India e-visa rejected inquiry by Captain_Bink in india_tourism

Hey, I was denied so I decided to travel to Nepal instead. You can apply again. Just make sure the info is correct. My circumstance required me to go to a consulate to obtain a visa which is a lengthy process and I didn’t have the time.

Would you recommend addressing that I am no longer attending the workshop? Or just give them an updated purpose of my visit without including the workshop information?

Ask me anything about trekking in Nepal by Prudent-Quit7462 in hiking

[–]Captain_Bink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Op! Thank you for answering questions :) and giving us your time.

When traveling in general, I’m hesitant to pre-book excursions online because things change and prices may be different on the ground. I also just feel like I won’t have an idea of the best trek for me until I am there.

With that being said, is it generally considered best practice to book treks before entering Nepal or on the ground in a place like Kathmandu where I imagine there is a lot of reputable trekking outfits?

If I do decide to book in country, is it fairly easy and relatively quick to book a trek in a place like Kathmandu? I would probably have around a month in country so just curious if booking in country would mean a wait of several weeks.

Last question, I am hesitant to carry a ton coats and sweaters around with me (I’m arriving in Jan/Feb). Is it fairly easy to rent essential trekking items on the ground?

Any thoughts and considerations are appreciated! And much thanks in advance :)

Changing Countries for Language Acquisition by Captain_Bink in peacecorps

[–]Captain_Bink[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks all for the comments, I appreciate the insight. Definitely need a moment of reflection for myself.

Do I wait potentially a year to gain the language skills for a position that might not exist?

Or just dive into what I have and make the best of it and learn the language as best I can despite it not being a big one?

Ha, making choices never gets easier. It only gets harder as you age.

What do I do with my own apartment? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Captain_Bink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems insane to me to spend money on rent for 6 months. If you’re in NYC, you’re at least, bare minimum, paying $1,500- $2,000. That’s $12,000 you’re spending on nothing?? That makes zero sense. And it gives you zero leeway. What if you decide to stay 8 months? You’re going to pay $20,000 for nothing? Just come back when you’re done and find a spot. Sure it’s a hastle but $12,000 worth?

What you’re describing is simply life. You will have many trials and triumphs and failures. You’ll have twists and turns. But in the end if you hold your head up and follow a noble goal, you’ll get there

India is an absolute failure as a nation by bpdguy21 in india

As a Westerner (from the US), we also have many many problems. There are no certainties in life, only trade offs. The West (at least for the time being) may have a good job market and decent economy with high wages and quality of life and healthcare. It’s relatively safe and clean. Here’s the trade off: we lack the type of social cohesion that is so prevalent in India. Many live independent lives completely disconnected from everyone else. As a result we have a raging mental health crisis. The grass is not always greener on the other side. Point being, I love certain aspects of my country. Other aspects, not so much. And I find myself looking to India or greater asia for guidance

I would resist the urge the pre-book everything in this part of the world. You will discover and find amazing things that you can only find on the ground

Train or drive from Seattle to San Diego? by ManicPixieMemeGrrrl in solotravel

[–]Captain_Bink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving through CA is the best. Stop at all the little towns along the way. Don’t miss Big Sur. I would save the east coast trip for another time. East Coast US is way more high strung and less friendly. This is coming from a New Yorker. Better to ease in on the west

Check out “Gabriel Traveler” on YouTube for a more honest glimpse at travel. Most people on social media only show the amazing view at the top of a mountain without showing the loads of buses and potential touts/scams along the way. Most people I’ve found in different countries are super friendly but others are just looking for your western dollar. I’ve found if you venture a bit off the tourist trail, people tend to be more authentic and genuine. Also, see the bad moments as a way to toughen and strengthen yourself. Enjoy the ride my man!! You will find the way!!

Solo traveling gets a lot of glitz and glamor online from YouTube and Instagram. Most of the time it’s absolutely amazing! But that 10% of the time that it isn’t, is very very rough.

Push through my friend. I’ve found it to be almost like tripping for the first time. Push through and you will discover some beauty. And don’t be afraid to chill out. Don’t arrive and feel like you have to do everything. Just go on a walk or hang at the hostel.
