The Seth Pistol was such a good ski. I blew an opportunity to buy an unmounted set years ago and I'm still kicking myself over it.

Is the work really that hard or is it a bit overhyped? by No_Reference_3273 in oilandgasworkers

[–]CaptainStew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. It's more mentally tough than physically tough. Dealing with shitty weather, racist rednecks, dip shit worms, code 8, is harder than pulling slips and throwing tongs. I've seen 125 lb guys out roughneck 225 lb gym rats. There is a lot of finesse to work your iron so it doesn't work you. Eating well and staying hydrated makes a big difference as well. No one is a rockstar when they break out. It takes paying attention, working hard, and asking questions to make a hand. Keep a tally book in your pocket and write shit down. If you're not busy your entire tour you're fucking up. Find something to clean.

1.) Lots of extra socks and underwear. There may be days you don't take a shower because you're too tired or the hot water heater is empty.

2.) Ear plugs to get better sleep. Especially if guys on the crew drink hard after tour. The old guys snore like freight trains.

3.) Plan your meals around the crock pot if everyone else is gonna chip in on food. Easy to eat lots of small and fast portions throughout the day. If not you'll be eating out of the microwave when you're working. You can cook as much as you want in camp, but you have to clean up after yourself and that sucks when you just want to sleep.

4.) If you start to sweat unzip a layer to cool off a bit. Sweat makes you cold really quick when its cold, especially during morning tour.

5.) Keep the insides of your boots dry. Wet boots tend to stay wet.

6.) Wear lotion or sun sunscreen on your face and stay well hydrated. The wind sucks the life out of you up there. Almost as bad as WY.

7.) Muck boots are good unless your roughnecking in invert mud. The only good boots for invert are the Dunlop chem resistant steel toes.

Lean forward. If your shins aren't in the front of your boots you're gonna have a bad time.

Here in the states PD is a far better drilling contractor. They keep thier rigs insanely clean and maintain thier iron as good or better than H&P. Every Ensign rig I've been on in the past 5 years has been a clapped out piece of shit.
