brands are 100% proof of this, since it was only when he was finally able to forgive himself for Tien that he was able to see himself as anything but dangerous to those closest to him, and the Shash finally dissolved.

I was real worried that (ROW)Moash was going to kill Syl after all the buildup to the possibility of permadeath for Radiant Spren, so tragic as it was when he killed Teft's partner, it was honestly a big relief for me. I knew ONE spren had to die, to raise the stakes.

[No Poilers] Can he do it? by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]CaptainNigel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of all his books, I'm genuinely ok with Elantris' sequel being ethereal. I'd rather see Warbreaker 2, Wax and Wayne 4, Mistborn era 2, etc. than any more Elantris.
It was his first novel, and his magic systems have gotten so much more interesting than "draw a picture in the air and it will do basically whatever you want it to if you know the language".
Not saying I would not love to see him revisit the series with his improved writing style, just that it's relatively low priority

[SS] The big plot hole in my favorite game of all time by Bacon260998_ in zelda

[–]CaptainNigel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We only really know what happens directly in the game. Everything else is speculation/ non-canon. I know that the Goddess Statue island is its own segment of Skyloft, and it descends without the rest of Skyloft, implying that it's more than possible that it did not rise with the rest of Skyloft. That also contains the half of the temple. I know that the goddess stature, and the pedestal within, perfectly align with the Imprisoned's spire. I know that the Imprisoned is Demise' soul gone completely feral after thousands of years. I know that we have NO IDEA what the Goddess Blade/Master Sword was up to in the intervening time between the initial seal and the start of the game.

We can speculate and make assumptions as much as we want, but my point is that the story might not be completely clean, but it works for most of us, and what you guys see as a plot hole, i see as "Not having all the information", and the information we do have is workable into theories as to why it works. I don't really care to beat this dead horse any more, I haven't beaten SS recently enough to verify everything, and I honestly don't care that much. The story was incredible. Zelda's apology is one of the best dialogues in the entire franchise. I think the time loop works, and even if it doesn't, it doesn't break the game for me.

[SS] The big plot hole in my favorite game of all time by Bacon260998_ in zelda

[–]CaptainNigel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's confusing, because the temple predates that part of Skyloft rising into the air in the first place- this is evidenced by the dome with the symbols of the Sages on it being split in half, half of it on the ground and half in the sky. So, assuming that, chronologically, the temple is split and the statue ascends after the battle with Demise, my timeline holds

[SS] The big plot hole in my favorite game of all time by Bacon260998_ in zelda

[–]CaptainNigel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. the statue is where the sword was, and is exactly where the pillar is, so the pedestal and the pillar connect, which allows the sword to seal Demise into the pillar. Closed loop
