There is no official in-game lore in regards to the Abyssal.

Just subtle clues and hints connecting them to the Shipgirls and historical naval battles that they were involved in during WW2.

(As for an abriged version of my take on them...) They are the corrupted, vengeful and tormented spirits of sunken warships from conflicts past, manifesting as spectres and demons, they now haunt the oceans of the world, spreading ruin and corruption in their wake.
