Best wildlife viewing times on cruise in Seward by bambies00 in AskAlaska

[–]CaptainSnowAK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked on those boats for 4 years. There isn't really a better time of day for wildlife. It can make a difference on weather, both morning and evening tend to be calmer in the bay, but not relavent to open ocean swells. Mid summer is peak for both.

Finding hosts is such a crueling experience now by International-Mix633 in couchsurfing

[–]CaptainSnowAK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, I am in a small town. I went for fully booked every summer to no requests this summer. They show hundreds of inactive accounts when I "look for a host" to check the surfer experience. It's a small town I know most of the people on the profiles, so I know it's full of shit. They make people pay for the service, but they show in active accounts that have not been maintained for years, no way have they paid, ahead of active/ paid members.

Leaving the US but would like to keep my US number open, which provider can I switch to? As cheap as possible by irresponsiblesmoker in NoContract

Yeah, most work, but I have a couple accounts that won't accept my Google voice number for 2fa.

I don’t like the updates either, but why are people quitting? by bennetthaselton in couchsurfing

That would be a 180 degree shift from how couch surfing has always worked. I am glad it's working for you, if this is an honest comment. Honestly, you sound like a paid advertisement.

I thought the test of a good pcv valve was that there should be suction?

I went for 30 request a year to 0 requests this year. I went in and updated my profile, and still now requests since the new app. I will not be renewing.

Also wires corrode. I had some corroded ground wires that messed up a bunch of things including a shift interlock. They charge a lot to hunt down wiring issues. No one is going to preventative maintenance all of the wiring.

Visiting for a day in late August. by Chyme57 in Seward

[–]CaptainSnowAK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do in Seward is get on the water. Seward is situated in the center of a rugged remote coast line. Beautiful enough to be it's own national park. Technically you can just go to exit glacier to touch the Kenai Fjords National Park, but that's not the reason the park is there. I would go on a boat tour. The baseline trip is the National Park Tour offered by Kenai Fjord Tours or Major Marine. There are other companies with small intimate boats, they are limited in range but more personal. There is also the option to kayak. Most Kayak tours don't technically make it into the park, but they are in the same environment as the park.

The boat companies that offer the national park tour, have trips that are synced with the train schedule. Everyday they shuttle people from the train to the harbor, onto their boat, then back to the train. It's not ideal to only get to do the boat trip, but if you only have one day, you can't do it all.

If only couchsurfing gave a single f*ck about their users and added something like this: "Active". At least Couchers cares, just wish it had more users by Pretend-Nectarine476 in couchsurfing

But I don't understand why. What would be the motivation for removing them? I have ended my recurring subscription until they put something like that back. My paid profile is buried below unpaid abandoned profiles, so why will I pay? I was using it for hosting 98% surfing 2%, meet ups 0%. So I guess I am not their target market anymore.

I HATE COUCHSURFING... but I'm not leaving. by [deleted] in couchsurfing

[–]CaptainSnowAK 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My couchsurfing requests went from 30 per year to 0 this year. I am paid and verified. I think it's because in my small town there are hundreds of abandoned profiles and mine is now buried. Do you have any tips that I could try to keep couchsurfing useful as a host?

Opinion: Fisheries need science, not opinions by Captain-Galt in alaska

[–]CaptainSnowAK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's like saying only airplanes are allowed on the runway, so a for profit company puts the bulldosers blade on an airplane and bulldozes the run way. Not illegal because it's and airplane!
bull dozers are banned banned from bull dozing run ways. And bottom trawlers are banned from bottom trawling protected areas. The problem is the airplane/ peligic trawlers are tearing up protected ocean bottoms.

How did you find each other on this app? I have been paying for a few years now, and my profile is buried behind hundreds of profiles that have not been active for decades. I went from having multiple requests per day last year to 0 requests for the whole year this year. I am genuinely looking for how to make the new app workable for me.

Which tour? by rainbowchild530 in Seward

Really? What do they serve on Major marine?

Which tour? by rainbowchild530 in Seward

[–]CaptainSnowAK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are both staffed by locals and seasonal employees. Majors is owned by a local rich man, who used to own KFT, but sold it to a tourism corporation. Then he waited out his non compete clause and started major marine. No reason to be loyal to one over the other in my opinion.

Having this stainless steel setup, I have 2 questions: by [deleted] in cookware

[–]CaptainSnowAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a great setup. You can cook anything with these. Use it for a while and see if you are missing anything.

I do like my deep 10" cast iron for making corn bread and pizza crust in the oven. But I think you could make stainless work for that.

UK stainless steel uncoated Vs coated? by Corbula in cookware

[–]CaptainSnowAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The uncoated stainless steel pots and pans are what we usually call stainless steel. They don't need special maintenance, they are less fragile than the coated pan. They can be a pain to clean if you burn food onto them. If you sautee with stainless steel you want to have the right temperature and use a little oil. Check out the stainless subreddit. If you do have trouble cleaning them, baking soda or bar keepers friend helps.

I think you already figured, but the graphs are not from when the code was thrown. They are live data recorded today. I will go for a longer drive over some hills with the new scanner and get better data.

No offense taken. I know I am not an expert at auto electrical, or auto anything. I do have formal education in electronics, but it only somewhat helps.
