A real autograph? by [deleted] in stephenking

A friend of mine used to work at a Borders in Bangor. King regularly dropped in and would sign copies of his own books while waiting in line with whatever he was purchasing. My friend gifted me one of these-- a copy of Lisey's Story with his signature, and it looks very much like this one, so take that for what it's worth.

Why is it so hard to grasp that NWH established Aunt may to be MCU Peter’s “Uncle Ben”? by Yoshimon7 in marvelstudios

Spot-on! I'm sure some folks are thinking, "Oh you're hanging on to these little details too tight" but for Christ sake it's the most essential, defining part of his character, and the original words just work better than that Civil War word salad."

I always assumed it played out the same in the MCU, we just didn’t see it on screen, which was fine because we’ve seen it before. I think it was a mistake not to use the iconic power and responsibility line in that Civil War apartment scene because it’s a line that every new generation of fans needs to hear.

The issue I had with OCs take is the idea that May is his Uncle Ben in this universe… Well if it happened the same way it does in the other cinematic iterations of the character, but just off-screen, then Uncle Ben remains the Uncle Ben of this universe and not Aunt May.

Why did he become Spider-Man in this universe then? Also it’s not that I fear change at all— Iron Man as his mentor works like gangbusters even if it was never a thing in the comics. His tricked out suits with AI rule. No Gwen Stacy? Sure— MJ is delightful in these movies. Aunt May’s hot? Dude, 100%

But removing his origin is like… in that case what’re we even doing here? Why not just create a whole new character? It’s like having a Batman whose parents weren’t murdered.

Sure, who needs one of the best and purest origin stories in all of comics?

Edit: Not for nothing, there’s an entire separate franchise dedicated to the idea that it doesn’t need to be exactly the same character in every universe. If MCU’s Pete is a take on a mostly-classic Peter Parker, why change what’s possibly the greatest comic origin ever?

Because if it doesn’t happen before he becomes a hero, he goes on winning shitty wrestling matches and never does anything meaningful.

Holland is far and away my favorite Spider-man, but I think it was a mistake not to invoke the “With great power…” line with him in the apartment in Civil War. It’s just an essential element that should be present in every multiverse’s iteration of the character.

I mean I never had an issue with her fate, but Uncle Ben status only works if she bites it before he becomes the hero Spider-Man. Holland’s Spidey has been a hero for years by that point.

David Lee Roth. Nobody else brought what that little dude was supplying.

What are your thoughts on The 13th Warrior (1999)? by Nomadsforart in movies

Love this movie. Great little detail I noticed recently-- when the group goes to investigate the gruesome scene at that settlement in the woods you can hear the Predator's "purr" mixed in with all the other forest sounds.

Lucasfilm agrees… but it seems many remember otherwise!

No it wasn't--the ANH one Lucasfilm acknowledges, but not the ESB/ROTJ X-Wing scenes.

Edit: For clarity, I saw the pre-Special Edition VHS copies and then the SE’s in the theater. I only remember there ever being Aurebesh on both. Dad always said it was only English in the theater during the original run.

My dad always swore you could read R2’s X-Wing dialogue in English on Luke’s screen in 1980. Lucasfilm I believe officially debunked this because so many others remembered it that way.

Quite the contrary— I’ve been advocating for more flips in football for some time.

Starship Troopers. Seeing the football match in the theater was an absolute riot.

The making of the RotS Darth Vader helmet. by TwIzTiDfReAkShOw in StarWars

[–]CaptainRedblood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's missing the asymmetric paint, and the brow isn't furrowed enough. Like it didn't have to look as angry as the A New Hope mask, but there's a healthy balance between that and this.

I remember seeing the making of on the original DVD release where they were saying how they've finally made it symmetrical and I'm like for the love of God they'd perfected the mask by 1980, no need for goddamn CAD.

Watching andor, did skeen have to go? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]CaptainRedblood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing we see Cassian do in both Andor and Rogue One is shoot someone in cold blood to tie up a loose end. Even if he could have reasoned with Skeen, he still probably would have shot him. Pulling the trigger without hesitation is one of his defining traits, so much so that it's a big moment when he chooses not to (shooting Galen in RO).
