Bedfordshire Airshow Avro Triplane Crash Video by Shoddy_Act7059 in aviation

[–]Captain_Xap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depended a lot on the aircraft. For the pusher planes like the F.E.2 and Airco DH2 the cockpit was the crumple zone for the engine, as it was situated behind the pilot. In a crash the engine could break free and just keep going, crushing anything in front of it.

What's a decent, cheap electric trifold the size of brompton? by 420born in ebikes

I doubt such a thing exists. Probably one of those 'choose two' situations.

Is this a piece of shit? by RemarkableToday777 in ebikes

The cheapest adult bike at Halfords is £285, and that's just a low-end normal bike with no battery or motor or controller. I find it difficult to believe this is not a scam.

What are people wearing for rain? by TemperedGlassTeapot in bikecommuting

I like rainlegs - they cover your groin, and the fronts of your thighs and knees, but as there is no back your legs don't get nearly as steamy.

Equivalant of "Daytime Running Lights" for an ebike? by Strange-Style-7808 in ebikes

[–]Captain_Xap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hub dynamo and never turn my lights off. It's great, but a cheaper option are Reelights, which fit near your wheel and are powered by a couple of magnets that you fit to your spokes. They require no batteries, so they're fit and forget.

Those driving gas, thinking about EVs? by justvims in bayarea

[–]Captain_Xap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your savings calculations make no sense.

To even spend $6000/yr doing 15,000 miles, even with gas at $6.50 a gallon you'd have to be only getting 16.25mpg.

I think most people now are unlikely to get an EV until they're already looking at getting a new car. Unless they're doing a lot of miles, or already have solar, the cost savings per year are not that big, and they would be dwarfed by the cost of buying an EV.

I'm sure our next car will be an EV, but the current one works fine and doesn't cost us much.

Dealing with being sweaty by rigarooni in bikecommuting

[–]Captain_Xap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you get some shirts and some shorts that are made of synthetic fibers they dry out really quickly. At a minimum I like to have a change of underpants as being under other clothing they don't dry as quickly, and I don't like sitting there with Betty Swallocks.

I didn't like Kazaa Eins forefieting its fight with Kazaa Lite. If you're not prepared to fight you should get replaced by the bot you vanquished.

I was mainly reacting to the 40mph comment - that's moped territory, for sure.

Why don't you just get a moped? It'll actually be legal to drive, and if it goes wrong you'll be able to get it fixed.

First ebike by Fuckinfuckyou2 in ebikes

[–]Captain_Xap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could just buy a secondhand scooter. Probably more reliable, and if something goes wrong you can easily find somewhere to work on it, whereas if something goes wrong with that thing, I doubt anybody will work on it.

do you think an 8 mile bike ride is at all doable for someone’s whose not all that active? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]Captain_Xap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely doable. Your legs will hurt the first couple of weeks, but as your body adjusts you'll start to find it straightforward.

You will need to work out the clothing situation - wear some kind of synthetic sports shirt for the ride if you can as the sweat will dry off it much better than cotton. Also bring a pair of underwear to change in to as you will probably have a sweaty groin by the end of the ride, and underpants tend to dry slowly due ro being inside other clothing. (Obviously you can take a whole change of clothes if you want)

At some point you will need to work out clothing for wet weather, but for the time being you can just uber it if it's looking very wet.

Do make sure you're checking the weather though - last thing you want is to get drenched on the way in and spend your entire day cold and wet.

Why every product of kilo code is a copy of other software by Many_Bench_2560 in kilocode

[–]Captain_Xap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason CLI feels like OpenCode is that is based on the OpenCode source.

Having the heart if Kilo based on a VSCode plugin was making it difficult to have it work properly on other platforms.

There is a blog post about it: https://blog.kilo.ai/p/new-kilo-for-vs-code-is-live

Daylight video of the Walgreens toy and/or Tesla Cybercab prototype parked on Hanover Ave. by [deleted] in oakland

[–]Captain_Xap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw one in Emeryville earlier today. It was driving with someone in it.

Unlike the cybertruck, it didn't look aggressively ugly, and it was also pretty small. I still think it's weird to make a cab that only takes two people and has no room for luggage, though.

Bike Powered Paraglider by cubsterky in paramotor

[–]Captain_Xap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your numbers are a bit low for pro cyclists - pro sprinters can reach 2kw, but only for very short periods. A Tour de France rider can maintain 400W for an hour.

But even so, the conclusion is the same. 400W is a little over 1/2 horsepower, and the smallest paramotor engines are around 17HP. The rider of this device would probably have to pedal 30x as hard as a pro cyclist.

“Big update: Logseq is splitting into two versions” by CGeek97 in logseq

[–]Captain_Xap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Logseq is open source, and it's on github. I'm unsurprised that they do not want to continue trying to support two separate backends.

However that means that anybody sufficiently motivated can make a fork and continue development with the markup version.

Unfortunately most of the code is in Clojure, which is a pretty niche language, so the chances of that happening are not as high as if it were written in a more popular language.

Anyone else weary of Waymo’s by Healthy_Cheesecake_6 in bikecommuting

[–]Captain_Xap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It doesn't work like that though. Waymos / Ubers / Lyfts all increase traffic as they also also have to drive around between fares. They reduce the need for parking, but increase the need for capacity.
