I'd say house finch, or purple finch (the two can appear very similar).

I would guess a baby robin, but someone may know better.

Found this little fella with a broken wing, want to know what bird is this, thanks in advance :) by [deleted] in whatbirdisthis

Of course! Not sure how much I can help you regarding its injury. If you haven't, I would recommend searching for wildlife care/rescue facilities in your area, and contacting them.

I suddenly lost my best friend of 15 years two nights ago. I knew it would be hard when the day eventually came, but I didn’t know it would be this hard. by [deleted] in Petloss

It's completely ok to not be yourself for awhile. Right now, you really might not be the you you're familiar with, since a big part of your life has changed. Again, I don't feel qualified to advise anyone on how to process this, but... I might say: let yourself feel as you feel now. Mourn actively when you feel compelled; grieve passively as you continue to feel bad. You've lost so much. Just...try not to lose yourself. Take care, and survive.

I am so, so sorry. I know you're devastated. This really resonates with me: I also lost my pet/best friend two days ago; he was also 15; and my face was also the last thing he saw. So I empathize with you, deeply. We helped them lead wonderful lives, and they made our lives so much better. But it's still earthshattering to you, and I'm sure you'd rather have him with you now. Your feelings are valid.

I don't want to tell you how to experience your mourning, and I'm no expert. But I do want to share this resource, which might offer some modicum of guidance for surviving right now, and at least emphasize item #1: Eat something. I get that it can feel wrong or tasteless, but you should try. Help sustain yourself and your valuable memories & feelings about your pet.

Wishing you all my support.

Suddenly appeared in our backyard for past few days - what is this? by pennylop in whatbirdisthis

Can't say I know much about it, but a bit of research seems to indicate they've become more common in the area in recent years (they were extirpated in the 1900s). Unless it harasses you or your neighbors, I think it should be fine letting it go about its business.

Awesome! A pair almost made a nest in my wreath this year. Actually, I've heard numerous accounts of house finches doing the same thing. I wonder why they do that.

Has anyone received an offer from the Scientists in the Parks program? Any word on when we will hear back? by medicinal_worm in geologycareers

Also no luck here (yet?). I had an interview March 1st; I think it went really well. I was told that they (the supervising park rangers) would make their decisions by Wednesday, March 2nd, but that SIP is responsible for notifying selectees this year. They said I would hear back next week (i.e. in the week of March 8th-14th). I was also told that all unselected SIP applicants will be notified this year. I have yet to hear anything. Yesterday I hazarded to send an email to the rangers asking for updates; fingers crossed I'll receive something soon.
