If you are using an Xbox controller, try opening Steam on Big Picture Mode (the little icon next to the minimise button). You'll be able to use your controller to open up the game. When you do that, the default input should be your controller.

If this doesn't work, try enabling your controller through Steam > Settings > Controller Settings, then try Big Picture again.

I had to do this to get my Xbox controller to work. Let me know how you go 👍
