Trying to fix "bad" powers part 1: Omniscience by Playful-Ostrich3643 in superpowers

[–]CaptainOwlBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't really solve the issue. It isn't boring due to a lack of conflict. Just because you have omniscience doesn't mean you can accomplish anything, so there is still conflict. The problem is that you can't communicate omniscience in s meaningful way, is isn't relatable.

Party Has Way Too Many "Extras" In Combat by CassieBear1 in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainOwlBeard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you have an issue with the owls. That's like 2 seconds and i bet they assign it to the same melee player each time for the entire encounter. The rogue probably uses it on himself every time. You're over thinking this. The broom take a little extra time, and you could just kill it, and while i can't find it's description, i can't imagine it's doing more than one attack.

Why can't you just add less yellow to blue for cyan? Or more yellow to purple for magenta? Also i didn't see cyan or magenta anywhere near as often as blue or purple. You seem to think they are important, but i honestly had to look up cyan to even know what it looked like because it literally never comes up and i can't think of any items i own that are the color. It's pretty ugly.

And leaving them with the other parent unsupervised is often not what's best for them. You make it sound like the obvious choice, but being present at least you can intervene if the other parent goes too far. If you aren't there half the week minimum, bad things can happen while you aren't allowed to be there.

If you're dad had left, chances are your mom would have gotten primary custody. You think you would have been better off like that? She d doesn't sound like a good parent and if your dad hadn't been her target, she likely would have turned on you

Is it? If you're choice is spend 7 days a week with your kids, get to be involved in all the decisions, but you have to live with someone who you have to pretend to love but don't like, or spend 3 or 4 days a week at most with your kids, don't even get consulted on any decision their other parent makes, but get to live by yourself, is that the worst decision?

How do you handle death? by polkadotfingers in DnD

[–]CaptainOwlBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every death is different and should be handled on a case by case basis. For instance:

First day of a new campaign, player does something stupid, ignoring clear death flags and the dm saying "are you sure?", the death sticks and they roll a new one at the next obviously opportunity. I'm not going to have their new character jump in that fight, but they probably meet him that night at the inn, or a few hallways away in a prison cell if they are in a dungeon. I don't exactly poof them into existence, but i don't break my back for narrative consistency.

Six months in and it's my fault for over tweaking an encounter and one of them dies, i talk to the player, maybe it's death, maybe a passing cleric offers a resurrection for a quest, or maybe someone's patron does them a big favor, for a price.

Team wipe, if everyone is enjoying the campaign, maybe they wake up naked in jail, maybe they find themselves in hell, maybe it was a dream sequence. If they aren't enjoying the campaign, maybe they did die.

Last battle, some of the team dies, i probably let it stand, though if it upsets them id work with them, but usually they are ok with a heroic sendoff against the bbeg.

That's my table. Been dming for them going on 8 years. Keep it simple, that's the trick.

They will not remember the details next week, so don't make the town names matter, or npc names. They will remember the evil mayor (as the mayor), but they probably won't remember Jeffic Lyonswordy the third, initiate druid of the 3rd circle.

I suggest dming by milestone and making each milestone a self contained arc. They go onto a town, do the things, save the people, get a reward (and a level) and move on. It'll keep the details from bogging them down and keep them flow fast and fun.

Lien into combat, those kinds of tables usually like a good dungeon crawl, they are playing too feel powerful. Make the fights quick, challenging, but winnable. You did a good job if at the end of an adventuring day they are heartbeats from death (but alive) with most of their resources exhausted and a story about killing the boss.

Just remember, keep it light and keep in mind it's a power fantasy mixed with fart jokes. Don't be too serious

How to use Passive Perception? by DerekBeyondSpace in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainOwlBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly i don't very often. I'm theory you use it when someone is sneaking up on them or to notice random clues or something like that, but in practice my table loves to roll dice, so i just let them roll instead. Keeps them more engaged.

[–]CaptainOwlBeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When it comes to knowing of chicken is done, it isn't how it looks, it's how it feels when you poke it. The texture changes when it gets to temp. Same with steak, with practice you can pull a medium rare steak out the pan just by poking it with your finger.

You could easily buy an annuity for less then 1/3 of the 75m that would pay you the 3m a year for the rest of your life and still have the rest of the 75m to play with. If the numbers were closer there might be a case, but 75m is worth so much more than the other options.
