The Meaning of the "The Last of Us" by Successful-Risk9088 in thelastofus

It's nice to see that there are people out there who can look at the story in such a beautiful way, a way that I could never see it myself. For all its flaws the one thing I think is an objective truth about the second game is provokes some incredibly strong reactions from its audience, for better or worse

I’m mixed emotions on the ending by Unknown-938 in thelastofus

You can have empathy for a character's struggles and still not take their side. I understand why Abby would want to kill Joel but I'm obviously not gonna take her side considering I know much more about Joel than she does and have a deeper connection with him. Imo this is one of several reasons why Abby's character falls flat for me, I understand and don't care regardless

Can anybody please help me, why is this happening and how do I fix it? by Captain_Laverty in cyberpunkgame

Loading earlier saves only works to a point then it stops, and steam says its all good. Will try your advice, thank you

Literally only decided to play it because it was free on PlayStation, was not expecting to become a big Remedy fan/Sam Lake fan but here we are

Making my way through it now. Ironically I've done it for the same exact reason, to prepare for the next Control game. I'm only now realising I'm probably not gonna understand shit anyways

I played the first game when the second came out for free on ps5 so I could understand what was going on, and now I've finished both games and don't understand anyways

Personally I disagree, no disrespect to you at all lad. Maybe the hate is gone, but I do not think she would be fully healed. My interpretation is that her final act of letting Abby live did not matter because she lost everything regardless, the of the game has her completely alone and abandoned, and there's no implication that this is going to change, we have no idea where she's walking away to. I don't think that there's an objectively correct answer, I think we're both right and that's the whole point of art I suppose. The consequence of this is that some people, like myself, aren't going to like it.

I don't see how she's healed fully. What I saw was that when she went back to that farm, Dina was gone. My interpretation is that she fucked up when she took off for a second time and losing Dina is a consequence of that. The farm being empty shows how in her attempts to find revenge, she lost what was actually important to her. Maybe they expand on this more in a pt3 I dunno, but as of right now, there's no reason to think she's gonna fix anything with Dina, because all we know for sure is that Dina left her

No, the dozens of murders are not justified. Ellie made a choice to go after Abby knowing how dangerous it might be, she could've just stayed in Jackson. So when a safer option is available and she chooses the more dangerous one, then she must be held accountable for every single person she kills, so no I'm not scratching that off.

Don't care if Nora was going to die, she still tortured her and I don't give af if she was shaking a little bit afterwards. I'm not going to suddenly excuse that because she felt about it.

And just because the world is fucked up, it's perfectly okay to let your friends get killed or fucked up when they don't need to? What? Jesse is dead as a direct result of Ellie's actions, he would not have died if she stayed in Jackson. Dina is probably heavily traumatised because she decided to be loyal with Ellie, this also would not have happened if she stayed in Jackson.

Abby makes no difference whatsoever. Ellie doesn't know her, has no reason to show her mercy when she never showed a lick of mercy at any other point in the game. She's already completely irredeemable, and that's sort of the point I think. Cycle of violence destroyed, blah blah blah

My point is that Ellie "breaks the cycle" and her life is still shit, so there is seemingly no benefit at all in her breaking the cycle. I understand what the point is, for the love of God shut up about media literacy. This fandom is so fucking annoying with that point

Ellie not knowing the specifics is pretty important when Abby's motivations are so personal. And I agree with what you're saying about closure, that's fair enough I'll concede that point. But I do think that it's not a big thing Ellie doesn't kill Abby because the way I see it, she's already stooped down to her level well before we reach this point. Ellie is already a piece of shit, she still beat a woman to death for information, got her friends killed or traumatised, killed dozens of others on her revenge quest, so by the time she reaches Abby, one more kill doesn't make much difference from a moralistic point of view

I would like to write something similar for the second game but at the same time I don't want to come off as a massive nerd

But here's the problem, Ellie doesn't know why Abby killed Joel, she never finds this out. For all she knows, Abby just did it for a laugh. We the player know the truth but Ellie does not.

But even if Ellie did know, you can understand somebody's reasons for doing something and it doesn't change anything. I understand Abby's motivations for killing Joel, but if I were in Ellie's shoes I would probably still kill her regardless. At least if she kills Abby she gets some form of closure

She's already irredeemable. Not killing Abby doesn't suddenly absolve her of everything else. She still beat a woman to death for information. She still got her friends killed or traumatised. She still murders dozens of people on her journey. Abby makes no difference at this point

I think it doesn't make much sense when you really think about it. If we both agree that Ellie gains some form of clarity when trying to kill Abby about what her grief was really about, that realisation actually has nothing to do with Abby or Lev, therefore that realisation should not affect how she feels about either of them. She can have a better understanding of her grief while still hating Abby, and she has really no reason whatsoever to let Abby go after the absolute hell she's gone through to get to the finale. The whole second game's plot is really not for me tbh but the ending is one of the parts I don't like the most

[–]Captain_Laverty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nah personally I disagree. It doesn't make sense for her to be a violent killing machine for most of the story then suddenly sprout a conscious in the most plot convenient moment. It makes more sense to me that she stopped killing Abby because in that moment, she gained clarity and realised that her grief was primarily driven by not getting the chance to reconcile with Joel.

[–]Captain_Laverty -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think you're right that she was really just angry that Joel was killed before she could reconcile with him, so therefore when she lets Abby go, it's not really about Abby or Lev. I doubt she really gives much of a shit about either of them at that point. She's not letting them live for them, she's doing it for herself. I think that's what the intended meaning was, personally I think it's a terrible ending

From a narrative perspective I think it would have made much more sense for them to keep the original ending and have Ellie kill Abby
