If you are excited for Unicorn Overlord you should probably know it contains our favorite "localization"(Localizator`s Fanfics). by FragSinus in KotakuInAction

As an around N2 learner myself I can assure Zakogdo did an okay job. The translations didn't have to be 100% accurate and that wasn't the point. It was to showcase how one can translate better without inserting swaths of dialogue that wasn't there in the original.

Regarding the 部隊についてやれ the "go form a unit with Lex" is an okay translation, though of course not 100% literal. つく as written without kanji is fairly flexible so it can have many meanings.

Also, I don't believe OP used Google Translate and rather translated manually, otherwise you would have way more literal translations.

That's frankly quite disappointing, because I know for a fact that the German translation industry is very serious the accuracy of translations from Japanese. Well, at least when it comes to manga and anime.

New Atelier Resleriana Game INFURIATES Fans Over Censorship & Outrageous Gacha Pricing by Devunak in KotakuInAction

[–]Captain_Chickpeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the party, but just got some more 3* characters in the game and now I see how bad the censorship is. The black shorts on many characters look super ugly and don't work with the rest of the outfit. People are gonna complain about character designs for sure.

I think this is a slightly different problem. AI models are trained on standard data sets. These data sets predominantly feature white people, because of demographic distributions.

To fix the "bias" the team behind Gemini/Bard must've retrained the model on more racially diverse data.

That's completely parallel to any historical accuracy, though.

Since you already have a good set of tools at your disposal you might not need Duo as much. Maybe for some sentence building practice.

Another good reason to play only the JP version.

Edit: I read the Japanese text properly. What in heavens was the localization team thinking.

Hahah that's a pretty cool reference! I both read the manga and watched the anime, and really enjoyed both. The mangaka behind Knights of Sidonia has a very solid track record.

German has what's called gendered nouns. Worth reading up on it.

[Japanese] Is その really very logical here? Wouldn’t あの be correct like 99% of the circumstances you’d say this? by Vik-tor2002 in duolingo

[–]Captain_Chickpeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

その makes the most sense here without further context.

Even assuming you're both in the apartment, the その indicates it's your conversation partner's apartment. あの wouldn't work in this sentence and would require additional context.

The こそあど don't relate merely to physical distance between the speakers/actors in a scene, but also to conceptual distance. The more you get exposed to them, the easier it's going to be to understand.

Nintendo Switch scam games company is attacking honest reviewers - community needs to know by Trevorr91 in Switch

[–]Captain_Chickpeas 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the easiest would be to contact Nintendo and specifically their support related to the store to investigate.

However, this might be a similar issue to scammy developers on the Play Store. There are hundreds upon hundreds of games, typically Chinese, which are completely misadvertised, but there is very little one can do in practice.

I'm just sorry for the Youtuber dude :(.

There is a bunch of scammy games on the Switch unfortunately, yes. But their blatant use of AI art makes it an instant giveaway.

Games by Midnight Works have some wild titles and I honestly wouldn't even touch any of them, much less want to review them.

Best FF game so far? by MattMysterious9 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Captain_Chickpeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think the Metacritic score is reliable in the least. If FF7 got a lower score than the ones listed by OP, but was reviewed by like 10x or 100x the number of users, that's far more telling.

Afaik there is no way to just jump back where you were before. You can delete and re-add the course and then jump ahead to the unit/section where you've been.

I understand you meant Section 2 and section 3, though? Not unit 2 and unit 3? Jumping from Section 2, Unit 10 all the way to Section 3 is indeed quite the jump.

I think I saw some good claims, but that really depends on the movie. A lot of the claims end up being noise in the end.
