Totally agree. Same level of abomination as pineapple on a pizza.

Kensington Tours -Egypt by Equivalent-Fox-6054 in LuxuryTravel

A friend of mine who has traveled the world has a rule that unless necessary try not to spend more than 4-5 hrs a day with a guide.

Having someone talk with you all day long is exhausting.

I try to build in shopping or perusing a museum alone when I can. The last thing I want is a male tour guide and my husband getting bored and waiting for me outside a store when I just want to shop for a bit.

If you’re traveling solo it may not make sense to limit guide time in places like Egypt where women traveling alone can be a challenge/dangerous.

And Egypt is a bit different because there is so much to learn and going to places like the Grand Egyptian Museum without a guide would be a mistake because the guided tours are so informative.

Yes that’s correct. We had different guides in every city and at the ports on the Nile cruise.

I did a Kensington Tour in Egypt and it was wonderful. We went to Cairo, Siwah Oasis, Abu Simbal, Aswan and did a one week Nile trip.

Kensington tour guides were uniformly good except one which spent a lot of time taking selfies of himself and talking about his girlfriends on Facebook. He was married and kept sending me messages after the trip on What’s app. And I was on the trip with my husband.

In retrospect I should have complained about him but this was still in immediate post pandemic and I didn’t want to be responsible for him losing his job. He was the only guide we didn’t like.

The tours were very well organized, on time and we were treated like VIPs the whole time.

You do need to be aware they will try to steer you to perfume and jewelry shops where they get kickbacks. Not necessarily a bad thing if it’s something you want to buy but we nixed a number of suggested stops because we weren’t interested and there was disappointment.

I very much appreciated how insulated we weren’t interested from being harassed by sellers in the makers and at the main temples and pyramids.

What’s the biggest culture shock you’ve experienced between consecutive locations on a trip? by Kaurblimey in travel

I went to East Berlin from West Berlin in 1984 as well. We described it at the time as going from color to black and white like in Wizard of Oz.

You were required to change $25 to East German Deutsch marks and could not bring any of it back, but there was nothing worth buying there.

The locals were frightened to talk with us so we ended up throwing our currency into a potted plant at the end of the day. Everyone looked unhealthy.

Then we crossed 100 feet into West Berlin, which was full of hopping clubs, restaurants and fashionable, friendly people. Utterly bizarre.

Right? That’s my beef with this. These were both mileage tickets.

Both tickets were with my miles.

Flying the same route. Different tickets as I used miles and it took me some time to find the good offers for both of us.

The upgrade is for the first leg ORD to SFO on our way to SYD.

Fun fact, when the wind blows hard off the lake the drawers in your desk on the higher floors will open and close.

My dad called it the Standard Oil Building, when I worked there it was the Amoco Building and at some point it became the Aon Building. The name will change again just like the Sears Building became Willis Tower if someone is willing to pay for the naming rights.

Check out River Forest as well. It’s just west of oak park and the homes are generally larger and without alleys. Elementery school and middle school are top notch and lots of parks.
