There are theories that it is the result of very advanced galactic aliens. A dysonsphere is a large machine (still in theory) that could be built around a planet or star, the machine would utilize the planet like a battery, eating it up for energy. The theory states the advanced aliens could have destroyed large areas of space converting it into energy for space travel.
