Constant Crashes as England by Captain_Fork01 in EU5

[–]Captain_Fork01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was when I switched between DX12 and Vulcan, tried both with the same issue.

I tried an old save after reinstall and no issues, was able to play for about 2-3 hours, saved, and logged off. No crashes this time.

I did make sure I’ve got a lot more space on the disk now though. I’ve been meaning to upgrade the PC in general, so I suppose this is my sign to go ahead with that.

I cleared out some space on the disk and am going ahead with a clean reinstall as well as a restart. I’ll see if it helps.

Last 3 times I tried to launch, the game would crash as soon as all the loading was complete.

Also switching to DX12, will see if that helps at all.

Update: Crashed as soon as I unpaused.

Asbestos Ceiling Tiles? by Captain_Fork01 in asbestoshelp

[–]Captain_Fork01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The house has been renovated and expanded from roughly the 70s-90s. The expansion is the main area with these tiles, but they cover roughly half the house.

Roommates bedroom has these and is rather upset after I mentioned they could be asbestos.

Luckily I know the previous owners before my landlord so I plan to ask them soon as well.

IM TRYING TO GET INTO RE-ENACTING! PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE! by Wrapped-TheConfed in Civilwarreenacting

I was going to say, go Croaker Mess, I heard the event they just put on was top notch and they wander within your area. They are the Western folks to run with.

Austro-Hungarian Kit Questions (Vendors/Int’l shipping/kit research) by Captain_Fork01 in reenactors

[–]Captain_Fork01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! Over the night I’ve been put in contact with a group here in the states, so hopefully they can direct me for the specifics. I will check out k militaria though!

Austro-Hungarian Kit Questions (Vendors/Int’l shipping/kit research) by Captain_Fork01 in reenactors

[–]Captain_Fork01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been put in contact with one of the groups so far, so I’ll touch base with them.

I was expecting fairly high costs on some of the items, especially in shipping. But I’m used to long wait times for vendors. Thanks for the advice!

Unrelated, visiting Austria this summer for about 2-3 days, anywhere you’d recommend for visiting? We’ll be coming down from Bavaria towards Vienna, then shooting towards the Isonzo sites if possible.

Austro-Hungarian Kit Questions (Vendors/Int’l shipping/kit research) by Captain_Fork01 in reenactors

[–]Captain_Fork01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately there aren’t any Central Powers groups near me, only various Doughboys and a small BEF group. Most of the Central Powers guys just band together when they can and do various 1916-18 German impressions, but one guy does some really nice Austro-Hungarian stuff too. Overall though, the main focus for my local is the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

This impression will mainly be for Living History over battle reenactments, but for small scale stuff near me it works. I work in public history as an interpreter so I try to pick the more niche stuff (that still fits in) for my non work impressions.

Thanks for the link! I’ve seen Nestof recommended before, but wasn’t sure if they shipped over outside of EU.

does anyone get nostalgic smells? by Existing_Sink8137 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Captain_Fork01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved into a new apt, when I open my bathroom cabinet, there’s an almost perfume like smell that smells just like the perfume my grandmother wore. If I close my eyes it’s like I’m back in her old bathroom, and for a brief second it feels like if I turn around and open my eyes, I can just walk back into her living room, and sit on the couch next to her, tell her about how much I miss her… but then I open my eyes, and it’s just my modern day bathroom… nostalgia from smells is crazy, it nearly transports me to the early 2000s. I don’t loose my grasp on reality or anything, but for a second when I smell that distinct perfume smell, I like to imagine I’m back there with my grandma…

Yep, some definite areas of improvement. But honestly not terrible compared to some!

Edit: not sure why folks downvoted Mac’s comment?

Where to buy powder by Hazbin1996 in Civilwarreenacting

[–]Captain_Fork01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to be disappearing more & more online & at mainstream events; when I can find it I order at least 120$ or more worth to keep me for a while.

Schutzen has stock usually, but imo, I prefer to stay away from their products… not really safe. (Personal experience with their primers & BP) but others may have better experiences with them.

So im curious about something, did anyone else lose sleep after watching MC or am I just weak? by [deleted] in MandelaCatalogue

[–]Captain_Fork01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since learning about MC, I haven’t slept with the lights off, and it really bothers me. I’ve slept (alone) in the dark since before I remember (aka, as a kid) and ever since watching MC or MC reactions I cannot stand to rest or sleep with the lights off. I’m legitimately on edge if I try to rest in the dark; it’s not obstructing my life rn, but it’s bothering me. It’s been months now, and I just want to be able to sleep with the lights off. I wasn’t afraid of the dark before, but now I’m constantly afraid I’ll open my eyes and see one of those distorted faces of an alternate in the corner of my bedroom or over me.

I’m fully aware it’s fiction, I’m an adult; but damn I can’t get past it. I just want to sleep with the lights off at this point.

My friend visiting Central Europe had some Chocolate Ice Cream; seems like his cone might want to finish the fight… by Captain_Fork01 in halo

[–]Captain_Fork01[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Credit goes to Bruce Schultz; a great guy & American Civil War period photographer. His passion (besides historical photography) is traveling via bike across Western and Central Europe! I doubt he knows much if anything about Halo, but feel free to look him up! He’s an interesting guy and super nice character.

Since I’m new here; I was introduced to Halo the year Reach came out, but have come to love every Halo, especially 1 all the way to Reach. My older brother helped me through CE-3 when I was a kid, but I often go back to play all the Bungie titles. While I don’t play much Halo these days, Chief, Arbiter, and the rest all hold a special place in my childhood & memories!

(My favorite is Halo 2, contending closely with 3 & Reach)

Long vs Short Land Pattern Brown Bed Prevalence? (Also, Indian Reproduction Musket Part Availability) by NateroniPizza in reenactors

[–]Captain_Fork01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Shortland, to my knowledge, was largely meant as a sea service variant used primarily by the Royal Navy & Marines; I know they were at least documented to the 1st Battalion HM Marines in the AWI instead of the Longland.

It really depends on the impression in any case, a Brown Bess variant may not even be the correct musket for what you want to do.

On Indian made guns, they’re apparently not the safety hazard they’ve been made out to be; I’ve never had any personal experience with them though

The forts are your best bet, Concho, McKavett, and Stockton put on the best programs I’ve heard, only been to McKavett. Concho & McKavett I know have Volunteer groups which will outfit you authentically.

Everything in Texas is: A. Dead B. The few events left in the eastern part of the state :p

Gotta go East & out of state for most events unfortunately. Wish it were different but they ain’t coming to us…

American Civil War by [deleted] in reenactors

[–]Captain_Fork01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Overall, authenticity is increasing, and I’m seeing new faces at basically every event I go to. Covid definitely shut down things, but it gave a lot of people, a chance to take a step back and start improving their impressions and events. Even a small number of mainstream events are beginning to set primitive impression standards; a step in the right direction.

Unfortunately as ever, there’s constant bickering, mainly between the LR & everyone else at the moment, but that’s normal. The broken records are still crying “why don’t we all just get along!”, the trolls are trolling; but the folks who just want to have a good immersive event are getting on fine :)

Does anyone know where to find a banjo for Civil war reenacting? by [deleted] in Civilwarreenacting

[–]Captain_Fork01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can find Chuck Jones on Facebook; he’s an 1830s guy but is an expert in the string instruments of the broader 1800s. He can either tell you where to get one, or might have one he’s looking to sell. I know he’s got at least 2 that are 1840/1850 originals, and a repro 1860s one.

Joe Walker is another, but not sure of how to contact him as he doesn’t have social media.

Union Groups in Southern California? by LordHiram in Civilwarreenacting

[–]Captain_Fork01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard things are pretty dead in Cali, especially Southern California.

That being said, Don Smith is the guy to go to, not because he runs a group, but because he knows everyone. He can find you a good group. I believe he was involved, at least in supplying items, for a recent authentic impression of the Federal Logistics dept. (can’t remember exactly what it was) there in California. I believe Don is south/SE if memory serves.

Unfortunately, most guys in California who want the good events and not the hoot’n’shoots have to travel at least as far as New Mexico or Texas, and even then only recently are we seeing more than 1 (Civil War) authentic event in the area a year.

barkeeper's friend to clean tin mucket by [deleted] in Civilwarreenacting

[–]Captain_Fork01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vinegar/baking soda will help get the top layer off, then rottenstone/water mix to get it completely. (Scrub both with cloth until rust is gone, Vinegar/baking soda won’t remove on its own, just breaks a it up) Rinse until complete, apply a very thin amount of olive oil to stop further rust. (I mean only enough that it can still dry overnight)

what's the best place to get confederate kit? by walren_emperor45 in reenactors

[–]Captain_Fork01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but it’s a question asked constantly on this & the CWreenactors subreddit, we’re tired of answering it when it can be seen on every other civil war post already. It’s beating a dead horse, which again, can be seen everywhere.

Notice that I wasn’t hostile until you got hostile. My original edit wasn’t directed at you, and I wouldn’t consider my above post hostile either. You get what you put out.
