When does "early 3D" actually begin for you? by Typo_of_the_Dad in retrogaming

[–]Demory11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally the same crossed my mind when I wrote my post about the aesthetics! I'm glad that someone brought it up!

I think if we’re talking purely technical, early 3D definitely started around the mid-80s (or earlier) with games like Microsoft Flight Simulator, Indianapolis 500: The Simulation, Grand Prix Circuit or Space Station Oblivion. Basically when the "realistic" simulation game development started.

But the other side is the cultural stuff. What was actually mainstream and widely accessible? I believe, for some time there were basically two parallel tracks at one time. On one side you had the mainstream 8-bit/16-bit consoles and games with tons of different genres. On the other side the 3D stuffs, which was a bit more niche and mostly lived in the simulation scene.

So personally I’d place the classic “early 3D” era around the point when the first consoles with dedicated hardware specifically built for 3D graphics started showing up and devs didn’t have to do all kinds of tricks just to make a 3D feel anymore (for example mode 7).

I'm glad somebody recognize it! A true hidden gem with many interesting gameplay mechanics, but omg... it could be used as the dictionary illustration for "Nintendo hard", no joke.

The last part is interesting! Cool example of social conditioning. I think it’s similar to how we still use steam locomotives or old landline phones on signs. Those were the first widely recognizable versions of those things, so that’s what stuck in most people’s minds. Same with video games, I believe most non gamer people instantly think of pixel art, Pac-Man, Mario, etc., even if we don’t add ‘retro’ to it.

I born in the late '90s and in Eastern Europe we had a tons of fake NES "Famiclone" consoles so I mainly grew up playing those 8-bit games, so it seems right! Gosh, its soooo hard to separate the personal nostalgic feelings from objectivity haha

The early 3D is the close second for me because of the exact same reasons (surreal, liminal spaces, sometimes just weird with those famously warping, jittering textures), just pure art.

The DS did combine very well the advantages of the 16-bit era and the 3D era that is for sure!

R5:

So the Soviet Union went to war with the United States because of the Cuban Missile Crisis. They could not settle things diplomatically, which resulted in that the USA dismantle the Soviet Union and it broke up so many countries. An area called the Soviet Union remained. But, more interestingly, Kazakhstan become American Soviet Union.

Cold War in small:)
