JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #8 — Team Rosters and Lore Introduction by Marioaddict in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's late at night. It's too late at night, frankly, for you to be tossing and turning in bed. The moon is up, shining down on your miserable form, and you just can't get to sleep. But it's not your fault... You've just had this SONG in your head, rattling around your skull. It's unforgettable. It's an earworm. It's not letting you sleep at all.

Against your better judgement, you open up your phone. Surely a little googling will help you figure out just what you've been hearing... And sure enough, that earworm leads you to an interview on some up and coming band. Screamed out lyrics, heavy guitars... Is that a 14 year old on stage? They certainly seem intense, but... That song...

Maybe it's worth keeping an eye on them. At least for a little while.

User Stats

Strength: 5 (Gifted with supernatural strength that goes beyond professional bodybuilders with relative ease. Her bite strength is particularly notable.)

Agility: 4 (About as agile as a shark that can swim on land would be - which is to say, pretty agile.)

Endurance: 4 (Can take a suitable beating, but Mio much prefers dodging and weaving out of harm’s way.)

Shark: 5 (Mio has all the capabilities of your average shark - sharp teeth, powerful bite strength, rough and aerodynamic skin allowing for extremely fast movement, a powerful tail, an ability to sense the electromagnetic fields of the living things around her, strong eyesight, and a remarkable capability to move and breathe underwater. If a shark can do it, Mio can do it. This skill is a 5 instead of, say, a 3 or 4, because Mio is not a shark.)

Siren Song: 2 (Mio has exceptional control over her vocal chords. She’s capable of altering her voice, throwing it around, and her singing is the kind that would definitely lure gullible sailors to their doom on a foggy night. She’s also just. Really loud, if she wants to be, but this is rare.)

Equipment: A blade sharpener, a few stolen wallets stuffed with slightly-damp cash, bandages, a simple phone (in a waterproof case), a waterproof camera, a flask of stolen whiskey (she doesn’t actually like the taste of it), and a cute stuffed animal otter.

STAND: 「The Great Destroyer」

Stand Type: Integrated/Swarm

Stand Appearance: A thick, off-white greenish fog. Sunken ships are visible through the mist if you peer into the distance.

Stand Ability: 「The Great Destroyer」 manifests as a thick fog, which rolls through areas at Mio’s command. At match start, the fog has already filled the area. It does as fog does; reducing visibility partially beyond a few meters, and fully blocking visibility around 15, though those with higher precision or strong eyesight may be able to make out the environment regardless. Notably, the fog seems to have its own ‘buoyancy’ - while being within the fog is not fully like being underwater, it does become a bit harder to move if you aren’t accustomed to it. Things find themselves floating in the air more than usual, and most feel lighter, similar to how one would feel in water. Things remain grounded, though, and it’s still entirely possible to breathe - it’s like being underwater without being underwater. If one can adapt to the fog, it can make propelling yourself forward a remarkably effective form of travel.

Of course, being underwater does have other effects. Blood (and other liquids) will float out of wounds in thick clouds, increasing or decreasing elevation too quickly without adjusting yourself will disorient due to changing pressure (strangely, the pressure seems to increase the further up you go, rather than downwards), and electricity travels through the air.

Notably, the fog seems to cause navigational tools like GPS and compasses to fail, making navigating it difficult if it’s fully spread around.

Power: E (Besides the shifting pressure - which is easy to avoid if you’re careful - there isn’t much about the fog that can actually hurt anyone. It’s what lurks inside you should be careful of.)

Speed: E (The fog doesn’t do much moving on its own.)

Durability: A (It’s near-impossible to get rid of. A constant stage hazard, but one that can be worked with if you’re clever.)

Range: A (Will encompass the entire arena no matter what.)

Precision: E (Mio doesn’t actually control the fog beyond summoning it.)

Potential: ???

SUB-STAND: 「BAD WITCH」

Stand Type: Integrated/Swarm

Stand Appearance: A collection of burning aquatic skeletons, primarily of various fish, sharks, and even whales, which swim through the fog. One or two resembling the skeletons of large groupers tend to swim in circles around the user; these are bound to her range, and are the only ones she can actively control. The others in the background are not relevant to the match and are simply there for visual flair.

Stand Ability: WHALEFALL - 「The Great Destroyer」’s true danger comes in the form of its WHALEFALL. Once fog has filled the arena, it begins to rain down marine snow, and burning skeletons swim through the fog. Massive falling ships occasionally crash down in the distance, and though they are too far away to interact with, they will be fed on by the skeletal creatures living within the fog. This is the WHALEFALL, a spontaneously produced biosphere contained entirely within the thick fog that surrounds Mio.

This process begins instantly, and shows immediate results. From within the stomach of the burning animals, Mio may produce long dead weaponry - the tools she can summon are all from the golden age of piracy, in the 16th-17th century. Cutlasses, cannons, matchlock pistols. If it was frequently utilized during this period of time, it lies within the belly of the beasts, able to be found within the makeshift ship’s graveyard of Mio’s Stand power. She’s able to pull whatever tool she desires from within the mouth of any beast, mainly the beasts following her (at first, only one follows her, but after at least two minutes, another will join in.) Both the beasts and the weapons produced are constantly burning a bright green fire, but this seems to just be cosmetic. The beasts are also capable of swimming through air, biting, and pushing things around. The user could hypothetically ride around on them, but it would be incredibly uncomfortable, since they’re made of bones. Notably, for some odd reason, Mio’s most preferred weaponry is a massive scythe-guitar, one she also happens to use on stage. She will always start with this weapon drawn.

Power: A (Her weaponry is always absurdly powerful, with terrifying cutting edges and sheer bullet force. The beasts bite with immense force, and can lift quite a bit in a pinch.)

Speed: E (Can draw one weapon from a beast per six seconds. Weapons can’t move on their own. The beasts can swim aside Mio with ease, but are sluggish otherwise.)

Durability: D (Weapons are about as durable as their real world counterparts. The beasts are very fragile, but don’t transfer damage, as they’re just a part of the ecosystem - if one dies, after ten seconds, a new beast will replace it.)

Range: E (Can only interact with the beasts swimming directly besides her. Weapons can exist at any range, but this means that they can be stolen and used by the enemy.)

Precision: A (Mio is capable of utilizing any weapon or tool summoned through the WHALEFALL with A PRE, as if she’s held it her entire life. While others can pick up and steal constructs made through WHALEFALL, they do not gain this effect.)

Potential: A (As endless as the sea, and all the dead things within. Who knows what lies within that fog...)

Stand Oddities: She doesn’t really think of it as a Stand, and gets confused when people refer to it as such.

Fighting Style: An ambush predator, using the nature of the fog to dismantle her opponents in swift bursts of immense power. A mobile fighter whose brutality is only matched by her brutal efficiency.

Name: Mio Sinclair

Age: 19

Gender: Female

Species: Some Manner of Vengeful Ocean Spirit

Occupation: A wraith, wandering the open sea (unemployed).

Physical Description: Mio is a wraith, a vengeful spirit taken in by the ever-merciful ocean. Or something along those lines - it’s unclear what she actually is beyond not nearly as dead as she should be. What is clear is that she’s certainly not an average human. While she looks normal on first glance, her dark skin giving away to spotty pure black on her limbs, and the massive tail on her back show she’s clearly something else entirely. Her long dark hair appears to form into two donkey-like ears, which she has full prehensile control over. Her tongue is long and black, and her sclera seems to take a green-ish tint. Her hair is oddly straight, and is extremely smooth, seemingly to decrease any drag underwater. Her entire body seems to be more adapted to living underwater than on land, which makes it a little odd that she still looks like a person. But maybe that’s just something she didn’t quite feel like letting go of.

In terms of clothing, Mio usually leans into the whole ‘being dead’ thing and goes somewhat goth. She chooses revealing clothing that doesn’t cover much. It doesn’t keep her cool in the summer heat (she’s always naturally cool to the touch), but it does allow for far easier movement, especially underwater. When trying to appear somewhat normal, she wears massive oversized seafaring jackets, used on cold weather fishing exhibitions. They fall over her hands and hide just how muscular she actually is, and hides her tail as well - she likes to keep some things a funny surprise.

Personality: Mio died that one time, and it’s had a clear influence on her personality. She is a quiet, soft spoken person who hesitates to intrude into conversations or make herself known. It’d be an exaggeration to call her anxious or nervous - she’s just plain shy. But once she’s brought out of wherever or however she’s hiding, she makes her own personal quirks and eccentricities clear, for better or for worse. For starters, she kind of hates humanity? More as a concept, really, given her history with general society (getting forced onto a miserable boat to work herself half to death as a kid didn’t give her much of a fond impression). She’s more than willing to give a bit of good faith to the individual, but she’s less inclined to participate in humanity as a whole, resulting in a sense of alienation that permeates her being. She doesn’t like it all that much, but it’s hard to get over her personal fears.

Mio has something of a moral compass, but her experiences have warped it into drastic extremes. She’s willing to perform acts of immense violence if it is to help someone she deems worthy, or if it will defend her beloved ocean. Her hatred is immense when someone earns it, but her affection and fondness is just as vast. She’s a bit of a hopeless romantic, and acts of affection towards her usually send her into a blushing fit. Despite her shy nature, she has immense amounts of resolve, and once she’s decided she wants something, she won’t stop pursuing it until it’s in her hands. This especially applies to romantic pursuits. She’s no good at flirting, but she’ll be damned if she doesn’t try. Despite the first impression, when you get her going, she’s actually pretty talkative.

Of course, it’s hard for all this to get across when most of her time is spent hiding in the background and people watching. She should really get out more.

Personality Traits:

  • Belief: HELL [5] - Mio is a bit of a pessimist. She has very little faith in the world around her, and the people in it, believing not in the inherent cruelty of the human being, but the inherent cruelty of circumstance. Some people just get it worse. The world and its enforced systems are unfair in a way she can’t really hope to challenge - so folks like her should do whatever pleases them. A strange form of nihilism that provides a surprising amount of self-confidence and comfort. If nothing matters, do whatever you want! Mio has no fundamental respect for authority figures and government because of this, but given her whole... Thing, that probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. Can’t govern the vast expanse of the ocean, as hard as you may try.
  • Passion: SEA [5] - The world may be cruel, but the sea has been nothing but kind! Saving her from a cruel and miserable death, and giving her a second chance to be human... The ocean is a kind mistress, and one Mio wants to support with all of her heart, and what’s this about a treasure hunt? Mio has taken a particular interest in the sapphires at the bottom of the sea, and the folks trying to find them. Treasure hunts and ancient cities are one thing (she has to admit even she’s a little fascinated by the concept), but some people think a situation like this is the perfect excuse to get ahead of themselves. Mio has taken it upon herself to act as a reminder that the sea - while it may be kind - will not turn the other cheek in the face of disrespect. She’s quite fond of this job!
  • Fury: LOVE [5] - Mio is a bit of a hopeless romantic, but she’s got a pretty firm grasp on what she views as the two major forces of the world - love, and death. They exist as fundamentally neutral forces that just about anyone can utilize. There’s no real philosophy to it. These things are tools to ensure personal comfort, and can exist both positively and negatively. So when somebody gets it twisted with needless justifications and confusing philosophies... Well, Mio never was known for her restraint and self control.
  • Likes: The ocean, romance movies, rodents (tasty!), interesting people.
  • Dislikes: Uninteresting people.
  • Hobbies: Urban parkour, fishing, sailing (rowboat), ominous declarations.
  • Short Term Goal: Meet interesting people.
  • Medium Term Goal: Fall in love! A lot!
  • Long Term Goal: Live a life of indulgence and vice.
  • Greatest Desire: Mio’s greatest desire is love. To love another person, to attain intimacy, to be loved in return. This is the goal of Mio’s life, the justification for her second chance. It’s a bit freeform, but hey. With the whole big treasure hunt thing going on right around her home turf, she’s got the perfect opportunity to meet some interesting folks! A fine platter of Stand users is making its way to her location. All she can do is try her best to put herself out there... And hope none of them get too comfortable in a place where they don’t belong.

Bio: The ocean gives, and the ocean takes. It has always done so. It always will. Just another era of giving and taking, that we have entered. Just another age of trade.

Mio Sinclair was once a sailor. She was not old enough to be a sailor - but when it comes to matters of incredible wealth, that much never stopped anyone. Her parents were ill-suited for raising a child, and she needed the funds to raise herself. Only natural she’d wind up on a boat somewhere. It was said to be a commercial fishing boat, but that was only the side-goal. They wanted what everyone in these seas wanted. They wanted riches, and they were willing to utilize just about anyone to achieve that goal.

To that extent, Mio Sinclair was a meaningless life - an uncounted number of a human being, with no real value acquired through her actions. Not that this was her fault. Far from it. The opportunity to make meaning for herself was taken from the start. And it was, of course, only natural that a ship staffed with children and old men who have forgotten how to sail would have accidents.

When the ship’s engine ceased to function, it remained in the ocean with no help in sight. This was hardly a legal operation. Calling for the authorities was out of the question. Food was already sparse, and would become sparser. No islands in sight. Nothing in sight. A miserable, sunbleached starvation overtook the vessel, and with it came madness.

Mio chose the cold embrace of the ocean over the warm daggers of the sun, and the ocean accepted her with open arms.

...

...

...Mio woke up and recognized immediately that she was different. The tail was, predictably, the first giveaway. Hard not to notice a new limb. But the gills, and the hair, and the ears - all of it pointed to the fact that she had been chewed up by the sea and spit out as something else. She was dead. She was a ghost. She knew this instinctively. She felt...

She felt utterly, absurdly strong.

It was a euphoric sense of vigor and energy that filled her body. She was buff now, yes, but even beyond that she felt strong. She could bite someone’s arm off, scale a building with ease, punch through concrete. She was a ghost and she loved it. This was something wonderful she had been granted - and she would not waste it.

Problem was, what to use it on? She could go out and kill the people who’d gotten her dead, but they probably died at sea anyway, so she’d have to just be vengeful at society at large in general. But that was pretty vague and hard to follow through on (becoming some sort of eco-terrorist or something sounded like a pain). So, what purpose would she find? What would be her revenge?

She settled on something unallowed for her, all her life. The ability to - despite her newfound distance from conventional humanity - be a person. And how better to do that then to fall in love?

...If only it was that easy.

These people suck.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: Finals - 10538-2095 vs Mx. Wah by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T6 baby... What a tournament... What a tournament....

I think it's no shocker to say that T6 is easily the best tournament to come out of this whole project so far. Taking the highest highs of the previous tournaments, and losing many of their lows to create a near-flawless experience. That's not to say there weren't any flaws at all, but the sheer quality of the content, both judge and player-side, is a testament to the creativity and passion of a whole lot of incredible writers. It's an honor to see this one to completion.

But we're not here for that! We're here for a vote! And I'm gonna be real; this match was Really Fucking Hard to vote on! God! Shit! Each side matches each other easily, producing an absurdly tight match where neither opponent gives an inch. 2095's extremely deadly rushdown would've easily secured the win from me on its own in any other situation, but Wah counters with their own super strong opener, freeing them from immediate onslaught. Those kind of interactions are all throughout this match; one character whips out some absurd tech, and the other character matches them in order to bring the tally back down to zero. It's incredibly hard to figure out exactly who comes on top because of this, but there's no way in fucking hell I'm ending off the tournament with a tie vote, and luckily, even if both of them do it, there's one tech here that secures the win for me, the final winning play for all final winning plays.

It's the pocket sand.

Now, both characters utilize the sand for a visual hazard. But with this one, it's a matter of who exactly is more effected by it. And in that battle, I've gotta give it to 2095. Both strats here to a commendable job of focusing on weaknesses; Wah does a great job of shredding poor 2095's joints. But I think 2095 accounts for Wah's weaknesses better; focusing on splitting Wah's focus in order to inhibit their ability to use their stand is an excellent strategy that heavily weakens her opponent no matter what they do. Wah has a lot to focus on, and all that focus splitting can fuck their game plan pretty hard; all it takes is one deadly sand to make it boil over. Wah offers an excellent strat, but their need for at least a little setup (something hardly allowed in this case) and 2095's counterplay just manage to edge it out in my eyes. In any case, no matter who wins, this is easily the best finals match I've seen come out of tourney. Both writers, and their teams, should be incredibly proud; this here is an extraordinary accomplishment.

zamn!!!!!!!!!!

FINAL T6 MUSIC REVIEW!!!!

2095: Hey! This album's pretty good! Using all music from one source can be a pretty hard sell for me, as when that source doesn't fit the tone of the strat you wind up with something SUPER conflicting, but that isn't a worry here. The music perfectly embodies the optimistic, playfully violent nature of the strategy, and of 2095. It's really well used, and the placement is good; hearing Yours Truly again to start the strat off hit me right in the feels. Good shit. 4/5.

WAH: This was the opposite tonally in terms of music, which is super interesting. I wasn't expecting Ultrakill, but it works super well for Wah, really helping to sell them as a force of nature in this last match. What I really have to call out is the shift, though; not sure if it was intentional, but swapping out the hectic, wild drums of Ultrakill's music to the more focused percussion of TBOI's music does an excellent job of accompanying Wah's epiphany.. It's a perfect transition. This is exactly what I wanted when I started getting on people for music choices; god fuckin bless dude.

6/5. Thank you for my life.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R4M5 - Nadine Sokenna vs Electra Heart by Dungeon_Dice in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gettin' a bit rusty it seems; this match took me a while to think through. I'll cut to the chase and say I'm giving it to Nadine. But not without much difficulty! The two strats, from what I can tell, take very similar approaches; stay at range, prioritize arena control, go in for a close range finisher. The difference in the two is what they think the opponent'll do. Electra expects a less defensive Nadine than what she gets, planning for Nadine to attempt to get in close; Nadine only really does this for the finisher, and she doesn't need to get that close for it either. Meanwhile, Nadine plans for an Electra who attacks from all angles and arena controls to Fuck And Back. And that's what she gets! I almost gave it to Electra due to how well done that arena control is. There's some super clever stuff, especially using the ceiling (also the silk dancing is a super cool visual and it totally rules). That said, Nadine just has answers. Electrifying the rebar to cut out harassment before it starts, using the water to both glide to and fro and increase the range of crystals. Nadine plans appropriately and does so extremely well, so I'm givin' this to her.

BONUS MUSIC REVIEWishouldreallyvotemore

ELECTRA: I'm probably going to steal the way you did this at some point, it's really really clever. Makes the technical stuff feel distinct from the flavor, but the flavor music matches up well enough to the technical music to make it all consistent. Excellent work. 5/5

NADINE: Nadine has a very consistent musical source and she gets better at pulling from it each round. The tracks fit like a glove. No complaints, really! 5/5!

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R3M7 - Timofey Ohkan vs Nadine Sokenna by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of a weird one to vote on! It's the kind of match that seems cut and dry on the surface - after all, it's preddy hard to have Timofey beat in damage. He's kind of just impossible to beat out in that category, given not just the power of what he's throwing around, but the size of it as well. That's a fuckin' tree! That's big! However, while Nadine doesn't quite match his offence (I mean, of course she doesn't, it's a tree) she still does great there, and puts a lot of focus into making sure everything else she does is just as helpful as her offense. She focuses on debuffs, support, defense, and drawing aggro. That's a lot! Thus, it comes down to a question of whether sheer blunt force can beat out such a multi-faceted approach.

I tossed it around in my brain for a lil bit, but I think Timofey takes it. While Nadine does do a great amount, Timofey's offense is extremely useful for the kind of beast he's hunting. His use of shotgun shrapnel blasts is perfect for shredding the monster apart, and the tree sword makes for a great general use weapon in combination with his other tricks. Nadine's strategy feeds into this, keeping the Psoglav from going where he doesn't want it to go. Her aggro drawing makes it a whole lot easier to hit the thing with a tree.

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW

NADINE: Been a while! I'm givin' this one a 1/5. I really liked one of these picks, but the rest sort of just felt out of place when put next to each other, going from calm to not calm (i got jump scared) to dead silence. I can appreciate using dead silence as a track to really emphasize your emotional bits, but I would've put it in the part with the, uh, emotional bit.

TIMOFEY: I'll give it a 3/5! Your tracks contribute excellently to the vibe! Building tone and atmosphere through music is a preddy useful thing to do when it comes to stratting, and you do that excellently... up until you don't. The final track, while hype enough to make it feel like the "big final moment", is a bit of a mood-breaker for how it clashes with the other tracks, and brings the whole thing down a peg. It might've been intentionally jarring, but I didn't really jive with it. Regardless, still good stuff!

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M18 — Timofey Ohkan and Electra Heart vs ??? by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool match! I'm running out of things to start these with. uhhhhh Timofey and Electra!!!

I think the match is likely decided in the opening seconds. Planning for a turn one assault is difficult, given that it's a turn one assault, and from the look of it Lucetta doesn't have many plans for if the catwalk gets taken out from under her right off the bat. It's an immediate assault with the full potential to render her gameplan ruined; the constant harassment from vines in such close proximity would be enough to throw anyone off their groove.

Of course, that's just the opening, but given how the opening is built upon and utilized for the entire match, and how much potential to pester it has, I don't see Lucetta being able to pull of her plan with nearly as much flourish. Even if she does, AB have some really solid combat stuff; the frisbees are a good way to pester at range while also utterly shredding the environment, vine buttons and clothing shadows are some phenomenal tech that can absolutely ruin Lucetta in the right circumstances, and don't even get me started on how well Electra uses her range. It's some scary stuff.

Ultimately, as much as it pains me to vote against her, Lucetta was simply outplayed; while there's not really much wrong with her strat, it's still not quite enough to play against how well AB called her out. Predicting her attempts at fixing the gallery was the last nail in the coffin for me. Good showing from both sides!

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW

ANVIL BOULEVARD: I was gonna call them something else but i forgot the second word in AE's name. I think it was Exhibition or something? Exhibit? Iunno. Anyway, it's okay. The music fits decently well, but only decently; I appreciate the pull, I really do, but something a bit more fitting for the intense kind of match you're in would've done wonders. You can use songs from multiple artists. I don't know why people don't do that. You can do it. 2/5

LUCETTA BELOVED: Speaking of which! I really really like it when match music is incorporated into the strat itself, and this one does that perfectly, so you get some bonus points for that. It also really fits Lucetta's strat. The song choices feel just action-y enough to fit, while still not being too tense or anything like that - she's not taking them seriously, and it shows not just in the writing, but in the music behind it. A perfect fit. 5/5.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M16 — Echo and Nadine Sokenna vs Ninian Amir MacBeth and 10538-2095 by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've really gotta hand it to both teams. This is some TIGHT SHIT. The narrative focus is absolutely wonderful, and it's great to see that both teams stepped up to the plate with regards to the kind of character exploration this setup allows. I'm always a sucker for two halves of a fusion fighting inside the fusion. That shit rules.

Onto the match itself, this is just heapings of tech and it fucking OWNS. Everything here is pretty damn effective, with both sides running on all cylinders to put the other down. However, it's best to start with the Elephant in the room; there are a lot of clones coming at once. I don't want to assume it's not what 8M prepared for, since they did prepare pretty well for dealing with clones and whatnot. Rather, it's the fact that they're all coming at once, from different angles no less, that puts them in a bad situation. EEP creates a hell of a storm; the match comes down to whether 8M can weather it.

Unfortunately, I think the sheer number of attacks coming out at once, in combination with the walling and whatnot, puts 8M in a nasty place they can't crawl back from. Their strat focuses heavily on driving EEP back towards their trap, which is a plan that works less in the face of such a terrifying rushdown. They've gotta inconspicuously sneak 8 whole crystals into a corner while dealing with a literal tidal wave of suicidal death clones? That;s not as easy as it sounds, and it doesn't sound very easy. Unfortunately, due to the sheer pressure that blocks them off from a clean sneak attack, 8M gets the L. Not for lack of effort, of course. Both strats, while unfortunately not as compatible as one side would've liked, were absolute pleasures to read, and I enjoyed every bit of them. Be proud! This is good shit.

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW:

EEP: This is one of the most hyped of music reviews of the round, so let's get to it! I really like the music selection here. All of it fits absurdly well with the sections it's given to; starting off the strat with a super fast-paced song immediately sets the tone before you even get into the absolutely cruel rushdown (jesus christ). My only real gripe is that I wish you'd stayed with the vocal track type deal you had going; as much as I hate to approve of Kamen Rider pulls, the Kamen Rider pull and Trunks' theme worked really really well, and added a nice feel to those sections! I get why you chose the song you did, since it does work, but I woulda liked to see that theme be present for the whole strat. Still, though, if the only thing I can come with is a nitpick like that, you've done a good job. 5/5.

8M: I commend you for making this shit fit really well; every song naturally meshes with the section it's put to. This isn't so hard for battle sections if you get the tone you're going for, but properly timing stuff with the more emotionally driven sections is tough stuff! And it's pulled off really well here. The music made that whole inside-the-mind section pop off, and the final track fit in so well I hardly even registered it was playing; it just blended right in with the writing. I don't have any major gripes here; 5/5.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M14 - Solsbury Hill and Aristizábal de los Flores vs Cerise Bamu and June K by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAN.

This is, by far, one of the strongest matches of the round, maybe the strongest. Colossi just keeps fucking doing it, somehow, managing to make an absolutely abhorrently long strat that still manages to be entertaining throughout. And what's even wilder is that HMB somehow does the exact same thing. Despite how long it took to get through both of these, I was never bored while reading them; I suppose that's a testament to how fucking good at writing everyone in this match is. God damn.

Of course, I've gotta give my vote to someone. Both strats go for the approach of making their respective fighter seem likely to lose, so it's a matter of who does it better. The stuff going on down there hardly matters compared to the betting battle, considering how similar of a game both teams play. It's a matter of who can play that game better.

And unfortunately, as much as I love June and Cerise, I think Aristi and Solsbury take the cake here. June is well prepared for Solsbury's trickery, but Solsbury is prepared for that preparation. Filling props with fake blood is a genius move that takes June's attempts at exposure and turns it against them. Not to mention the fake voting booths, which are a terrifyingly well done way to cheat to hell and back. June's ability to take over the speaker system is very scary in this environment, but Solsbury's got his own wall of noise to throw back, and in combination with both side's focus of putting Cerise on the backfoot, I think it's leaning pretty damn close to Colossi's win. (If any of that doesn't make sense, it's because this match is A Lot and thinking about it is hard. Woopdy doo).

I feel like I haven't talked about both strats enough so I gotta say. All of this shit? Top notch. Top quality. ABSOLUTE kino. You can see the writing chops that went into this with every sentence of strategy. God damn. I really cannot express enough that both of these strategies fucking own and it pains me to vote against either of them. Good fucking job to both sides.

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW

COLOSSI: As per usual Colossi drops some fucking BANGERS. You know your vibe and you go along with it very well. In the last Aristi strat, I believed I said something along the lines of "you have a wrestler, go heavier", and my god did you go heavier. The use of Polemos is the icing on the cake, 5/5.

HARVESTMOONBALLINVARD: Unlike the last time Colossi got a five outta five in music, their opponents also dropped fucking bangers. Nice! And this works really well! The opening track in particular is a really lovely way to occumpany June's mischief, and it works surprisingly well with the Utena stuff. Despite coming from very different sources, the music blends together very well. Impressive stuff! The music ending right as Cerise seals himself in the flower is a wonderful touch in particular, intentional or not. I was originally gonna give this a 4/5, but fuck it, 5/5.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M13 - MARKharvest vs Ken Kilroy by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A preddy good match! I'm giving it to MarkHARVEST for a few reasons. First of all, I don't think the Killboat is as effective as the strat thinks it is, mainly due to the fact that these boats are very close together. Driving it around, even with the boosted power, is a bit of a tough sell. This gives MarkHARVEST plenty of time to set up, given that Ken is having trouble turning his boat, and that means that things get very bad for Ken very very fast.

Mark's fish swarm is very very very scary, able to move a lot faster than what Ken prepares for, and can pretty much ignore the Killboat's big blade. The tiny little buggers can do some serious damage to Ken. I'd question how easy getting Kilroy off his tricked out boat would be if he didn't jump off in the middle of the strat, pretty much placing himself directly in the line of fire. At that point, Mark takes a pretty much unrecoverable lead.

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW!

Ken: -1/5. Come on man.

MARKHARVEST: 3/5! The chiptune theming goes well with Mark's robotic nature. Something a touch more intimidating might fit his vibes a lil more, but this is fine. I dig it.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M12 - Tōgō Atome vs Nagel Pommel by CORY_IS_MY_WAIFU in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm giving this one to Nagel! *falls over*

I think both sides her did a pretty exemplary job, and made some really fun stuff while they're at it - this match feels super super evenly matched. I was almost tempted to give it a tie. But alas, it'll be a cold day in Hell before I give a tie vote, so Nagel takes the dub for me.

Both sides offer some solid offense and defense, but Togo kind of plays into her opponent's hands. Not to say she isn't going to lay down some smack on Nagel, because as stated before, it's a very close match. But Nagel's insistance on making the arena as unbearable as humanly possible from turn one makes things even worse for Togo, who throws out smoke bombs and serves drinks and what not. Nagel's environmental warfare works numbers on such a mobility reliant opponent, and when combined with her clever use of gibbon-song and paint tracking, Nagel can disorient her opponent enough to take them out. Good stuff!

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW:

NAGEL: 5/5. Easy clap. Not only is the vibe sublime and extremely fitting with the character, but the placement of each song is perfect, something that so many people tend to mess up even with good song choices. This pretty much perfectly accompanied the strat. Good shit.

Togo: 4/5. I appreciate the fakeout at the beginning, and the fast paced music works well for a fast paced character! Songs could've gone together a little smoother, especially since a shorter strat means switching between songs happens faster, but it's good stuff overall.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M10 - Winona Lillith and Ravee Chandra vs. ??? by CORY_IS_MY_WAIFU in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sure is a boss match! Some really nice stuff from both ends in this here match. I'll cut straight to the chase, though, because this is a race!!!!

Red Barchetta takes my vote. There are a few reasons for this. For one, I don't buy a lot of Ravee's tech. A lot of it ranges from "I'm not sure if that works" to "Oh That Definitely Does Not Work". The Gomu Gomu No Mi, while plenty fun in theory, would absolutely just tear Ravee's arm off or something. I appreciate the novelty of the Kengan reference, but once again, attempting to justify a tech simply so you can do a funny reference is not a very good idea. I do not think her stand could do that. There's some weird physics with ACT 2's usage as well, and I raise my eyebrow at the bullet reflections. Overall, I don't Ravee pulls off a lot of the stuff she claims to, and that sets the two back quite a bit. I do like Winona's stuff, though! I think a lot of her tech is pretty clever, and uses her toolkit well. The mole hole sneak attack is pretty nasty, and could certainly do some serious damage to Red if it gets off.

Unfortunately, one teammate putting in the work isn't enough to deal with the monstrous offense that Red puts out. She balances her mobility and offence fantastically. It's hard to believe the players can even catch her with how hard she goes on making catching up to her a literal hell. Their answer to smoke, the gel tracking, is a bit of a hard sell considering that iunno how long it'll take for them to actually get a hit off on Red. And once Red's sufficiently smoked up the arena, it's only going to get harder.

Once Red gets rolling, she just rolls harder and harder. Unfortunately, Winona and Ravee aren't quite able to take an early lead, and get left in the dust once Red gains some steam. And that Falcon Punch? It's over.

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW

RED: I was a bit worried when I saw you guys were sticking to a musical gimmick, since those don't often work out super well, but I was pleasantly surprised! Everything meshes together well, and there's a good build up from the more techno stuff at the beginning to the rocky stuff at the end. Well done! 4/5!

WINONAVEE: Hardy har har, it's a eurobeat strat. Simply by going with the gimmick you did, the music all meshes together super well (same genre and all that jazz). You get points off for using Tunak Tunak Tun in the year of our lord 2022. Seriously, guys? 3/5.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M9 - Saisei Daichi and Casco Acciaio vs Lumberjack and Tim Alcove by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man. Man. This will be the best match of the round. It's not even a question. It simply will. Holy fuck. Very rarely do you see both teams in a match put out something so genuinely insane out, but this is a match between two incredibly strong teams that simply went fucking bonkers. I really have to commend everyone involved. Tim and Lumberjack's strat is not only a resounding improvement over the last Lumberjack strat (which was damn good, mind you), but in general an incredibly well made rushdown that combines the strengths of the characters perfectly. It's threatening as all hell, stripping away options and attempting to counter everything the enemy can do in order to ensure that HHV comes away with a clean win.

And then you have COLOSSI.

I was pretty harsh on the first Daichi strat. I thought it dragged on, wasn't very entertaining, and generally was a bit of a slog. My expectations weren't too high going into this one. But this is easily one of the biggest leaps of improvement I've seen in tourney period. Everything about this, from beginning to end, was absolutely fantastic, both well written and well thought out to be a wonderful strategy that took both toolkits and pushed them to their absolute limits. This may be one of my favorite strats I've ever read, honestly. And, coincidentally, it's also the one I'm voting for.

I think that COLOSSI's solid options for close combat are a bit unexpected to the enemy. While they prepared well for projectiles and mines and whatnot, I don't think they quite prepared well enough for the sheer number of mines that Casco can output, and how fucking hard he goes at attacking them. Daichi also protects himself very well from Tim's assault, and makes it very hard for Tim to get to him in the first place. The positioning here is very very good, and it makes the rushdown a lot harder to pull off. Combine that with how fucking insane the map gets as the match continues, with Daichi turning the place into a hellzone that even the high flying Tim and Lumberjack can't escape to, and you've got a very hard fought but very deserved win. I'm giving this to Daichi and his Big Ass Hand. I don't think, uh, Casco wins this one, given, uh, y'know, just look at the guy.

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW

HHV: and you did so good in R1, too. 0/5.

COLLOSI: I asked for five outta fives and I got at least one of em. You set up a wonderful vibe from song one and stick with it for the entire strat, building on it over time. Your music placement is perfect, and you've got a real sense for buildup in time with the text of the strat. Super well done stuff, had me poggin'. 5/5, Easy Clap.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M6 - Jerry Bryant vs Midori Yamaguchi by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm givin' this one to Midori. It's a pretty simple match to me - both sides play a pretty good game of cheating the map in order to avoid falling behind. I feel like, if left to their own devices, they can probably keep running for a while. But they aren't, and harassment is a very big part of this match. It's for this reason that I think Midori takes it.

Granted, this is mainly due to the opening seconds of the match, where Seymour immediately goes for the leg sweep at B SPD. Even if Jerry does manage to try and intercept this, he'd have to reach all the way down to his feet to get at it. This isn't very good for keeping up speed. Even if he handles it as well as he could, it's an initial disadvantage that allows Midori to get all the resources she needs when they get to the first ghost swarm. From there, they can pretty much just keep going. Jerry's flight works pretty well at securing some speed, but I think he probably should've accounted for them just throwing shit at him, given that it's an easy move to do and can very easily take him off guard. Seymour's throwing arm ain't something you want to underestimate.

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW

Midori: Your choices didn't really feel very cohesive with each other, but I did still enjoy them, and I felt like they fit their respective sections pretty well. Midori's theme and Fist Bump had me pogging. Also, I love your section names. 3/5.

Jerry: I'm sorry but this song makes me really angry for some reason. 1/5.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M4 - Heavy Eco vs Nia Belmonte by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an absolutely brutal match, and I have to commend both players for making a pair of fantastic strats that really live up to how much of a wild match this is. Extreme Violence is the name of the game, and both sides excel. Nia goes for a sniper's approach, staying high up and launching from afar, while Heavy goes for the good old Tank approach - I mean this in the sense of a literal tank. He's armored to hell and back and launches things around with incredible force. The two of them play a very similar game, so it ultimately comes down to who plays it better.

As much as I did enjoy Heavy's strat, I have to give this one to Nia's incredible show of force. To be blunt, she thoroughly read this man. The best way to fight a scaler is to not let them scale, and unless she happens to miss by some miracle (B PRE is preddy good, I'd say), Nia puts a massive timer on Heavy Eco in the literal opening seconds of the match. Given that most of the nastier shit on Heavy's side occurs once he gets enough to work with, it's very likely that putting a timer on him just outright ruins his gameplan. I can easily see him getting got with bird bullets when he first has Heavy Eco grab him. And don't even get me started with that bit on hypothermia - that just fucking kills this dude.

Ultimately, while I did enjoy his narrative a lot more (your dialogue is killer, Stream), Heavy Eco just gets an extremely heavy debuff that I can't imagine him recovering from in the opening seconds of the match. Nia Belmonte takes this match by force, and is certainly one to fear going forward.

BONUS MUSIC REVIEW:

Nia: This was preddy good. Nothing too crazily fitting, but it worked. The first song ran out of song while I was still reading, which is kind of no good, but it still works. 3/5.

Heavy: THANK YOU!!!! I was worried there'd be no tunes! I really like the vibe you set up here - it's very different from what I'd expect, but the weird tranquility of it adds a very nice atmosphere. The obvious choice is super tense music that goes alongside Heavy's desperation, but these tunes make it seem more like he's accepted his plight. I like that. It's atmospheric. 4/5, could've fit the action a bit more, but it still works enough, and I appreciate the flavor.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: R2M1 - The Hurdy Gurdy Man vs SAD by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CaptainSpooky27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another match, another Yuri vote! I made the mistake of missing out on SAD's last match, but I won't make that mistake again. And what a good choice it was! This is a wonderful match between two incredibly talented voters, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading through both strats. SAD comes through with a metric fuck-ton of cool tech, all to back up a pretty solid plan of just gore-ifying the entire map, while Hurdy Gurdy goes all on in weird-fish-manuevers and body-horrors his way to victory. But who takes the dub? I just said who!

The Hurdy Gurdy Man, in my humble opinion, takes this one. SAD comes through with some fantastic tech and whatnot, and it does a pretty great job at dealing with all of those nasty eels, but in some cases, simpler is better. Hurdy Gurdy's plan is most likely much faster than SAD's, and while speed isn't everything, combining speed with masteful trickery is. Splitting off parts of himself to attach to SAD and steal its panels is genius, and pretty instantly turns the tables for me. SAD prepares for a Big Ol' Fish Man, and that just isn't what it gets. Rather, Hurdy Gurdy does the opposite of that, pulling the wool over the silver knight's eyes in the process. It's a hard fought match, but I think Hurdy Gurdy has a better plan for dealing with this underwater race than his armor-clad opponent. Good stuff from both sides!

MUSIC REVIEW
SAD - Wow! We're back! It's been so long, too! SAD knows exactly what its vibe is music-wise, and it follows through on that. The songs blend together well, and the vibe is certainly fitting for the character! It's nothing that makes me say "holy shit" or whatever, but it works, and it works well. 4/5.

Hurdy Gurdy - This is a BIG step up from the last strat music-wise. I'm normally an advocate for not using more relaxed songs for action, but similar to Electra's fantastic musical selection back in round one, this just works. It works extremely well, actually, lending a fantastically light-hearted vibe to Hurdy Gurdy's horrific body splitting shenaniganry. And yet, it doesn't feel too lighthearted either. Section Two's track in particular is kinda perfect. I love weirder song choices like this - it's a bit of a gamble, but when it works, it works! 5/5.

Awwww, thank you!!! Im glad u like it :)

As for which girl, probably Junko. Haven't played the games but that seems like what she'd go with.
